OUR JULY 10, 2005 WEDDING REVIEW- VILLA LOMBARDI'S and HONEYMOON REVIEW (link to professional pics) VIDEO CLIPS BY PATKEN ON PAGE 4!!!!!!
Unfortunately I should not be posting this now. Since I should still be on my Honeymoon, but that is a long story in and of itself. I am not quite ready to go there, but am more than ready to post the details of my MAGICAL wedding day.Rehearsal Dinner- CP LaManno's, Miller Place, NY . . . . . 9.5 out of 10
Food was great, service was great! The manager that was running the dinner was so wonderful that when we forgot a camera to photograph the groom's cake, she ran out to buy us one! Only reason why a 10 was not given was that the seating was awkward- two long tables in an L shape joined by a circular table.
Groom's Cake- Create-a-cake, Port Jefferson Station . . . . 10 out of 10 for creativity; 5 out of 10 for taste
I gave Create-a-cake some ideas of what I wanted for the groom's cake just 3 days before the dinner. The cake came out fabulous (need to still scan pics) however the cake was cardboard-like and the vanilla mousse filling was too sweet.
**********THE WEDDING DAY ************
MOB, BM and BRIDE's Dresses-Paradise Bridal . . . . Liz, Ashley, Donna, Rosalie and Al 10 out of 10; Otherwise, 0 out of 10 I have absolutely nothing good to say about this place except for a thank you to those mentioned for making our miserable experience a little less miserable. Wrong dresses ordered that did not arrive until 3 days before the wedding, waiting for three hours for alterations that a two year old could have done better on my MOH's dress, stains, etc . . . . . The only positives were that some of my bridesmaids took the opportunity to have alterations done elsewhere and didn't have to deal with the BS. I highly recommend anyone who is thinking of getting their dresses there to maybe look at their selection, but order elsewhere. They are severely understaffed and do alterations the night before the girls are to come in for the fitting into that same day. I have seen approx. 50 different faces at different times, all complaining, angry and upset that the wedding is in just a few days and x, y, z are not done or wrong. This place made the three weeks leading to my wedding the most stressful and miserable time of the entire 3 year planning process.
Holiday Inn Express, Stony Brook . . . . 2 out of 10 We decided to make our lives less stressful and got ready at the three room bridal suite at this hotel. It was spacious and beautiful, however the toilet clogged after one use and the only way it could be fixed was by snaking it which they could not do because it would flood out the suite. We had to go up and down five floors whenever we needed to use the toilet.
Hair- Denise Venti . . . . not a number high enough!
I can't even begin to describe how fabulous and talented Denise is. Not only is she a hair artist, but an amazingly sweet and genuinely good person. I went to her for two trials- one up and one half up and half down. The day of the wedding I decided to go for the all up style since it was extremely hot. My up-do looked like a piece of art. She also did my mother's hair, which was just supposed to be a blow-out. After hearing how my mom wanted her hair for the wedding, Denise actually decided to achieve it she would need to reshape my mother's haircut. She cut my mom's hair to re-define here layers, blew it out, curled it and styled it and only charged her for a blow out. She also stayed after she was done with my mom to help us out with the toilet disaster and waited until my make-up was done to put my veil on for me. I am going to be making an appointment with her at the shop she works at to cut my hair. She will be my hair stylist from now on- so worth the trip from Port Jefferson Station to Baldwin.
Make-up- Jacqueline Nicole . . . . . . Above and Beyond a 10 I went for two different trials with Jacqueline because I changed my mind about the make-up look I wanted for the wedding. Both trials were amazing. I had the airbrush foundation and I swear I was flawlessly glowing the entire day. She was so careful to take time to monitor the intensity and actually worked with my photographer to determine the correct intensity for the pictures. When my dear day of coordinator (and now treasured friend) arrived, I was still getting my make-up done. She wanted me to eat something since I hadn't yet and Jacqueline waited for me to inhale part of a finger sandwich before finishing my make-up. What a sweetheart. She was always willing to take whatever time was necessary to make adjustments and discuss ideas. She also waited around to make sure everything as going okay.
