what are good neighborhoods to buy a house?

DH and I are looking at the cost of our rent, and the expected cost of a mortgage, and wanted to see what our options are.

Does anyone have any recommendations on neighborhoods? he grew up in plainview, but we cant afford there, so we have been looking at

Deer Park
Dix Hills
Huntington Station
East Meadow
Massapequa

Any other recommendations?

Re: what are good neighborhoods to buy a house?

I grew up in the South Shore area so i'm only familiar with those areas (wantagh, seaford, massapequa). Massapequa is nice just make sure as the PP mentioned you're not in amityville SD

Re: what are good neighborhoods to buy a house?

I've lived in East Meadow my entire life. My family has lived here for about 50 years now. My mom and all my aunts and uncles grew up here. The school district is very good. There neighborhoods are very nice (pretty much made up of the middle working class). There's alot around here: The Medical Center, Roosevelt Field is 10 mins away, alot of stores are located off of hempstead turnpike.
The location is great in terms of parkways. I have easy access to the meadowbrook, wantagh, and southern state.

Re: what are good neighborhoods to buy a house?

I would stay away from Huntington Station. My sister lives in Huntington and that is nice, but Huntington Station is not a nice area and the schools are not the best.

Re: what are good neighborhoods to buy a house?

Dix Hills is a beautiful area with a great school district.
Massapequa is very prett and quiet. I think that this is a better value for money than Dix Hills.
From what I've heard, I'd stay away from Deer Park.

my close friends lived in deer park in a really nice apt complex and their car (not a fancy car) got broken into 5 time in the 1 year that they lived there. . . broken windows a few times and slashed tires. I am sure that is not all of deer park.

that is defininately not all of deer park. those things happen everywhere. isolated incidents.

I currently live in deer park. IT IS AWESOME. DPA has everything you could ask for on it. And it is right in the middle of li 1 hr from city, 1 hr from riverhead. as far as the schools go. Deer park is good half hollow hills (dix hills) is better ... on paper. I love dp because it is normal! nice middle class area with a decent amount of property. there is a preschool, primary school (k-2), intermediate school 3-5, and so on.... i like having the schools broken down like that keeps them smaller.

dix hills is more expensive. I grew up there. The schools are very snobby. when you turn 18 you get a bmw. Not my thing. dix hills has no prek from what i remember, elementary is k-5, middle school and 2 high schools. I went there and I was happy for the most part. But you have to be realisitc now a days, higher income areas bring more expensive drugs. unfortunately, u have to deal with drugs in any school district, but at least u can decide if its w e e d or heroin!!! lol

currently huntington station is having some trouble with one of their schools and bullet casings on the lawn. some parents are trying to get the school closed down. it is an elementary school. i forget the name. I would look into that before purchasing a home there. I would suspect that is more serious than a car being broken into. there are nice homes in huntington. i would just make sure my child wasn't going to the school in question.

Re: what are good neighborhoods to buy a house?

Sorry but depending on where you are in Huntington STATION, you're fine. I grew up in Huntington Station technically but I was in the tree section, right by Whitman. That area has always been nice and still is...

Really the only part of Huntington that is bad is the area in and around the train station stretching all the way from Oakwood Road, over to Park Ave...but Jack Abrams (the school mentioned by PPs) is actually part of the HUNTINGTON school district, while alot of Huntington Station goes to the South Huntington School District.

I'd say if you're looking at Huntington, just be careful where. Let me know if you need more info.

I moved to Bellmore when we bought a house. We both work in the city and needed a shorter commute.

HTH with either!

Re: what are good neighborhoods to buy a house?

I live in Massapequa currently, and grew up here (North Massapequa). It's a great neighborhood...with great school districts.. Massapequa and Plainedge are the better school districts though.

Any surrounding area on the South Shore is nice too...Seaford, Bellmore, Wantagh
