*:·-:¦:-·:*Our AMAZING Black & white 11/29/08 (Thanksgiving weekend) wedding (Captain Bills, Thomas Paul, Burtons, Camelot, Level DJ, Head Rush salon, + MORE * lots of pics)*:·-:¦:-·:*
I am finally posting my review. Let me preface this by saying I live in FL, and did about 90% of my planning via the internet. phone, email. ALthough I did hire a DOC, I did mostly everything myself. When I came to long island to visit every few months, I crammed in as much wedding things as I could, but I mainly relied on the internet. I did so much research on the computer and everything came together for an amazing day. So for all of you out of state brides, yes it is overwhelming, but it is certainly doable. We also were very budget conscious in many areas of planning.I almost feel that by being out of state, I was able to not be as picky about certain things (ie: FG dresses, BM dress fittings, color of ribbons for favors, etc) - I let alot of those things, go and left it up to those people to worry about, which was probably for the best.
Enagement ring/wedding ring/DH's ring:
Jared The Galleria of Jewelry (Palm Beach Gardens, FL). I knew the type of E-ring I wanted, something with a slight vintage look to it. We looked at several jewelers, and I happened to find this setting at Jared one day. There were a few I liked, and left it up to DH to decide, when he was ready to propose. He chose the diamond, and couple of months later after 3 years dating, he proposed on 6/15/07. He tied a ribbon around our dachshund's neck, with the ring attached, and the rest was history...
The great thing about the setting, was that it came as a set with the wedding ring. I really wanted a wedding ring that would sit flush to the setting, and it fit perfect. A few months before the wedding when we picked out DH's ring there, I got an enhancer there for the other side of the rings. The service is always excellent at Jared, and they have extended plans to buy for the rings/diamond that covers it for life.
STD's:
Vistaprint.com
We decided that we wanted to get married in cold weather, since we are in the heat in FL year round. We decided on 11/29/08. They were shipped fast, and everyone really liked them. They had that classic look I really wanted.
(edited pic to blur our name)Invitations:
www.einvite.com (Costco's site): Since we were doing a black/ivory theme, I knew I wanted something a little different, not a white invitation. Sounds morbid, but my invitations were all black, but were classy as h ell. We got so many compliments written back to us on our response cards. I loved how they looked and the fonts were beautiful. The price was also insane! The quality was very good too. I just couldnt see spending more than a couple hundred bucks on an invite that people just toss in the garbage.
We also printed the labels ourselves for the envelopes. Assembling the invites was prob my least favorite part of wedding planning.
Shoes: A++
I forgot what site I ordered these from, but they were NINA shoes, and were really pretty, but did hurt a bit.
I changed into slightly lower heels (not into the flip flop thing) that I got at MACYS for $20 on sale. They were so pretty, and were like slippers. I danced all night long.
macys shoes
Headband/veil: A++
Barrons/Tri-County: Flea markets scare me.. but their prices cannot be beat. I explained I wanted a finger tip length veil, with rolled edges. I also had him scatter crystals here and there on the veil. It was very plain, but elegant.
The headband was very simple too. It added just enough glitz that I was looking for, nothing too over the top.
Day of Jewelry: A++
Ebay: I really loved this deco bracelet from e-bay. Even better, it was like $22! I also ordered a few pairs of chandelier earrings, and decided to wear these on my wedding day. I initially bought a solitiare necklace, but I didnt want to take away from my dress and neckline, and I felt my earrings and bracelet were enough.
Wedding gifts to each other: DH and I are both watch fanatics. He has several expensive, dressy watches. I know he was looking for a more casual watch, and I saw him eyeing this Swiss Army watch one day while we were at the jeweler, and decided thats what I would get him.
He got me a Raymond Weil watch, love it.
BM dresses:
Bill Levkoff / Renate's Bridal in Lindenhurst: D!!!!
The prices here are good, but dont let that sucker you in like it did to me. I ordered the black taffeta dress, but they didnt make the sash in champagne color for that dress. The dress came with a sand colored satin ribbon, which I wasnt crazy about. My aunt was kind enough to buy the champagne colored taffeta, and sew 4 sashes for my BM's. Anyway, back to Renate's, the salesgirl Melissa was nice and helpful, The seamstress was a nightmare. First of all, 2 of the BM who are maybe a size 8, were told to order size 14/16! Anyway, they had to take these dresses in so much, they needed so many alterations. The dresses were then taken in way too much, that she had to add panels to the dress. You cant see it in the pics, but the sides of the dresses looked like $hit. Furthermore, all my BM's were pulling up their dresses all night long, since she apparently does not know how to alter a chest properly. Buy your BM dress here, but take them elsewhere for alterations please.