Day of Coordinator- Laura of LA Productions and her assistant Jill . . . . infinity out of 10 I know that the ratings I am giving are extremely high, but I truly cannot place a number on many of the vendors I have used. Laura spent countless hours working with us to ensure that the wedding day went smoothly. Over the time we spent with her we have really grown to see her as a dear friend. From the day before when I was frantically e-mailing her every 15 minutes and as soon as she walked into the hotel when we were getting ready she took charge of everything that we needed her to and more. She kept everything together while still providing us with her warmth, laughter and enthusiasm. The same goes for Jill. I never would have been able to enjoy my wedding day without them there. Laura made everything happen- even if it looked like it might not happen she did it! There is nothing she didn't or wouldn't do for us to ensure we had not a worry and that our day was magical. My guests raved about her and my parents adored her and her energy and have not stopped saying how amazing she was. We adore her and can't find the words to express our gratitude for making our wedding day the fairytale we had dreamed of.
Flowers- Flower Michele (John). Huntington . . . . 100 out of 10 John is a floral magician. All of the flowers were more amazing than I could have ever imagined. I am actually impressed that the personal flowers held up as well as they did considering the weather was above 90 and dry. I thought that the flowers would be dead within an hour. They lasted through the severe heat and probably would have held up even better if they weren't so poorly handles by the girls. I have stopped counting the compliments I have received about the flowers for our wedding. The only sad part is that John is a wedding floral designer, so I will not have another opportunity to work with this amazing man and his incredible talent.
Limousines- Royalty Limousines, Franklin Square . . . . 6 out of 10
Drivers arrived early and were efficient, however relied heavily on passengers' directions to get around. Cars were poorly air conditioned especially on such a hot day. The head driver (our old fashioned car driver) started threatening 125 dollars overtime for each of the 3 limos to for photo's at my parent's house. He insisted that all of the limos had to stay together (my husband and I were the only ones to be photographed at my parent's house) even if they were not all needed at my parents. He was getting so obnoxious that all vendors present had to deal with him and basically tell him to shut-up. One of the drivers was an absolute doll and always went out of his way to make sure those following were behind him and knew where to go. Luckily with much efficiency and overworking on my photographer's part, we got to Villa Lombardi's on time without being charged overtime.
Photography and Video- Patken (Doug for Photo, Tim for Video) . . . . Can't attach a rating to perfection Doug, from the moment we met him has been so good to us. He has treated us like we have known him forever. From booking, to our Engagement shoot, to our wedding and even now, he has done nothing short of going out of his way for us. He is an amazing talent and a genius behind the camera. What he does with a camera is amazing to say the least. He works so fast and efficiently and does so with only snapping once per pose. In the heat of the day and the quick pace he was working at, he was always quick with his sense of humor that makes everyone so comfortable with the awkwardness of posing and holding and smiling, etc. that comes with being photographed. The smiles in the pictures are all natural because they are not achieved by being told to smile, but by Doug- the person that he is naturally bringing smiles to everyone's faces. Everyone in my BP, my parents- everyone photographed by Doug thought he was the greatest guy. He sat at a separate table alone at the reception editing the pictures he had already taken in between the time he spent popping around and photographing the reception. He even had Brian and I come over and view some of the pictures he had edited at a down point after dinner. Early the next morning I checked my e-mail to find a link on eventpix.com of all of our proofs. He captured our wedding day in a way that nobody could. My family still has not stopped raving about Doug's talent. I have tears of joy and recollection in my eyes as I look at the proofs that were ready in less than two weeks after the wedding, as does everyone that has viewed them so far. We can truly call Doug Gordon a friend that will be called upon to photograph the major events of our lives together as husband and wife in the future. Doug, thank you for capturing the magic of our wedding day, words cannot express the gratitude we have for you and your amazing talent.
