Coindre Hall, Andrews, Kevin Lysaght Photography, JPI Video, Muzic Makers, Royalty Limo, Alert Bus and more – November 11, 2006 Wedding Review UPDATED WITH VIDEO!!

First I just want to thank all the girls on liweddings.com and theknot.com for helping me with the planning process. You’ve all been so helpful and so many components of our wedding would not have been possible without your advice, suggestions, and creativeness. Second, I want to thank all the girls on the boards who post their wedding reviews. I found them to be extremely helpful and, now that I’ve written mine and know how long it takes to pull all this information together, I appreciate your taking the time to put together your review and share it with all of us. Now, without further ado, my wedding review:

Our wedding was perfect. Yes, I know everyone says that about their wedding…but realistically, everyone should be able to say that about their special day, right? I mean, after all those days, months, years of planning and anticipation, every bride and groom should be able to walk away from their wedding and know it was wonderful. We had absolutely amazing weather for a November wedding – 60 and sunny. And we made sure to not only enjoy the weather, but to enjoy our party. The beauty of the day and the hard work put in by almost all of our vendors thankfully outshined the mistakes made by our event planner/caterer and the not-quite-right hair style done by my hairdresser.

In hindsight, I think the only pieces of advice I have for brides to be – make sure you LOVE your dress, hair stylist and make-up artist and be sure to cushion your timeline. I hope the below review helps other brides with their planning and vendor selection. Please feel free to FM me with any questions.

Note: please excuse the quality of the photos below – they are scans of our proofs that I then edited, not the original digital photos (those are high res and awesome quality)

Coindre Hall (A+)
http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/webtemp1.cfm?dept=10&id=848

Coindre Hall is an old mansion on the Gold Coast in Huntington. It’s owned by Suffolk County Department of Parks & Recreation and overlooks Huntington Harbor. When we started planning our wedding we were living halfway across the country and were scouting out locations via the web. We knew we didn’t want a typical reception hall and we wanted something with character and warmth – a place that would span the dichotomy of cozy home and grand elegance. I don’t know how many hours I logged on our computer before I found Coindre Hall, but when I did I knew it was the place I wanted to get married. On one of our visits home we went to see the place and both of us fell in love with it (ok, I fell in love with it. DH liked it the most of all the places we saw).

The venue worked out really well for us. When you pay the site fee it entitles you to use the mansion for the entire day. So, we were able to get ready, take our pictures, and have the ceremony and reception in one location. In addition, having the dining room adjacent to the dancing room got almost everyone out on the dance floor. And for those who didn’t want to be around the dancing they could stay in the dining room, relax in the sitting room, or hang out by the bar in the foyer.

Andrews Fabulous Food and Event Management (D)
Apparently my original posting was edited by the LI Weddings powers that be to remove my write-up on this vendor. If you want the details on why I gave them a D please FM me. Since I cannot, in good faith, recommend this vendor, I would instead recommend: Lessing’s (http://www.lessings.com) [based on their reputation at other locations], Philip Stone Caterers (http://www.stonecaterers.com) [based on another bride’s recommendation].

Shoreline Beverages (A+)
631-427-8488 - Lisa, Mike or Stew
Lisa was extremely helpful in helping us pick out beer. We wanted a mix of lagers, ales and seasonal beer. We wound up selecting various types of Brooklyn Brewery beers, Bud/Bud Light, and Punked (a pumpkin beer). Unfortunately, the bartender didn’t put out all our selections. I went up to the bar at one point, saw the selections, and asked if that was all there was. He said yes so I got concerned that Shoreline had screwed us. But the next day when we collected all the leftover alcohol from my sister and her husband, we found unopened cases of the other beers. So, Shoreline DID deliver, but Andrew’s did not provide the beer to our guests. The best part about Shoreline is that they will take back any unopened cases (unfortunately, we didn’t get to take advantage of this because the Andrew’s guy yelled at my sister and her husband that they didn’t take it back).

Liquor Plaza (A+)
631-271-0004 – Jane
Jane was great. She not only helped with assessing how much of each alcohol we would need, but in determining which brands we should get. In addition, she was able to recommend wines and champagne based on my description of what we like. What was really awesome was that the credit for the returned alcohol was put on my credit card 2 days after the wedding. Ka-ching!

