My 3/20/09 Long Review LOTS OF PRO PICS - FOX HOLLOW, DUET, NYVIDEOGROUP,STARLIGHT EXPRESS, FABLE BEAUTY, INNERSPIRIT DANCE, HONEYMOON AT SANDALS

My 3/20/09 Review

First things first, I give my DH and A+++++ times infinity. Over the time of us planning the wedding he has been the most patient and understanding person– and also letting me do basically what made me happy….I am so happy to have married a man like him!

Another “shout out” to my mom who is amazing. I am a marter when it comes to things and need to do stuff my way so I never ask for help. But she was my right side when I had stuff to do and needed someone to come with. Knowing the way I am she sat patiently, gave input when needed and helped me out with a lot of things. Also to my bm’s who really gave a hand when needed.

Ok…here it goes

3/20/09 – The date we chose was the first day of spring. Since spring represents new beginnings and life I thought it was the perfect date. My husband agreed. The only thing we were nervous about was if it snowed. But what were the chances it would snow on the first day of spring? Of course we woke up to a snow storm! However, I will take snow over rain any day. I wasn’t too worried. I was given rosary beads to hang outside my house and by noon the sun was shining with no snow on the ground!

BRIDES AND BRIDESMAIDS:

Bridal Dress and Veil - Valentina’s bridal – Brooklyn, NY : A+
They are amazing. Daniella was my sales girl and was also there every time I went for my fitting. The owner of the store was also there every time I went. It was a very warm and friendly environment – very homely. I never had any issues with my dress. I am very top heavy and always have an issue ordering clothes because I always have to order it 5x’s my size and have it tailored in at the waist and it never comes out perfect – it is always too big. Well, needless to say, this dress was perfect. The seamstress was fantastic – I think her name was Filomena. She was great. I had lost some weight by the time my wedding was here so it was still falling a little during the evening but that was my issue. There was no way she was going to still taylor my dress the day before my wedding – but I’m sure if I asked it would have been done. My dress was Casablanca item #1909. The second I put it on I knew it was it. I couldn’t find a veil I liked. I wasn’t into the puffy veils and wanted a mantia. Valentina was there when I was looking for one for my dress and she said not to worry and they will hand make a mantia veil for me which they did. It was made out of Venetian lace and had the beadwork/lace from my dress ordered to match it. It was a little on the pricey side but it is a one of a kind and totally worth it! It is the most beautiful piece ever made!! Definitely something that is going to be passed on.

Faux Fur Wrap – I bought this from David’s Bridal last minute. It was perfect and kept me warm!!

Bridesmaids/Junior bridesmaid dresses – Designer Jim Hjelm – Doris Fashions - Brooklyn, NY - A+ for customer service D- for quality of the product.
If there was one thing about my wedding that I knew I wanted from the get go it was the bridesmaids dress – color, style, fabric. My bridesmaids were all different shapes and sizes so I had to make sure I found something that would look stunning on all of them. I found a dress from Jim Hjelm #5677 – matte taffeta in wine. The dress was beautiful. I found Doris Bridal through a friend and dealt with Lana. She was great and the price there was even better – I don’t think I could have found that dress at a cheaper price – the service was superb as well as the alterations. Now, I don’t know if it was just the batch that my girls got or maybe the material, but EVERY DRESS WRIPPED! Right after the ceremony, the girls got into the limo and had to make an emergency stop at my house so my grandmother and aunt could sew the dresses back together!!! Thank goodness it was all in the seams but still. Could it have been the make or the fabric? Could it have been the seamstress (which I know a few girls that went there and had no problems)? I don’t know. So, I do not recommend this dress, nor do I recommend the type of fabric to be used!

Flower girl dress – David’s Bridal - A
Perfect. We went, picked it out along with the color sash and took it home. My friend had the dress hemmed and it was perfect.

Hair –
Hair Combs - Barron’s in Tri County Flea Market – A for customer service A+ for quality of the product.
I had a hard time finding what I wanted to put in my hair. I knew I wanted combs but wasn’t sure of the size, type, etc. I went here and they had one that I loved – but not in the metal color I wanted (It was in gold and I wanted silver). The lady there was awesome – she makes them herself and made me what I wanted. Granted, I went there twice which kind of annoyed me. I live in Brooklyn so going out there is kind of a pain. She couldn’t get the silver in by the time she told me they would be ready so she made it with something else. Instead of calling me to tell me I would have to wait another month, she assumed I was going to take what she had made and be on my way. So I went there to get them, and they were wrong. I waited about another month and got the right ones. In the end it worked out. I ordered two of them – medium size so I would wear one on each side. They were great quality and not expensive. The day of my wedding, Grace ended up putting them both on one side to make one large piece. It looked gorgeous!