UPDATED ON 2/12/06: VIDEO- TIM from PATKEN- A++++++10
Our video is absolutely amazing beyond words. The day was fully captured and the way the introduction and wrap up were done was unbelieveable. Anyone using Patken for Photo and Video will be thrilled beyond words!
Music- DJ Tommy's Tunes . . . . Another vendor above all vendors First let me say that Joe Erico is an MC above all MCs. He has touched my heart in a way that cannot be described. I don't know why or how but we just connected with so many of our vendors, especially Joe. What makes Joe special is that he becomes part of the reception. He enjoys interacting with the guests and making the crowd enjoy themselves. He danced with all of us, joked with all of us, cared for all of us. Joe brought our reception to life like I have never seen. Guests that don't dance were receptive to his invitations onto the dance floor. Joe is just fantastic. We had Gene Santini as the Frank Sinatra Impersonator at our wedding. This man is so incredible that my Stepmother-in-law was so pre-occupied that she never saw him and thought that those songs he sung were the originals being played by the DJ. Our percussionist was a fabulous last minute add-on. It truly brought a live music feel to the reception. It was not overbearing, it just added to the music. We got endless compliments on our DJ, our MC and the other members of the Tommy's Tunes clan. We actually had two family members that have future weddings planned tell us that they loved them and want them for their own weddings.
Reception- Villa Lombardi's -Holbrook, NY . . . . . Priceless with one exception Yes, they have rules and regulations, but they meticulously run their affairs to perfection. The food was delicious at the cocktail hour- more so than at the showcases. There was so much delicious food that of course everyone was full for dinner, but everyone made room anyway. The staff was so efficient and our maitre'd Nicole was a professional. Guests were actually getting a kick because the second someone got up even for just a second to get a drink, someone was there covering their hot food to ensure it did not get cold. As bride and groom we got anything we needed or wanted. We felt like a King and Queen. The Viennese hour was to die for, but here is my one rant. We were supposed to get everything left at the Viennese wrapped up to take home. Well there was so much left over and all of the 'good stuff' that was left never was given to us, just the deserts that were not as popular. We had seen things that were left that were not given to us, almost as though others were given first dibs (such as the workers, perhaps?) on what they wanted and we got what was left. Hmmmm . . . . My mom was very disappointed about this . . .
Okay, now for the Honeymoon . . . I will just post the letter we sent our travel agent as a formal statement for our travel insurance. We are truly heartbroken to say the least and it is still difficult for me to talk about without tears. We came home four days early from our 11 day honeymoon which really ended just after four days. Our travel agent was amazing and has really been a huge help and support. He really went out of his way to get us a great deal and is now in the process of working with our travel insurance to make sure we are re-imbursed. We will use Dave for future travel arrangements.
Honeymoon Travel Agent- Dave of In and Out Travel . . . . 10 out of 10 . . . .
Honeymoon- El Dorado Royale Spa Resort- Riviera Maya, Mexico . . . . Before Hurricane- 10 out of 10; After Hurricane- 0 out of 10
Hello Dave. Thank you for being such a wonderful travel agent to us in the planning of our honeymoon. You really were such a huge help and we definitely plan on having you as our travel agent for our future trips as husband and wife.
I thought you should know the details of our honeymoon from start to finish- they will be help for you as an agent as well as to us for getting back what we rightfully deserve.