Kevin Lysaght Photography (A+)
http://www.klphotography.net
[email protected] or 516-428-9684 – Kevin Lysaght

I cannot say enough good things about Kevin. He is awesome. His work is amazing. He’s great to work with. And he’s just all around a nice guy. As I told FH, he’s someone I feel Kevin’s someone we should call when we are out on the Island to go out for a drink and shoot the ****. I started our search for a photographer online, by looking at at least 50 websites. I narrowed this list down to about 10 and then had DH review them and narrow down further. We met with 4 or 5 photographers and I knew as soon as I met Kevin that he was who I wanted to work with. DH knew as soon as he saw his work.

Throughout the process, Kevin was very responsive, always getting back to us in a timely fashion. During our engagement portrait session he was fun and made us feel comfortable with having a camera focused on us. The day of the wedding he was calm and managed to get through the list of “must have” photos we provided PLUS the list of “if we have time” photos. And his assistant was just as calm and friendly as he was. He had our proofs to us within a month of the wedding and a CD of the digital images to us within a week or so of us ordering it.

It was such a pleasure working with Kevin that we’d encourage every bride to check out his work (if you want to see examples of his work from other weddings) on his website: http://www.klphotography.net

JPI Video (A+)
http://www.jpivideo.com
[email protected] or 631-929-3466 – Joseph Palma

WE GOT OUR VIDEO!!! It's AWESOME. Joe not only lived up to his reputation but superseded it! He posted our wedding recap (the short clip that you show to your friends/family who don't want to sit through the entire video - lol) on his website.

To view our wedding recap video:
go to www.jpifilms.com
on bottom of page click on download flash link
once that's done installing, click on the 'flash site' link
once there, click on 'portfolio' link
our video is the first one, click on it
you might need to give it some time to buffer and then it should play
automatically

Joe and his work are amazing. He is truly an artist. DH and I cannot wait to get our video!!! We went through the same process for selecting a videographer as we did for selecting a photographer. The key difference here was that DH didn’t really understand why we needed a video. He thought wedding videos were cheesy and a waste of money. So, he narrowed down his selections based on which videos were, in his opinion, least cheesy. Meantime, I was coming from the opposite end of the spectrum. I felt having a video was key as there was so much we would miss the day of the wedding. A good video would capture it all for us and provide us with a living document of the day. Although, I did agree with DH that many wedding videos were a bit too hokey for my taste. Joe’s videos were different. I sat watching the samples on his website and got all teary eyed. His videos not only captured the essence of the day but were so tastefully and exquisitely edited and composed. Thankfully, DH selected Joe as one of his choices.

The unfortunate part about the selection process was that since DH didn’t want a video, when we met with the videographers he based his opinion on them versus a combination of them and their work. So, after meeting with our selection of videographers we were at odds between 2 videographers. DH liked Joe’s work, but he connected more with a videographer we met with who reminded me of someone he would have been friends with in college – a frat boy, jock. Meantime, I felt the work of DH’s choice was run of the mill and I connected more with Joe because he reminded me of someone I would have been friends with in college – a little more reserved and creative. Fortunately, after some debate DH realized that having a video was more important to me then him and he conceded to my choice.

Ironically, by maybe a quarter of the way into our wedding day, DH was so happy that we not only hired a videographer but that we hired Joe. We know that he captured the entire day and are confident that nothing was missed. In addition, like Kevin, he did so in an unobtrusive way. We hardly even noticed he was there. We know his artistic talents are going to come through in his editing and creation of our video and are so excited to see what he does (bring on the Kleenex!).

Joe’s videos are so wonderful that I think everyone should check them out and see how he’s able to capture the day so well that even a stranger’s wedding becomes an emotional experience: http://www.jpivideo.com

Muzic Makers (A)
Anton & Danny
Anton is a friend of a friend and someone I’ve known for years. He’s one of those people who knows how to play to a crowd and get things going. So it seemed a logical fit to have him Emcee our reception. Unfortunately, I only have his personal contact information. If you’re interested in contacting him, please FM me and we’ll figure something out.