Amadeus on Ralph Ave, Brooklyn – Grace: A+++++
The salon is great and everyone that works there is amazing. 7 out of my 9 bridesmaids plus my mom went and got their hair done there. Grace did my hair and it came out amazing! She is my regular stylist so I had total faith in her. We did a trial about a month before – I loved it and she hated the way it looked on me. She calls a spade a spade - so when the day came, she kind of did her own touch and twist to it…which was awesome. It came out so perfect that when I took my veil off in the evening – my hair didn’t fall (I have the straightest hair God can give anyone!).

Makeup – Fable Beauty – A+++++++
My best friend is a makeup artist and has her own company. I knew she was going to do my makeup – there was no question about it. She is amazing and it came out perfect! The pictures show for themselves. She also did my whole bridal party as well as my mom.

Bridesmaid Gifts – A boutique in Tri County, a website, and Kohls - LOL (I cant for the life of me remember the website – but it was a bridal site or the boutique – it was when you first walk in to the left) - A for all
I bought my girls a simple necklace – silver chain with a cubic solitaire diamond. They didn’t end up wearing it for the wedding because it didn’t match the accessories they all decided to wear – which was gold and was fine with me. I wanted to get them something that they can wear anytime. I got my maid of honor a matching set of earings. I also got them each a black tote bag with their names embroidered on it in a wine color along with slippers from kohls – in a goldish kind of color.

Flowergirl Jewlery Box: Lenox Childhood Memories - A+
This has to be the most beautiful jewelry box I have ever seen. My flowergirl is also my goddaughter and I wanted to get her something that would also be a keepsake. She is only 14 months so I wasn’t going to get her jewelry or anything like that. The jewelry box is all silver with a silver heart on top and we had her name engraved in it. Its gorg!

GROOM AND GROOMSMEN

Tuxedos – Classie Tux on 18th Ave, Brooklyn, NY - A+
My DH was very happy with them. We were originally going to Esquire on 65th street but something fishy was going on over there. One day they were open, the next they were closed, so from another LIWer, I found out about Classie Tux. They were very accommodating considering the boys went there two weeks before the wedding. The tuxes were perfect and all the boys looked so handsome.

Groomsmen Gifts: Executive Business Gifts – ebay – A+
We got them chrome shaving sets. I ordered them off of ebay. I ordered them and in one week I received them. All the boys loved it. I even ordered one for DH and he loves it (he even brought it on our honeymoon to use).

Best Man Gift: HumidorVault.com - B+
Our bm is a cigar smoker so what better than a nice humidor gift set. I originally order a specific set and was supposed to receive it in a week. After two weeks I called the company and they told me it was on backorder. I couldn’t wait so I had to get a different gift set. It was beautiful and he and absolutely love it!

Ring Bearer Gift: Ed at the Little booth in Tri County – A+
Just love him! Our ring bearer is also DH’s godson so we wanted to get him something a little more personalized so we ended up with a gold id bracelet. It was perfect!

WEDDING DAY:

Invitations: Carlson Craft – Me
I am a retailer of Carlson Crafts and do invitations. So it obviously, I would be doing my own invitations. I used clear labels to address the envelopes. It came out perfect.

Church Programs – My bridesmaid Nicole A++++++++++
She went to staples and bought the programs from there. She did a fantastic job!! She incorporated my colors into the formatting. I love her!

Isle Runner – This was a DIY project for me. Me and the dh did this. I bought it from party city.

Cake Topper – Crystaltopper.com – A
We got a cake topper with our last name initial in all sworvzky crystals. The product was great it just took a little longer to receive it than said.

Favors – I put the favors together myself with the help of my girls. I bought gold bags and included in them were chocolate – lyndts choc which I bought from a candy store on ebay – in clear boxes which I bought from party city and also included was a cd that I made with wedding songs. I created the label on the cds with a lable maker from staples.

Additional things – Napkins, matchbooks, bubbles for the church, etc. Once again, I got all of this stuff from Carlson Crafts.

Thank you’s – Plush photography – A+++++++++
My friends photographer did our thank you cards. I didn’t want a traditional card so she made them for us. They came out AMAZING!!!!!! So many people call me to tell me how beautiful they were. I give Kim and A++++++.

We got our my engagement ring through a friend and had some issues. LOOOONNNNGGGG story. But in the end it worked out. So I’m not really going to review on his place.