Tuxes:
RSVP in Bayshore: A++
We first went to Wedding World in Commack, cause a friends family member worked there or something and told us to come in. It was a horrifying experience. We went to the tux dept, and there was a 16 yr old girl who was helping us. She had zero experience in outfitting a groom for a wedding. She had only 2 tuxes for him to try on, and wanted us to pick out tuxes and GM vests from a BOOK! Call me crazy, but this is your wedding day, you dont choose his tux from a book, you want to try on a few things to see what looks best! She said the only other tux jacket to try on was for another man's wedding the following day!!!!! W T F!?!?!?!! I told her sorry, this is not going to fly with me, and we left. We drove to RSVP in Bayshore, and wow - it was like night and day. The girl here (I think her name was Jennifer) was sooooo nice, so helpful, so dang knowledgeable about tuxes. Who knew there were so many styles? She outfitted DH in about 6 diff tuxes/vests/pants/shoes, right down to socks, to see what looked best. They have so many to chose from on site, so many vest colors/patterns, shoes.. you name it. The prices were a lilttle high, but they were Calvin Klein, and all the guys looked GREAT, esp DH!
Something old, new, borrowed, blue:
Old: my grandmother's diamond wedding band ( I wore it on my middle finger)
New: dress, jewelry
Borrowed: bracelet
Blue: undies

Re: Our amazing black/white 11/29/08 wedding (Captain Bills, Thomas Paul, Burtons, Camelot, Level DJ, Head rush salon, + MORE!)
My dress (Maggie Sottero / Cassady):Aurora Unique Bridal Boutique - Melbourne, FL: A+++++++
I went to 2x to go dress shopping in NY. I did not have a great experience at Lillettes or at Bridal Reflections in Massapequa. I found the ladies at B.R. to be kinda rude, and snobby - they were not gonna get my business acting like that. I went to Lillette's and explained that I was looking specifically for mermaid/trumpet style gowns. What did she bring out? Dresses she liked.... I had done enough dress shopping to know the style I wanted and looked good for my body type. It was very frustrating when people do not listen, and waste your time. I also went to Burtons, and their prices were awesome. Anyway, I did alot of looking online, and was actually looking for a Maggie that apparently wasnt even being made anymore. Oh well. So when my mom came down to FL to visit me, I decided to call Aurora, and ask if they carried that particular style. They didnt, but the owner told me they carried dozens of mermaid dresses. Off we went.... The girl was so helpful and patient with me. She pulled about 20 dresses, and I tried on a few I really did like. But when I put the Cassady on, it just looked amazing, and knew that would be the dress! MY mom and I both loved it! We bought it, and when we heard the price, we were in shock - it was less than $700!!!! I had 2 fittings, which were perfect - the dress needed very few alterations. I have a large chest, and opted not to sew cups into the dress - the corset back held me in perfectly.
DIY Stuff: (I will give myself an A!! Never knew I was so crafty)
We made our own programs, table numbers, unity candle and place cards. My aunt made my cardbox.
Programs were easy enough, did them on the computer and brought them to Office Max to be copied. Looked great, got the ribbon at Michaels
Table #'s: I used Scriptina font and bought the frames off of E-bay. Printed them on photo paper.
Unity Candle: Bought the velum and ribbon at Michaels, and found a few flourishes I liked. Printed it out, used glue dots and that was that!
Place cards: Bought the christmas ball holders at Pier 1 the year before. I loved them because the champagne color matched the BM sash on their dress. I used an embosser for the corners, and printed them out on ivory business cards. (these took a while!)
Menus: I loved how they turned out, again lots of compliments. Bought everything at Michaels, DH cut the dimensions, printed everything at Office Max, again used glue dots, so the paper didnt warp (like it does with liquid glue) and again, used the embosser for the corners. (these took a long time to do)
BM Dress sashes: my aunt made these. Bought taffeta fabric at joanns, and she sewed 4 of them. they looked great!