We arrived at El Dorado Royale Spa Resort on Tuesday, July 12, 2005. Upon arrival, we entered the lobby for check in. The vision was breath taking- we immediately knew we were in paradise. We checked in and we were kindly escorted to our room by a bell boy via shuttle. He greeted us with such kindness and took us on a tour of the resort. We were speechless. Words could not describe the joy as we entered our SWIM-UP CASITA SUITE. Everything was just as promised. We went to a delicious gourmet dinner at d'italia and when we arrived back at our room, an envelope with all of our amenities was waiting for us. This letter promised us:
? Private romantic candle light dinner on the beach for the couple
? Chilled bottle of domestic champagne delivered to your room on arrival
? Tropical flower arrangement in your room
? Couples ½ hour massage lesson
? Guaranteed King-size bed
? Souvenir picture of the couple
? Romantically decorated Suite
? Special in room towel arrangement daily
? Bathrobes for use during stay
Same day reservations at the resort restaurants
complimentary shuttle service to Playa Del Carmen and Cancun upon reservation
DVD player
We were so excited. Our first days passed and we couldn't be more thrilled with resort we had picked for our honeymoon. We had made some great friends and spent our days drinking in our pool at the swim-up bar, laying out on the beach and (a couple of times in the Cabanas when we were up early enough- between 6 and 8 am- to save one for ourselves) going to a few delicious dinners followed by hanging out at Guacamayas Bar- we loved swinging on the swings at night and watching the live entertainment.
We are now at Saturday, July 16- just FOUR days into our ELEVEN day honeymoon. We started hearing word of bad weather and our candlelight dinner on the beach was scheduled that night. We were told that if it rained we would just be moved into LA ISLA, which is one of the restaurants on the resort. Well considering that we could eat at La Isla anytime by candlelight anyway, we decided that we would reschedule our dinner for another night once the weather cleared. Then memos started hitting the bars that Hurricane Emily was heading to Jamaica and that it MIGHT hit Mexico, but that they would keep us updated and to remain calm and that we would receive an advisory that night. Then our windows started being taped up, sand bags were being placed on the beach, trenches were being dug, and boards were being fixed to all glass of the main lobby, stores and restaurants. Furniture from all over the resort was being brought into storage. There was a government proposed alcohol ban now. We were watching news reports about Emily by then and were receiving mixed messages- CNN was saying that it was going to make landfall in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and that Cancun was being evacuated, yet the resort was telling us that it MIGHT hit and just to expect some rain and wind, that it was NO PROBLEM and NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. Well that night came still telling us that it had hit Jamaica and that it MIGHT- yes again MIGHT hit Mexico, but to remain calm. It told us that IN THE EVENT OF EVACUATION we were to remain calm, would be told to report to the main lobby with one carry on bag each with all valuables, a pillow for each of us, one blanket. We were to pack our luggage and place it in the bathroom. We were to report to the main lobby for a BRIEFING on Sunday Morning at 10 am.
Sunday morning- we order breakfast via room service and report to the lobby. We are told to come back at 1:30 with our carry ons, pillows, blankets just in case we had to evacuate, but would most likely just be sent back at that point for another briefing. This is where MY TEARS began, not to subside for days after. We return to our pool with plenty of time to spare. We are hanging out with our friends and a worker came around to tell us that we will not need to bring pillows or blankets, that they would be supplied to us if needed and to just bring our carry-ons. Fine. We go to our room to pack up our things thinking we were going to just be spending the night in the lobby which had been boarded up as a shelter. We head out via shuttle to our briefing at ONE-FIFTEEN for our ONE-THIRTY briefing and shuttles are already coming BACK from the ONE-THIRTY BRIEFING that took place EARLY and that only early arrivers got to hear telling us that we NEEDED to bring pillows and blankets and that we were EVACUATING TO CANCUN at 2:30 (which had already been evacuated) because the eye of the hurricane was making landfall in TULUM, only 45 minutes from our resort. We were driving by people that were heading to the main lobby uninformed letting them know to go back to their rooms to get their pillows and blankets and that we were going to be evacuated at 2:30. WE were telling people- not WORKERS-US. SO many people went over just to hear the briefing just to be told to go back to get their pillows and blankets that we were told not to bring.
