Wedding gift question

I'm going to my best friend's brother's wedding reception in Boston in a few weeks and I'm torn over what to give them.

He got married on Saturday in Hawaii, but this is their Chinese reception. It's being held at a restaurant on a Monday night. I'm flying up to Boston for the weekend to go with my best friend (who was also my MOH).

I know her brother ok -- I've sorta known him for 13 years now, about the same amount of time I've known her, but really just in passing. I certainly would not have been invited to the reception otherwise. I was not invited to their wedding in Hawaii or anything. I didn't invite him to our wedding last year.

What in the world do I give them? At first I was thinking a $100 check, but that's actually kinda hard right now with our closing this week and the cost of the trip being almost twice that. Now I'm thinking I'd like to give them a $50 gift card to Bed Bath & Beyond.

Thinking back to wedding gifts I received, I really did appreciate those gift cards because I felt like I could treat myself to whatever I wanted.

They're only registered on amazon.com and at crate & barrel. I think I'd feel really weird bringing an actual present to their reception, but a card with a gift card seems like it'll be ok.

Is this ok? My best friend didn't give us a card or a gift for our actual wedding -- she gave me a really beautiful coach purse at my shower -- but I didn't sweat it since I knew the wedding cost her a bit (driving to NY, the dress cost). She just got engaged and is also having a baby soon so I'm sure they'll be a zillion gifts to give her soon... I just want to feel not so bad about being a little 'cheap' as far as her brother's gift goes...

Re: Wedding gift question

Why not order the gift of the registry and have it sent to their house?

Re: Wedding gift question

I'd give them the cash. Or send a gift, but I'd be worried it wouldn't get there til after the wedding and they'd think I was a cheap-o for a day or two.

Re: Wedding gift question

Sandy, I think a GC should be just fine given the (many!) circumstances.

Re: Wedding gift question

Actually, outside of NY it's pretty standard to give actual gifts - not cash - at weddings. Most of them even have gift tables set up at the hall. So if you want to bring a gift, it shouldn't be a problem. Chances are, you won't be the only one.