Card box: My aunt made it for me, and it was so beautiful. I bought the fabric at Joann's and left the rest up to my aunt. She really is talented, and I received so many compliments on it.
Favor tags: We made these on the computer too, and bought special scissors to cut a nice border. The monogram a friend made for us. They came out great. We gave a Lenox bud vase as our favor. I ordered boxes online, shipped them them to NY, and my mom and aunt wrapped each box beautifully for me!
Bridal Shower:
Irish Coffee Pub, Islip NY: A+++
My family and I have been going here for years. Their food is really delicious, and the place is very quaint. I knew about my shower, as I had to fly up for it, so it was nice. I was able to dress nicely, and greet everyone as they came in. The food was great, as was the cake. Everyone had a nice time, and I got tons of gifts It turned out to be a huge problem getting all of the gifts from NY to FL. Thankfully DH's friend works for UPS, and took care of it for us.
Napkins/matches:
foryourparty.com - A++++
Loved these, they came out great, fast shipping, no complaints.
Hair/Makeup Trial #2 (Head Rush Salon - Christine and Erica) A+
I really liked my hair trial - I loved the back of it, but I wanted more 'poof' in the front.
The makeup came out great - DH loved it.
Hair/Makeup on Day of Wedding (Head Rush Salon)
Hair: B-
Makeup: A++
I got the recommendation from Jenn04 - I loved her hair! Christine and Erica from Headrush came to my house. Christine did my hair, my mom's and my MOH. We all looked great, but my pinned curls started to fall out at the church. Thankfully my wonderful DOC whipped out pins, and put my hair back together again. I just felt for the $$$$ price she charged, my hair should have stayed in for years.. Lol! I also had to keep spraying my hair the entire night, as my side kept falling in my face - not a big deal, but still...
Erica did my makeup and it was wonderful! I didnt do airbrush, she used all MAC makeup and it held up the entire night and then some. My eyes looked great, and my lashes were so full. I def recommend using fake lashes. Makes such a difference with dramatic eyes. I felt beautiful and never had to touch up a thing, besides my gloss!
Again, I felt they were pretty pricey, but I rationalized that since I didnt spend much on my dress, I could spend extra on hair and makeup.
Dance Lessons:
Crystal Ballroom (Jensen Beach, FL) A++
We decided to take 6 lessons for our first dance. I really didnt want to rock back and forth. We also didnt tell any family/friends about our lessons, so when the song started, everyone was truly WOWED! The dance was beautiful - and perfectly timed, right down to our dip at the end. I really recommend taking a few lessons, if you are able to afford it. DH actually liked the lessons, and our teacher Kevin was great.

Re: Our amazing black/white 11/29/08 wedding (Captain Bills, Thomas Paul, Burtons, Camelot, Level DJ, Head rush salon, + MORE!)
FG dresses:Burlington A+: They were maybe $30, the girls looked cute, the ivory was the perfect shade to match my dress.
Bachelorette Party
Several bars in NYC: A--
We took a limo into the city after we had dinner. Camelot provided the limo, and the driver was really nice and ontime. The Kettle One was flowing, and honestly, I dont remember alot of the night, but I do remember us having a blast. I was hungover for 2 days.
Thomas Paul Photo: B+
We really liked Tom and his style of photos. I am only giving him a B+, because although we liked our proofs, we were not IN LOVE. I wish I had more photos of me and my BM's - it felt very rushed, and there are certain shots that I didnt get. I also feel like we didnt get enough photos of DH and I facing forward toward the camera. We have plenty of us kissing, or sharing a moment, but none that we really like facing front toward the camera. Also, there is only 1 pic of DH as I am walking down the aisle. I wish there were more church shots. We all rushed out of the church, since we wanted to capture the last moments of sunlight. I am sure if this was in the summer, our pics would have been different. Our video is still pending - so I cant comment on that yet. I liked our E-pics too, that we did at Old Westbury Gardens.
Church of St. Joseph - Babylon, NY: A+ (do you really rate a church?)