Well we were brought to the Convention center in Cancun which was 'SAFER' than being at El Dorado. We set our things up on the floor and waited for 'lunch' which was to be served at 4:30 (and dinner was to be at 8:30) Lunch was distributed at SIX-THIRTY and was a warm soggy ham and cheese sandwich with mayonnaise and warm bottled water. While we watched our next door evacuees from a neighboring resort drinking cold sodas from coolers that had been brought over, we wondered what the night had in store for us. They then decided to conserve electricity and shut down the A/C. 8:30 dinner was served and was a very tiny scoop of warm mayonaissy pasta salad with a very tiny scoop of supposedly warm TUNA SALAD (I am allergic to tuna, so that was out for me and also a friend with seafood allergies as well as many others) and some crumbs of potato chips. We finally got cold soda which we were so thankful for, since we were sweaty, hot and just longing for a COLD drink. We were being briefed by one of the many workers there, however the one who spoke the WORST English. We never understood what he was saying, but between all of us somehow managed to piece it all together (also with the help of the ENGLISH speaking workers, who we will never understand why they weren't the one's giving the briefings.) We were informed that the hurricane would be hitting at 2:00 am. They started escorting people to the bathroom and to the phone in small groups, but that didn't work and they soon gave up. By that time we were being told by the 'BRIEFER' that spoke little English that no one was to leave anymore because we were going to watch a movie. At around 10 he finally realized that a group of roughly 550 people staying at an 18 and older resort were not all going to sit at one time to watch a movie and he started it. After watching the movie for an hour, I finally fell asleep from heat exhaustion. This was the most miserable night ever- or so I thought. We woke up the next morning and waited for the lights to go on.
Still without air-conditioning we were told that they were not sure when we would be leaving. They showed us footage from 2:00 am telling us that 'this is what it looks like outside and we should be thankful to be where we were.) Breakfast was served around 8:30 and we waited for more information that was due at 11:30. We finally found out that our resort was hit badly and that we were going to be sent to other hotels and resorts. I called my parents to let them know we were going to be re-located and I would let them know once we were there where we were. We were told that buses would be bringing us back to El Dorado, that we would be going back to our rooms to get our luggage, checking out and then would be given a new hotel and room number that we would be brought to. We waited around 3 hours and at 2:00 we were boarding a bus back to El Dorado Royale Spa Resort.
There was no shuttle service upon arrival so people were going back to rooms- Casitas over a mile away from the main building, to drag their luggage back to the main building in the pouring rain. There was NOBODY there guiding us through the motions, just the clerks at the check-out counter. After about 30 minutes, Brian made it back from the Casita in the pouring rain and found me standing on line waiting to check-out with a friend we had made. We got up to the front desk just to be told that if we were not flying our TODAY that we could not check out and had to wait for another BRIEFING at 3:30. Nobody would tell us ANYTHING until 3:30. We found our Concierge representative Carlotta and started asking her why we couldn't check out. It turned out that she was prepared to give us some information. There was NO ROOM left in CANCUN because neighboring resorts beat them to the punch and the neighboring resorts that they were considering sending us to were in worse condition than El Dorado Royale was. We were now going to be staying at El Dorado Royale in our rooms. The briefing confirmed this and also stated that there would be no cleaning of rooms until tomorrow. So people with flooded rooms would be sleeping in those flooded rooms. We lugged our luggage back in the rain half way until a shuttle came by and HESITANTLY agreed to bring us to our room. We walked in to find perfection except for some thatching from the roof at the entry ways on the floor. We had electric and A/C but no phone calls out of the hotel. We jumped in the shower thinking we had water, but really it was only what had been backed up in the system and the water was yellow. The toilet didn't flush. Within minutes, the A/C, electricity and what was left of water were all gone. We wandered over to the main building for dinner (to the only restaurant opened at the resort) to find out that they were working on all of this and that they were CONSERVING water and power. The only place that had running water, a/c and electricity was the main lobby. We had moments of electricity here and there - on and off it went. We went to sleep hoping it would not get any worse.