Cactus Salon, Huntington Town & Country (C,A)
631-427-4750 – Michelle, Lisa

Ok, this vendor gets 2 grades because hair for my bridal party, MOB and MOG came out good, but mine did not. I think had I gone to one of the other stylists I may have been happier with my hair. Wait, let me back up and start from the beginning. I had gone for a hair trial with another vendor (rated below) and had a bad experience. So when I had my trial at Cactus I was just happy to have a decent looking hairdo. Unfortunately, this got in the way of me being able to judge whether or not the stylist could actually achieve the look I was going for. So, I booked her. I wanted a kind of B-52’s headband, big full curls kind of look – kind of sexy - but wound up with a princess/bride, banana curl kind of look. In addition, my hair had to be done twice the day of. To be honest, I was so caught up in the excitement of the day, that the stylist could have put my hair in a ponytail and I would have been happy. Fortunately for me, I have a wonderful sister and friend and as soon as they saw my hair they knew there was a problem. Apparently, my tiara was completely crooked, one side of my head was curly and the other side straight. They actually approached the manager about me going to another stylist, but I guess that’s bad salon etiquette so I got stuck with my original stylist (Michele). My sister and my friend sat down in front of me and instructed her step-by-step on what to do! Thank goodness they did because when I look at my pictures I can see the flaws – I can’t imagine what it would have looked like with the initial style and being so uneven. Like our choice in caterer, this is one vendor where I wish I had chosen someone else – I should have gone with the salon for the bridal party, MOB, and MOG and then ****** up the cost/time of an independent stylist (e.g. Jenn the Hair Genie) for myself.

*******************************

Shab Cosmetics (A+)
[email protected] or 631-889-1560 - Shab

Shab is amazing, wonderful and so sweet. I went in to my trial knowing what I wanted. We looked through the pictures and I talked through what I liked and didn’t like and she explained to me what she could do and couldn’t do based on my facial features. When she was doing my make-up she asked if she could try x, y, and z and I said yes. The final result was different from the look I had wanted but SO MUCH BETTER. It was great that she was able to talk me into coloring that was better for me than what I had wanted. I loved what she did and really liked the make-up she used. I left the make-up on all day and noticed that the mascara had started to smear underneath my eyes – something that’s very typical for me. I emailed Shab to let her know and she told me to come back in at my convenience and she would try different mascara. I’m not sure what she did, but it worked. The day of the wedding everyone’s make-up lasted all day/night and the colors used were perfect for everyone’s complexion. In addition, Shab’s attention to detail really came through as everyone’s make-up was perfectly applied and even/symmetrical. I was really impressed that all 9 of us were happy with the end results of our make-up applications.

If you’re looking for a fabulous make-up artist who will do applications at the salon or onsite for a reasonable price and make-up that will last all night definitely contact Shab.

Brides by Venus (D)
This is where I had my first hair and make-up trial. It was horrible. I spent three hours in a chair while a very inexperienced stylist curled my hair on a curling iron, put half of it up in a ponytail holder, and couldn’t figure out how the tiara worked. Bad bad bad. The make-up application was a lot quicker but it looked like make-up had been caked on me. I’m sure in photographs it would have looked ok, but face-to-face it was not good. To top off the horrible experience, it cost me an arm and a leg. I think the only reason I’m not giving this vendor an F is because when I told the owner how unhappy I was and why, she offered me another complimentary trial. I turned it down because I didn’t want to waste anymore time on a potentially bad experience.

David’s Bridal (A)
http://www.davidsbridal.com

I got my dress from David’s. Not much to report here. I knew which dress I wanted, I tried it on, I ordered it, and it was delivered in a timely fashion. I didn’t get my dress altered here as my sister had a nightmare experience with David’s Bridal altering her dress (it was butchered 2 weeks before her wedding and she had to find a new dress).

*******************************

Bridal Elegance (A-)
http://www.BridalEleganceNY.com

I had my dress alterations done here. Phyllis did a great job and had my dress done in time. The only reason she didn’t get an A+ was because she never suggested I walk around in the dress to check the length. The day of the wedding as I took my first steps I was tripping all over it. Thankfully my aunt is great with sewing so she altered the underside of the dress for me. I still wound up having to be really careful walking around because the outside of the dress was still a bit too long.

*******************************

Ecolin (A)
http://www.ecolin.com/

I wanted to wear a broach that my grandmother given my mother for me before she passed away. Unfortunately, it was costume jewelry, was corroded, and had some missing stones. Ecolin not only repaired the missing stones but cleaned it up beautifully. The only problem was that they did not reinforce the glue holding in the other stones so the day of the wedding, as I was getting the dress ready for our photographer, one of the stones fell out. My sister was able to Krazy Glue it back in but only after pictures had been taken.

*******************************

Cavenders (A)
http://www.cavenders.com/

I wanted to wear cowboy boots for our wedding in honor of my grandfather who was a farmer. When I was in Texas for work I mentioned this to a colleague of mine and he took me to Cavenders. As soon as I put these boots on I knew they were the ones. They matched the sash on my dress perfectly and were SO comfortable. The best part is that I still get to wear them because they look great with jeans.