DH and I did not attend St Joes growing up. I actually belong to OLPH, and they were very very difficult to deal with in the beginning. I got so frustrated with them, that I opted to not even get married there, and went right to St. Joes. Father Heller arranged for us to meet, and he booked our date right there. We did our FOCCUS and Pre cana in Florida, which was easy and hassle-free, just how I like it! We did a full mass also. St Joes does charge an arm and a leg to get married there, and for the music fee too. Overall I have no complaints.
Flowers by Burton: A+
We met with Mike about 8 mos before the wedding. I def recommend bringing pics of what you want to the florist. I did so, and told him I wanted low CP's. I had already bought about 15 boxes of tall candle holders the year before for the tables, so I asked Mike to build the CP's around it. They did and they looked great. I also brought him pics of what I wanted my bouquet to look like. I ordered 3 pomanders for the FG's - they started to falll apart a bit, but the FG's were throwing them around, and being rough on them. They had great prices, the flowers arrived early to my house on the wedding day, and looked great in pics! Again, no complaints here.
CP sample before wedding
CP at our wedding, loved it!

Re: Our amazing black/white 11/29/08 wedding (Captain Bills, Thomas Paul, Burtons, Camelot, Level DJ, Head rush salon, + MORE!)
RH DinnerPapa Joe's in Commack - C+
Ehhh.... we got there, the tables werent even set up. Bread was not on the tables, nor were salads. It just took them a really long time to get their act together. Once they did the food was decent. Not the best place, not the worst.
Limo's - Camelot A
They were great - they arrived on time/early - it was cold out the driver offered to give me his coat. The heater didnt work too well in the Rolls Royce, but i wasnt overly concerned. The BP got the Escalade I believe - I didnt even see the inside of it, but I heard it was nice. The only thing I dont like is they charge you extra if you dont pay your balance in cash. Isnt that illegal to do?
Cocktail hour guitarist:
Matt Cuttillo - A
Again, I found him online, he gave me a song list, i liked the type of tunes he played (elton John, Billy Joel John Mayer, sinatra, etc.). I booked him through a site called gigmasters.com.
he was timely and always answered my emails. He sounded good, and off he went after the CH.
DJ/Percussionist/Uplighting:
Level DJ's - A
We heard about Level from a friend. We met with Joey and we liked what we saw. DH and I are really particular with music. I wanted nothing cheesy, or Sweet sixteen-ish to be played - my do not play list was a mile long. Joey is the DJ to use if you do not want that kind of music played. He was a class act- and the MC was great too (he was the guy from Growing up Gotti (quack quack). He was really great too, very 'non-invasive', and didnt feel the need to own the spotlight like a lot of DJ's do.
We also got a percussionist through Level too. I def recommend using one - it makes the dance songs literally 'come to life'. No one sat down at our wedding - the dance floor was fully packed all night - we had such a blast!
We also got our uplighting done with Level. Totally transformed the look of our room. Every few mins it would change from purple, to amber to pink to green and so on. It looked simply beautiful!!!
Growing up Gotti MC ...lol. He was really good.

DOC:
Francesca/Dazzling affairs: A+++++
Planning from FL was tough, but I I did every single thing myself - did not really have much assistance at all from friends or family. However, I felt the need for a DOC, just to help tie in all the loose ends, oversee everything and then some. I was a little skeptical exactly what a DOC would do for us.... Boy, did she perform. Overperform actually. We used Francesca from Dazzling Affairs, and she was beyond great.
She helped out at the house getting ready, with me, the BM's, my mom, my dress, coordinating w/ the photogs, helping my FG's who got a little cranky. A curl fell out of my hair, she pulled out bobby pins in 2 seconds. My gloss wore off, and before I could even ask for it, she whipped it out. She was lint brushing FH after the ceremony before pics, handled all the tips. She did a million other things too long to type, and was there until the very end of the night. She just made sure every single thing was as we wanted. I highly recommend her, and feel every bride could use an extra set of experienced/skilled hands on their wedding day.
DH was a little unsure of her too. like what is she gonna do that anyone else cant? By the end of the church, he was loving her. She ushered everyone out, not to form a receiving line, pacified my crying FG's, carried them out of the pics if need be, whipped out bobby pins out of her pocket when a curl came out, lint brushed DH a dozen times, we forgot to make a seating card for 2 guests... she whips out a copy of my seating chart and seats them. there were a million other things, she just made sure the day went smooth. She boxed up everything at the end of the night. You and your family will be tired, she just ties up all the loose ends. The week before the wedding, she will call all your vendors, and confirm times and such - you dont need to. she will put together a great timeline.. She was GREAT!!!!