Wedding Bands: Ed at the Little booth in Tri County - A+
Ed gave us such a deal and the rings are amazing. He actually reset my engagement ring so that way it would match my wedding band. Due to the issues I had with my engagement ring, he knew how anal I was with my diamond so he made sure I was there for all the diamond settings. Even for my wedding band. DH was also very particular in the design he wanted. He actually ended up with two rings. He works with his hands so to get a nice one for everyday wasn’t really doable. I couldn’t tell you the compliments we got on our rings during our honeymoon. I would recommend anyone to him.

Limos – Royalty Limos – Franklin Square, NY - C+
Royalty came highly recommended to us by many people. One of my good friends used to drive for them part time while he was in school. A lot of my friends used them for their weddings and I know a lot of LIWers used them. So why not book with them. Now, when we signed the contract with them, they gave us a great deal on two Chrysler limos and the Bentley for me and my husband. Included in the contract was also drop off to the airport if we don’t want to get driven home the night of the wedding. All of the limos showed up on time. All of the drivers were very attentive to us and our bridal party. Now, everyone left the ceremony to go take pictures at the Old Westbury Gardens at the same time – photographer, videographer and my ring bearer’s mom (he was too little to go in the limo). I am coming from Brooklyn, so basically there is only two ways to go. One of them is guaranteed traffic for hours with no way around it (like no sidestreets). We told the limo driver this and he didn’t listen to us. He insisted that the one way that was guaranteed to be traffic it was faster. Maybe he just didn’t get that it was 4pm on a Friday afternoon? Yes, on the belt there is always traffic, but you can get off and take sidestreets to move around it. We were supposed to be at the Gardens by 4:30pm – we did not arrive till almost 5:45!!! Everyone was there waiting for us for about 45mins to an hour – and they ALL took the belt. Don’t get me wrong…on that day, I could have cared less. There was nothing that could have bothered me. But when we went over everything that weekend we were pissed! So now, on top of paying a fee to take pictures for 1 ½ hours in which we only had 45mins there (totally worth it though) we had to pay and extra hour o/t for the limos!!!! Just because the driver insisted on the GCP!! We ****** it up and just said that when we call to reserve the car for the airport we will let Joe the owner know about it. We called the next afternoon to reserve the car and spoke with Joe. He then proceeded to tell me that they “don’t do the car to the airport” service anymore. IT WAS IN OUR CONTRACT!!! While I was on the phone with him, my husband was flipping out. Joe then told us he would have to read the contract and then call me back. He called back apologizing and saying if we still wanted the car we can book it. My lovely husband told him where to go and hung up. This is just my experience with them and feel an obligation to share it. I know there are issues with many things while planning a wedding, but this was the last one I thought I would have an issue with. Many people love them and were fine, but not me. So I DO NOT recommend them.

Photography - Duet Photography – Jay A+++++++++++++++++++++++
I loved Jay from the day I met him in 2006 when he worked my friends wedding and climbed a tree to take an airel shot of the bridal party! The day of my wedding he was fantastic and so was his partner. Every picture taken was perfect! On our way to the church, he spotted a 9/11 mural for a fallen fire fighter in my neighborhood and insisted we take pics in front of it when we left the church. Who would have thought that??? And those have to be a few of my favorite pictures out of the 3000 he took!!! He was just really good and has a great eye for things. Sue and Eric at the store are great as well. I harassed Sue when it came time to get my proofs and also when I was trying to put my album layout together – she has patience of a saint. I HIGHLY recommend them.

Videography – NY Video Group – Franklin Square, NY – A+ for customer service, B for quality of the product.
I went to the bridal show at Chateau Briand and won their video package which was a basic package. They are great guys and really take care of their customers. Since I won the package I added an additional cameraman in for additional $$ and I also had them put together a video of the ceremony to play before we entered the reception for an additional $$ – this came out beautiful!!! As for when I got the video, I wasn’t “wow’ed” by the actual footage. The video is in chapters which I loved. The highlights and the introduction and montage (which my dj put together and provided to them) which had all of our wedding music in the background was AMAZING. But when watching the actual ceremony and reception, it was like I could have had my brother tape it. We had two cameras so I thought we would have had better angles and footage. We also spoke about few additional things I wanted added in that I was excited for, and it wasn’t in it (i.e. bridal party introduction to the video). They gave me a raw copy of it and I was able to tell them what I wanted changed. They were only able to change about 50% of it. I have recommended them to one of my friends and she had the same issue. I don’t know of anyone else who used them, but this is my experience. I would recommend them because they are reasonably priced and when it came down to the technical stuff – highlights and introduction and montage (which is what I show everyone when they want to see the video) they were excellent. You can see the highlight to our ceremony on their website - www.nyvideogroup.com - in newly married - Sandra and Pasquale 3/20/09