*******************************

Burton’s (B)
http://www.burtonsbridals.com/

I ordered the bridal party dresses here. I had the typical Burton’s experience – dresses came in on time and were shipped to the girls that were out of state, but Carol wasn’t very nice to work with and she was a bit rude to the members of my bridal party who had their alterations done there. So, while end result was good, the experience wasn’t just about ok.

*******************************

Men’s Warehouse (B-)
We got tuxes for DH, groomsmen and FOG here. The quality of the tuxes was very good. The problem was this – they never ordered DH’s tux! In addition, they ordered the wrong color shirts. Here’s what happened. Several of the groomsmen and FOG were coming from out of state so we had arranged for their tuxes to come in to our local Men’s Warehouse so we could pick them up with DH’s tux. DH called the store 1 week before the wedding to confirm pick-up date and to make sure the tuxes would be in by then. He called the morning of the pick-up date to find out what time they were open until. He also ran through the list of guys he was picking up for and in that conversation it came out that a tux for him had never been ordered. Since we only have one car I had to leave work in the middle of the day to go pick him up so we could get to the store and try to figure out what to do. It was a mess – we were supposed to leave for Long Island that night and they wouldn’t be able to get a tux in until the afternoon the next day. The guy who worked with us was really helpful in trying to fix the mess – he found a way to get the tux shipped to a store on Long Island, reordered the correct shirts for FOG and groomsmen and then re-measured DH and placed an express order (yeah, it turned out that the guy who took his measurements originally never entered them into the system and apparently entered the wrong color shirt for the other tuxes). We wound up wasting about an hour there. THEN, when we went to pick up DH’s tux and the correct shirts from the Long Island store there was some mix-up with how the order had been placed and the computer system wasn’t letting the sales associate release the sale. We wound up wasting about an hour there. I would have given this vendor a C, but since the sales associates who tried to rectify things for us were so helpful, I decided to give them the B- instead.

Paperandmore.com (A+)
http://www.paperandmore.com

All of our stationary (STDs, invites, menus, programs, place cards, etc.) were designed and assembled by me and DH. We ordered the majority our paper supplies through Paper and More. Their prices were great, shipment fast and quality good.

*******************************

Oriental Trading (A+)
http://www.orientaltrading.com

We made napkin rings for dinner and ordered the kits through Oriental Trading. I wound up swapping out some of the beads that came with the kit for beads I bought at Michael’s so that they would match our color scheme. The kits were easy to assemble, shipment fast and quality good.

*******************************

Birch Craft Inc. (A)
http://www.birchcraftinc.com

I ordered the branches for our DIY centerpieces here. Quality and customer service were great and shipment fast. Prices were amazing.

*******************************

Jamali Garden (A)
http://www.jamaligarden.com

I ordered the base for our centerpieces here. Quality was great, shipment fast and prices reasonable.

Other DIY Projects (A – but I’m a bit biased. LOL)
Flowers (supplies from Michael’s and AC Moore), photo card box (supplies from Walmart), and guest quilt (supplies from Joann Fabrics, made by MIL and DH)

*******************************

Sheraton Four Points, Plainview (A)
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/fourpoints/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1476
516-694-6500 ext. 306 or 304 - Nicole Calonita or Crystal

Oh my gosh, the folks at the Sheraton Four Points were fabulous! In the days leading up to the wedding, Nicole and Crystal added rooms to our block upon our requests. The day we checked in the receptionist, Tanya, and the head of housekeeping worked together to find DH and I rooms for a very early check-in. Meantime, Crystal got members of the staff to put together a table to display our OOT bags on and showed me a cute sign she put together with information on our wedding that was going to be displayed on the front desk. The staff were so helpful and friendly. They were really sweet, too, because even though we did not book the honeymoon package we got to our room the night of the wedding and were greeted with a dozen red roses, petals on the bed, a bottle of champagne and chocolate.

The interior of the hotel itself is beautiful and well-kept. We had so many guests come up to us and comment on how nice the rooms were. The bar area was great and breakfast in the morning was good. The only reason this vendor did not get an A+ was because they were almost too good – we had one shuttle bus taking guests to Coindre Hall and (as I found out later) the front desk called everyone’s room to make sure they were on the shuttle. Unfortunately, this caused a delayed departure of the shuttle and thereby a delayed arrival at Coindre Hall which caused us to push back the ceremony time.

