Our Wedding 10/27/06 - Glen Cove Mansion, Designs by Rose, High Voltage, Hair Genie & Oksana and many more....UPDATED - added some pics!

Our Wedding 10/27/06 @ the Glen Cove Mansion

Our wedding day was more wonderful than I could have even imagined. The day was surreal as I looked around to see how well everything was going, how beautiful everything was and how happy my husband was with all our plans. John & I had been together for a long time and I felt as tough this day was meant for us. I remember thinking throughout the course of the day “we are so blessed.”

I hate to do this…. But… Just a little advice for the brides-to-be… One, hold out for THE HALL. As you will read below I didn’t think it would happen but it did. You will find the place when you realize that you can picture your once in a lifetime day celebrating here! Two, hold out for THE DRESS. Believe me, this will set your mood for the day. If you feel beautiful in your dress, you will glow! Third, you will want a fancy hairstyle and fancy make-up. Just make sure you can see yourself in there… I went for a few trials and they weren’t quite right because I was having my hairstylist create styles that were not really me – just what I thought I should have done. Lastly, get yourself into shape. I worked out with a trainer about twice a week for three months before the wedding and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. I had read a few posts on this board about what brides regretted. The two main things were that they weren’t in as good a shape as they wished they were and their hairstyle wasn’t really them. I am not proud – I try to learn from other’s mistakes. I was very happy about how I looked on one of the most special days of my life. Don’t be that bride who regrets a hairstyle or those last stinkin’ five pounds. You will have a better day if you feel great about how you look. This is something you have control over!

Sorry I don’t have many pictures. Unfortunately I won’t have my proofs for at least another month. But I hope you find this review helpful. I didn’t post much before we got married but I have to admit I was an avid stalker. I can’t even imagine trying to plan a wedding without the wealth of knowledge and experience that past brides have shared. I will post proofs when available.

Please feel free to contact me directly should you have any particular questions. I would be happy to elaborate on my experience. Good Luck to the future brides. Enjoy your day.

Glen Cove Mansion
When looking for a RH, I would do the scouting and bring John back to a place that I liked. I looked at places in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and even Westchester. I was reluctant to go to Long Island as we have been to so many weddings over the years all out on Long Island. I wanted to find some place different – that I had not been to before. I also had to consider that I had a lot of out-of-town guests so the RH needed to be somewhat close to a hotel. After looking at quite a few gorgeous places I started to think that maybe a light wasn’t going to go off when I found “the place.” Then one day a friend of mine had remembered going to a wedding at the Harrison House (name prior to the GCM) and said it was beautiful. So I called to find out if it was in our price range, which it was, and made an appointment the next weekend to take a tour. I showed John the website and said “I think you should come out with me next weekend – I think this is going to be it.” He totally agreed and out we went. Needless to say, this place is gorgeous. The grounds are spectacular and the rooms that would be used were beautiful. Plus, they are a full service hotel and have a pub upstairs. After going on the tour and looking at the menu we told Carmella – “thanks, we will be in touch.” We walked calmly to the car, got inside, and both said at the same time “THAT’S THE PLACE.”

Before Wedding B-
We booked GCM with Carmella in March not knowing there was a recent change in management. About a month later I found out Carmella was gone and was replaced by John. John was awful – he forgot about an appointment we had made and didn’t return calls promptly. So it wasn’t a surprise when we found out John was gone. So after John we were onto Liz & her assistant Dawn. Dawn was nice at first then was totally unresponsive. Then she mysteriously disappeared so we moved along to Arlene. So as you can imagine I wasn’t feeling so great about the turnover in staff at this point – keep in mind that this was only over a 7 month time period! The only reason why I didn’t give a grade lower than a B- was because they seemed to keep very good records of all my questions/concerns/requests even though it was passed from person to person.

Day of Wedding A++
I was hoping that GCM would rise to the occasion on the day of my wedding – which they did and then some. I stayed at GCM the night before the wedding and got ready at the hotel. They had included a suite for the night of the wedding and charged us a fraction of the regular cost for the night before. The suite was huge! Plenty of space for me, my MOH, BM & Mom to have our hair & make-up done. Our bridal assistant was very sweet albeit a bit young – but I had a DOC so it wasn’t an issue. As soon as I came downstairs I was told by the Head Waiter/Maitre D’ Chris that the banquet manager Tom added two white chocolate fountains to our dessert offerings. We had already arranged for a milk chocolate – but now with a white chocolate fountain on each side it made a wonderful display. Tom had also arranged for an upgraded cake for us – which was absolutely spectacular. Chris and our bridal assistant were very very attentive. They were constantly checking to see what they could get for us/do for us. Mike in particular was fantastic. My guests are still talking about how great the food. One guest said it was the best cocktail hour food she had ever had. The wait staff really outdid themselves. Each guest was personally escorted to their table. The waiters were very nice and very attentive as well. The reception food was fantastic – even the presentation. Overall GCM was worth all the trouble that I had gone through prior to the wedding. My sister hosted an after-wedding party up at The Pub which was great. We only stayed for a little bit as we were exhausted! John met the groom for the next night’s wedding and warned him that he was the next victim!