Cake:
Black Forest - A+
Showed them a pic of what I wanted - the made it. It looked great, and tasted great. I paid a little extra for it, but it was worth it.
CAPTAIN BILLS: A+++++++++++++++++++
This place turns alot of brides off cause of the name. Yes, it is a seafood restaurant that has been in Bayshore for decades. But the Bayview House next door is their catering hall, and its fabulous. It had 'that look' that I wanted - nothing overly done, simple and elegant, beautiful floor to ceiling windows overlooking the bay, and the food is to die for. The price cannot be beat, esp for a winter time wedding. They were so accommodating, one wedding at a time - and we were able to pay for our wedding 3 days beforehand, instead of making payments each month like alot of halls require. DH and I are real foodies, he is in the food business, so this was very important to us. The food was amazing, guests were asking for 2nds. I made sure to eat everything. The entrees were really delicious, as was the cocktail hour food. The catering Manager Donna was really great to work with - she set up our entire room for us too. She also made sure to have the christmas decor up (they put it up the day before our wedding).
Honeymoon:
Aventura Spa Palace: FFFFFFFF!
See my review under the honeymoon board. It was horrible, and we checked out 16 hours later. I know alot of ladies on here liked it, but we did not have a good experience. I cut and pasted my posting from that board:
Let me first start out by saying that I know alot of brides on here have had a good experience at Aventura Spa Palace, at least from their reviews. We chose Aventura based on high praise from our travel agent, and many ladies on here raving about it...
But I felt I owed a heads up to you ladies who plan on booking here for your upcoming honeymoon.
So anyway.. we left Miami and flew into Cancun. Aventura is about 1 hour or so south of the airport. We checked in, and to be quite honest we werent exactly 'wowed'. DH and I normally stay at nice hotels when we travel, so we were a little disappointed but didnt say so even to one another.
The room was decent, and we went down to the pool areas. This resort is HUGE - we were starving, having not eaten all day, and were excited to eat at one of the 8-10 restaurants. We were told we could either eat at the snack bar/palapa near the pool, or go inside to the restaurant to eat. The snack bar buffet consisted of boiled hotdogs, dry sauerkraut, tortilla chips, dried and pasty refried beans, and cheez wiz. Not our idea of the 4 star resort food and cuisine they so advertised.
The grounds were so-so, definitely not the picturesque grounds that were advertised on their site. This place had definitely seen better days,, probably in 1992. The grounds where grass or landscaping should have been was dirt, or sticks.
So we went into the restaurant. Here they had a LARGE buffet set up, with so many things to choose from. Again, not the most appetizing of foods: different types of pork in weird sauces, very fishy smelling fish, dried meats. ... so I ate tortilla chips and salsa. There was also NO guests eating in the restaurant which was a little odd.
At this point, we both looked at one another, and kinda laid it out there: we were pretty disappointed in the hotel grounds, pool, and for sure the food. We sat by the 'lagoon' which had a strangely odd scent like raw sewage, and decided to go back to the room, relax, shower and try one of the only 3 a la carte restaurants later on.
We went to La Trattoria, I ordered Filet Migon with risotto, and soup. DH ordered seafood risotto. The result??? I am not sure what type of meat my so called filet mignon was, but it was paper thin, and tasted 'gamey'. My risotto was not creamy, but dry, and was scooped onto my plate with a perfect ice-cream scoop shape, along with instant mashed potatoes. 2 bites later and we were done. The bottle of wine eased our pain however.
We would be the only 2 people who go to an all inclusive for 9 days, and come back 10 lbs lighter, from NOT eating!!?
We went back to the hotel room, and we both finally admitted that we could not picture spending another 9 days here. DH called our travel agent, then American airlines, and got us on a flight home at 7am this morning. We got back here a few hours ago, and went straight to the travel agent who is now in the process of refunding our $4k.
I am sure many of you may have had good experiences here, but honestly, we were not thrilled at all. Your honeymoon should be the vacation of your lifetime, and this was mediocre at best.
I have learned to not take peoples word anymore about hotels or vacations, because we all have different ideas as to what 'great' is. What may be great to me, may not be great to you.