*******************************

Royalty Limo (A-)
http://www.royaltylimo.com/ or 516-326-9100

We needed a limo to drive groups of people all over the place the day of the wedding. For example, the girls and I had to get from hotel to salon to Coindre Hall, the guys and DH had to get from hotel to Coindre Hall, and family members needed to get from hotel to Coindre Hall. Every limo vendor we called wanted to give us a wedding package and charge us exorbitant rates. It was so frustrating because we didn’t need an aisle runner and all the extra stuff that comes with a wedding package. Royalty Limo was the only vendor who understood what we wanted and provided it at an extremely reasonable rate. In addition, the day of they surprised us with a cooler of soda, water and champagne. The only reason this vendor did not get an A+ was because the driver did not follow my directions from the salon to Coindre Hall and got lost…making me and the girls half hour late.

*******************************

Alert Bus (A)
631-471-4600 – Sue

We got a 55 passenger bus to do one run from hotel to Coindre Hall and then three runs from Coindre Hall to the hotel. Sue was great to work with to set up the itinerary, the driver was good and the bus was nice/clean. And pricing was unbeatable.

*******************************

Cudge.net (A)
http://www.cudge.net

We ordered our votive holders here. Quality was great, shipment fast, and prices amazing.

*******************************

Paramold (A-)
http://www.paramold.com/

We ordered our candles. I did a lot of research on where we could find the best pricing on candles and this vendor won hands down. Quality was great, shipment fast and prices amazing. The only reason I gave them and A- was because the votives did not match the pillar candles. When I contacted the company to question this and why it wasn’t noted on their website I was told that typically their customers wind up having space or decorative items between the votives and pillars so the color difference isn’t noticed. They were right!

*******************************

For Your Party (C-)
We got our matchbooks from this online vendor because they were the only place I could find that had colors to match our wedding colors. They had brown matchbooks and several variations of font (tangerine, copper, penny & orange) and they were reasonably priced. I wasn't really sure what color font would be ok with the brown. So I contacted them and they were very helpful, suggesting either penny or copper writing and font types. They even sent me samples so we could see the difference b/t the two font colors. We received the samples and based on how they were marked, we went with the copper. My credit card is charged the next day.

A week or so goes by and I still haven’t received any confirmation of my order or anything like that. I send an email. No response. I email a few days later and get a response. They told me that the brown matchbooks are out of stock but will be coming in in a couple of weeks and they would let me know when they arrive. A couple of weeks go by... I don't hear anything.... I send another email just to make sure I'm still on their radar. I get a response & am told that they had to turn down the delivery b/c the matchbooks were in really bad shape and they are not sure when they will get more. I email back asking them to please refund my credit card and let me know when they are in so I can reorder. No response. I send another email asking for my credit card to be refunded. No response. Third email did the trick and they refunded me.

A couple of months later (thank goodness I did this all a year before the wedding) I contact them to see if the brown matchbooks are back in stock. They are. I reorder brown with copper and notice the price has gone up! I email them asking if they can honor original price and get no response. Whatever, it's only a few bucks so I just ordered them. I finally get them and they have the wrong color font!

I contact them and explain that they did it in the wrong font, can they redo and resend free of charge OR can I use what they sent and they can refund me for a portion of the order. No response. I send a message through the form on their website (I should probably clarify that they did not have a phone number listed on their website so electronic communication was the only option I had). No response. I send them another email and mention the infamous words: BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. When I checked my voicemail later that day I discovered that within 10 minutes of me sending that email, they called.

The message is from the lady who was so helpful with fonts/samples. And she's all snippy. First she explains that she's emailed me several times and all of the messages keep getting bounced back to her so I must have blocked their address in my email. Odd, considering I did receive some of their emails. Then she goes on about how I ordered the copper font and that's what I got and they have a record of the order blah blah blah and I need to call her back to explain what my problem is.

I call back and she’s not in the office. I explain to the person who answered the phone and asked me what was going on that I placed my order based on the font samples they originally sent me so the samples must have been mislabeled and I wanted to see what could be done to rectify the situation. She needs to talk to the woman who left the message and will call back. Again I wind up in process where I’m chasing the woman who left the original message. After a week or she finally calls me back and claims that she had been trying to call me but couldn’t reach me (odd that my call log never captured any of her calls!). Anyhow, after two calls of me arguing with her she finally gets back to me to let me know that, whoops, the DID make a mistake.

We eventually got the matchbooks we wanted but the whole experience was PAINFUL, and hence me giving this vendor a C-.