Flowers – Dyker Florist – Brooklyn, NY – A+++++++
I LOVED them. I dealt with George and he was awesome! I was recommended to them through a friend who knows them personally and who uses them for everything. My other friend used them for her wedding and she loved them. All of my bouquets were beautiful and all of the boutiners were perfect and my centerpieces were AMAZING! I wanted something with branches – not the typical ball of flowers – not that they aren’t gorgeous, but I wanted different. He designed it himself and when I first saw it I was amazed. The pictures don’t even do them justice. They were tall branches with gardenia attached to them. They had hanging candles and a ring of hydrangeas. He also decorated the church for me and was going to do my house, but we told him no. He gave us a great deal. I HIGHLY recommend them!

St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Deacon Frank – Brooklyn, NY – A+++++
We got married on a Friday during lent. They are a VERY religious church so they told us we were not able to have too many decorations/flowers and that we would have to take everything out when we left (well, not us, but we wouldn’t be able to leave it as a donation to the church). I spoke with the deacon who married us and he was fine with what I wanted. I even convinced him to keep the flowers we used. (Even though it wasn’t much, I wasn’t lugging them out of there.)

Photography site - Old Westbury Gardens – A++++++++++++
I knew I wanted to take pictures here from when I first saw it in Cruel Intentions. I LOVED the mansion and the landscaping. As I said earlier, we were really late and they were awesome. I called them to tell them and was more worried that they were going to cut my session short there (which is what they do and is stated in the contract if you are late.) The woman I spoke with told me not to worry and I will have all the time I needed. We only were there for 45mins because we had to get to the hall. I wanted to take pictures on the grass in the back of the mansion, but since it was freezing and it snowed that morning, I wasn’t trecking on wet cold grass, nor was I making my friends – we were shivering the whole time outside. So we took pictures on the steps and in the hall inside. They all came out awesome. Everyone told me that it was “good pickings” to take the pictures and worth standing out in the cold. I HIGHLY recommend going here to take the pictures!

RECEPTION AND ENTERTAINMENT

Reception – Fox Hollow – Woodbury, NY – Overall - A++++++++++++
Place A+++++ - I have been here several times for client holiday parties but never a wedding. I have never been disappointed with the service nor the food. So, when it was time to book, this was in the top two of my choices. We wanted a place that held no more than two weddings/parites at a time. We didn’t do an A and B list. We just invited everyone we wanted there which totaled about 260 people. So we also knew we had to find a room we loved that would hold that many people comfortably but also be not too big if we only ended up with 150. When I brought my husband there to check it out he wanted it there. We LOVED the Garden Room and also the outside of it. We went during Christmas time and it looked like a winter wonderland! We just loved it.

Customer Service A++++++ - I was told to only deal with Frank which I did and am so thankful for him. He was amazing!!! He did everything he could for me and more. Gave me little extras here and there to make me happy. Everything that day, with the exception of two hiccups, went PERFECTLY!! The matre de was fantastic as well as the bridal attendant. They were very on top of things and also made sure we were fed and hydrated the whole night…LOL.
My two hiccups – which aren’t that serious and it could have happened to anyone at any place you get married – 1) When they turned the air on my father in law smelt gas or something not normal. We smelt nothing but had them shut the air off. At the end of the night – right after we cut the cake - they put the air back on. I started to get a really bad headache and was nauseous. My little cousin as well as my husband’s god daughter got sick. For me I thought it was just my nerves from the day. When everyone cleared out, we smelt what my father in law smelt from earlier that evening and it was only in the area where we were sitting. They shut the system off immediately. The bridal attendant noticed it and contacted Frank who would call me the next morning. They are obviously not going to tell us something was wrong, but we are convinced there was a leak with their HVAC system. It wasn’t something that would be noticed by anyone. NO ONE knew it or brought it to anyone’s attention. I didn’t even know it until the end of the night – right before we were leaving. Frank apologized a million times and invited us back for dinner and to stay over. We didn’t take him up on it because it really wasn’t a big deal, but it is something I wouldn’t hide from anyone. 2) Being an anal person and I don’t like my things touched, at the end of the night, the bridal attendant/matre de took everything in the bridal room and shoved it all onto one cart to take over to the inn for us. This is probably something all bridal attendants do? I don’t know, but me personally, I wasn’t happy about it. However, when my friend got married there in July, she made sure they didn’t do this and they didn’t. So if you don’t are like me, make sure you tell your matre de/bridal attendant.