We had breakfast at the only restaurant open, dirty since there was still no water. We could not go to the bathroom in a healthy fashion since the toilets did not flush. In the main bathroom and public bathrooms, the workers were bringing in buckets of water to flush out the toilets with. There was one pool open which was filthy and had not been cleaned. We had no air conditioning and no phones. Lights were still on and off but mostly off. We were then thrown out of the Casitas that were being shut down and given a room in a villa that was moldy- moldy sink, moldy shower. We were told that even though we were honeymooners in a Swim-Up Casita, we would no longer be receiving the amenities that we were before. We had enough. I was crying and we were dirty, cut off from the outside with nothing to do but swim in a dirty pool. Our all-inclusive honeymoon with a top of the line room and many amenities, costing us 7,000 was destroyed. I just wanted to get out of this place. We went to the travel rep that had no phone. He was dealing with an older couple that wanted to be put up in another resort at no charge (they ended up having to pay another 1,000 to be moved) who had international on his cell phone. The travel rep set up a flight for us from this gentleman's phone. This man also let me call my parents who were going crazy trying to contact the hotel to find out if we were okay. The travel rep had also told us that he has no idea why we were moved from the lobby at El Dorado during the hurricane because that Convention center was 'NO WAYS NEAR SAFE' for us to be in during that storm, especially being on the third floor. All I thought was my life had been put in greater jeopardy by El Dorado Royale than the storm had put us in. We happened to enter the lobby to find a bit of a riot. A higher up was there addressing the people saying there was still a government ban on alcohol, but in three hours he would open some bars on the resort. He said that water was being rationed and would be on from 4 until 10, but there would still be no phone and no A/C. We went to hang out at the dirty pool (since our friend that was with us and was a head nurse said we would be ok as long as we didn't get water in our mouth, nose or ears) and drank a bit since suddenly we were allowed to drink even though the government still had a ban. We returned to our room at 4:00 to shower only to find there was no water. We were waiting for water and were talking to a couple that had gone into Cancun via taxi in the morning and had been drinking all day because Cancun's bars were all open and ready to serve. I guess that government ban business was just another lie that El Dorado Royale decided to impose upon their guests. People started confiscating bottled water to bathe in, leaving us with little to no bottled water to drink. A/C, we waited and waited for water but by 9:00 with only an hour left to eat dinner we went uncovered to eat dinner buffet style at one of 2 restaurants serving. The lights were off and it was hard to see what we were eating, but between occasional power surges we pretty much were able to serve our selves dinner. We came back to the room, still no water and I fell asleep. At 11:00pm I was woken up by my husband because the shower went on. We jumped in to take a shower in FREEZING COLD water, but we didn't care because we were clean. We still had no A/C, but at least we were clean.
The next morning came. We ate breakfast packed and went to check out. We were charged 88 dollars for the connections to the operator that we had made before the storm since our calling card never worked directly from the room and for internet service that we had used before the storm as well. They wouldn't even waive those charges for us after all that we had been through. We were so happy to be going home.
We loved the resort for the first four days that made up our eleven day honeymoon (we only had four days of what we paid for after all.) We already started talking about planning a return for our one year anniversary. Now we wouldn't go back any Karisma Hotel/Resort if someone paid us. We never got to go on any excursions, into Cozymel, Playa, Cancun. We never got to purchase souvenirs for ourselves or our loved ones. We never got any of the 'perks' that the hotel promised us as stated above in the amenities. Honeymoons only come once in a life time and ours was ruined. We can never get it back. We spent 7,000 dollars and all of our heart and soul into a honeymoon that was robbed from us, not only by Mother Nature, but by El Dorado Royale Spa resort themselves.
We hope you find this information useful in helping yourself, your business and of course us. We look forward to planning future trips elsewhere through you, Dave.
With great thanks and appreciation,
Brianne and Brian

Congrats! You looked beautiful and your pictures are perfect. I'm very happy you were happy with your flowers!!!As someone who has no patience and has both been evacuated and stuck in a shelter during a hurricane AND left stranded due to weather in a foreign country with no hotel and slept on the city streets for 2 nights, I really appreciate you honeymoon situation! IT really stinks that you spent all that money. But you did have part of your honeymoon and you'll have plenty of other vacations together. This may not be any consolation right not, but I was so mad/upset when those things happened...but now I have new memories and those are just crazy stories I tell. I hope the insurance compensates you!!!