Hair & Make-Up
Jen the Hair Genie & Oksana. A++
I set up a trial with both in April and booked them on the spot. They are super talented and easy to be around. I went back to Jen for a second trial a month before the weekend. They arrived early on my wedding day and came in with big smiles on their faces. They took care of mom, my BM & my MOH as well as myself. I threw Jen a curveball – I had a picture of a totally different hairstyle and she nailed it. Oksana changed my make-up a little to go better with the new hairstyle. They did a fantastic job, kept things going smoothly and were great to have around to keep things light & airy.

Veil & Headpiece
Barron’s @ Tri-County A++
I bought my headpiece for $50 and had a finger-tip length veil custom made for about $65. Both were gorgeous. But two weeks before the wedding at my final dress fitting I realized that I wanted a cathedral length veil. The one I tried on at the salon was $450. I wrestled with this as my finger tip length was very pretty and I knew I didn’t want to spend $450 on something I would wear for just part of the day. So I went back to my office and called Barron’s. They said that I would need to bring my original veil so they could tell me if it was possible to have in such a short amount of time. Well, I drove out that evening and they said they could do it for only $90! One fifth what the salon wanted! I picked it up a week later and it was gorgeous.

Dress
Wedding Atelier A
I went shopping only one day and went to two stores. The first store I went to was RK Bridal. This place has a huge inventory but it is not for the faint of heart. It is very “do it yourself.” You dig threw racks and pull out your own dresses and wait to be called for an empty dressing room which can take up to an hour. I tried on probably 8-9 dresses and was able to eliminate certain styles right away. That said, they carry a lot of different designers and their prices are great. My next stop was the Wedding Atelier. Just some background, I live in Queens and work in Manhattan as does my sister. When she got married a few years ago she bought her dress at Bridal Reflections in Carle Place. It became very tedious driving out to Carl Place during rush hour after work quite a few times. So I knew I wanted to find something in the city. I had looked online to get some ideas of designers I liked and then would look up where they were sold – and each one would come up at the Wedding Atelier. I went to their website and found they were having a sale the following week. Timing is everything. The store is small but very clean and very calm. They only have up to two appointments at a time. I tried on about 7-8 dresses. I had saved the one I ended up buying for last because I think I knew it was the one. Well, once I tried it on I was sold. I didn’t think it would hit me like it did – but it was clear that I was in love. This was THE DRESS. It is a Pronovias long lace sleeve, off the shoulder, A-line dress. Over the course of the engagement I had a love/hate relationship with the dress though – depending on the day. On the day of one of my last fittings I was very upset about something at work and thought – this isn’t the dress, I’ve made a mistake. My consultant very calmly talked me off a cliff. Thankfully, because I might have ended up buying another dress that day. I got a good price on the dress but think I paid too much for alterations. Oh well. The consultant and seamstress were great. They fixed a few things that bothered me. On my wedding day when I put the dress on I fell in love all over again. I received so many compliments on it. I absolutely felt like this dress was made for me to wear. I still open up the garment bag just to hug my dress LOL. Just some advice – hold out for THE DRESS. You will find it and it will be a big part of your day. If you look beautiful you will feel beautiful.

Shoes
Hazel’s House of Shoes A. I loved the shoes I bought (Renee Couture), they were a great price, they didn’t need to be dyed, and they didn’t hurt my feet at all.

Music
Soul Revival A
For the ceremony & cocktail hour music. I booked with Justin about six months before the wedding. He was easy to talk to, very knowledgeable and quick to respond to questions. For the ceremony we had a three piece jazz band. They were absolutely lovely. And for the cocktail hour we had a full five piece jazz band. DH and I both love New Orleans type jazz and they did a great job. I wasn’t brave enough to have a band play for the reception but I thought this would be a fun way to get the party rolling and it worked. Definitely set the tone for the evening. I would have given a better grade but honestly I was so busy during the cocktail hour I didn’t have a chance to pay more attention.

High Voltage (Vinny) A+++
For the reception we booked Vinny almost immediately after we met with him. We had only met with one other DJ. We liked Vinny – he’s nice, has a sense of humor, and does not pressure you into any extras. On the day of, Vinny was on time and had two helpers. I had given him a very short do not play list and an even shorter play list. He read the crowd and had everyone dancing all night long. We got so many compliments on our DJ – the night of, the next day, and ever since. Everyone loved loved loved the music. He absolutely made the night.