Food – A++++++ - Everything I put in my mouth was EXCEPTIONAL!!!!! One of the reasons why they were one of the two places I wanted to get married in. The Viennese hour was AMAZING!!! Everything that was served was great!

Wedding Cake – Design A+++ Taste – C I am a very simple person so when it came time for my cake design I wanted a simple white cake with some intricate designs on it. The actual look of the cake was EXACTLY how I wanted it. Now for the actual flavor – the bakery they use I was told was not “top notch”. I was also told to get a regular type cake – like vanilla or chocolate with a filling. So I guess it was my fault in the end for not listening. Now, I am a HUGEEEE red velvet fan and always wanted that to be my wedding cake. Its hard to get a good red velvet cake but I would think being associated with a popular catering hall, they would make it superb! Well, I am going to admit - it was horrible. I was so excited for it and we were disappointed. I wasn’t too concerned because we had the Viennese hour but if we didn’t we would have not been happy. I also thought maybe it was just my cake. I told my friend who got married there NOT to get red velvet and she did. It was just as horrible…it tasted like strawberry pound cake with cream cheese filling (we think they just used flavored food coloring in a regular pound cake mix to get the color). We still laugh about it. If you are going to get your wedding cake from the bakery the Fox Hollow uses, I would recommend getting a basic inside – unless you have tried it before from there.

Entertainment
Starlight Express – Mineola, NY (I think they moved) - A++++++++++++
I LOVED them. They made my whole wedding. I was recommended to them by two people and saw them at my friends wedding. Our Emcee was KOKO. I originally wanted Vinny – the owner – as my Emcee. But when I had to go in to go over the music with them, we ended up sitting with KOKO so I decided to have him as the Emcee. He had great energy. He had everyone up when they needed to be. My dance floor was rocking the whole time which is what I wanted!!! I also added a percussionist. I recommend doing this. Not only was it awesome to hear, but it was a lot of fun because they let my guests play them! I HIGHLY recommend Starlight and KOKO!!!
We also hired a photo journalist to take photos and put them on the screens throughout the night. I don’t think I saw the guy once. When I got the cd of the pictures there were about 500 photos and they were all fantastic!!!!

Inner Spirit Dance – Northport, NY - A+++++++
I wanted some “dinner entertainment” and surprised my guests with some belly dancing entertainment. My friend is Greek and had a belly dancer at her wedding and we love it and so did my parents so we thought it would be cool. I found Rhoni at Inner Spirit Dance online and went to see her in person. We wanted three dancers. The day of my wedding she surprised us and showed up with a total of five girls!!! It was great. No one expected it and they put on an awesome show. After about 15-20 mins of them dancing, everyone was basically done with dinner so they pulled people up and danced. It was so much fun!!! Everyone loved it!

Koko - Emcee

The Inn at Fox Hollow – Woodbury, NY – A
We stayed over at the Inn the night of the wedding and it was perfect. We didn’t want to go all the way back to Brooklyn. My husband drove his car there the day before and left it so we would be able to drive home the next day. We didn’t have their breakfast so I can’t comment on that. But as for the room it was immaculate and all set up for us when we got there.

HONEYMOON
Sandals Royal Bohemian – Nassau, Bahamas – A+++++
Its beautiful here and was perfect for us. We have been here before and loved it so we decided to go back. I didn’t want a “travel” honeymoon. We had so much going on I wanted to just veg for a week! My husband is also a sun lover. I on the other hand have had three melanomas removed so me and sun don’t mix. I didn’t want to deprive my husband – he was so excited to go, so I figured I can lay under an umbrella the whole time. They were the most accommodating to us. I told them my situation and they had seats and umbrellas reserved for me the whole week even though we weren’t technically “entitled” to it. The food was great, the weather was perfect and the beaches were romantic. I recommend this place to anyone!!!!

Thank you for sharing! Everything looked beautiful and you made a gorgeous bride! I love hearing good things about Duet...I'm worried about Royalty though- hopefully we won't have problems. My FH lives in the city and the limo is taking them out to L.I.

Thank you for sharing! Everything looked beautiful and you made a gorgeous bride! I love hearing good things about Duet...I'm worried about Royalty though- hopefully we won't have problems. My FH lives in the city and the limo is taking them out to L.I.

Duet was awesome!!! as for Royalty, I may have just been that one in a million that had an issue. My friend used them after me and they were fine, she jsut made it a point to them that what she says goes - ie if there is traffic, what way to take. Just be stern with them if you have to.....