Photography
Twelfth Night (Dom & Jose) N/R until I receive proofs.
Dom was the only photographer we had met with and we booked him on the spot. He showed us some of his work and totally impressed us. He was also very easy going and easy to be around. Dom was on time, walked in with a smile on his face and a joke in his pocket. He kept me laughing all day long. Jose came later when the guys showed up. They staged the first time we saw each other and I am sure the pictures are going to come out great. I learned early in the day to just go with the flow – I got very use to being told where to go, how to stand, etc. I think once you get use to that the day goes much easier. Dom and Jose took tons and tons of pictures and thought of pictures I hadn’t thought of. They kept asking if there was anything else we wanted done. They also were very good when we would say “okay, enough.” A friend of mine had told me that I would hate my photographer by the end of the day – just because he/she will end up annoying you trying to get their job done. Well, I have to say it absolutely did not happen to me. I was sorry to see Dom go as I had spent most of the day with him. He was even helpful when I had to decide whether to have the ceremony outdoors or not. Dom is an absolute great guy. Period.

Videography
Mittermax (Andy & Randy) N/R until I receive DVD.
Dom from 12th Night suggested Travis at Mittermax as a videographer. Travis promptly sent me a demo and we knew right away he was our guy. He was easy to talk to and flexible with his packages. The day before the wedding he called with bad news. He wouldn’t be able to film our wedding due to a family emergency out of town. He told me that Andy would be able to do the job though. I was a little nervous for a second until he told me that Andy had filmed Dom’s wedding just a few weeks before. And for the last minute trouble he threw in a second videographer, Randy, for free. Randy & Andy arrived on time and worked really well with Dom & Jose. Again, these guys were funny and easy to be around. I don’t have any doubts the video will be fantastic.

DOC
Rosalie B-. I knew that I wanted a DOC – I wanted someone to handle all the little nonsense that comes up. I met with Rosalie and booked her on the spot after having read some wonderful reviews. I honestly didn’t hear from Rosalie until about two weeks before the wedding when I contacted her to go over all the details. At our final meeting I had told her that I had touched base with all of my vendors except the officiant and the cigar roller. I told her I had a concern about the cigar roller as I had originally told him to come at 9pm but then my hall suggested he come at 11pm. I had e-mailed him the time change and spoke with him but I was under the impression that he wasn’t really listening to me. Rosalie told me not to worry – that she would reconfirm all of my vendors. The day of the wedding she was over half of an hour late – something about a detour – whatever. This wasn’t a big deal as Jen & Oksana were already there and had organized us but it was that was stuck in the back of my mind. Rosalie had worked with Jen & Oksana in the past and I soon realized she was a little too comfortable with them. I was in the bedroom of the suite and was walking into the living room when I heard Rosalie telling them some story about a recent wedding where she had a run in with a photographer. She recanted in very explicit details the content of their argument – including some very very foul language. Now, I am not a prude but this was not the time or place (in front of my mother nonetheless) for this kind of language. Onto the rest of the day. Our ceremony was supposed to begin at 7pm. At 6:45pm I realized that the officiant was not there. I mentioned this to Rosalie and she told me that he was in the building. I felt as though she was handling me. I wasn’t freaking out about him not being there – I just didn’t want my guests going outside a minute before we were ready to begin. So I said, “If he were here he would be in this room.” So she went out to look for him and he eventually showed up. Rewind to earlier in the day when we left the suite - I had asked her if she needed the instructions for the bustle that the salon had supplied – she said “no, no… I know how to do all types of bustles.” Well, after the ceremony I was very anxious to go to the cocktail hour so I wanted to get bustled right away. Her and my bridal attendant took quite some time doing this and after my third complaint she informed me that there were some ties missing. This pi$$ed me off. I said “well, the bustle worked fine in the store last week.” Had she just taken the stupid instructions I would have been fine. Lastly, the cigar roller showed up at 9pm. It became quite clear that she hadn’t reconfirmed any of my vendors. She was nice enough and seemed to keep my bridal attendant busy. I gave her a B- because of the incidents mentioned above but my day did run smoothly so I have to give her credit for that. Overall, if I had to do it all over again, I would hire a DOC again – just not Rosalie. Right after our wedding there was a post from someone who fired her just before her wedding. Maybe she’s just stretched too thin as she does many weddings each weekend.

Officiant
Father Robert Allmen. N/R.
Father Bob had performed the wedding ceremony of a friend of mine so I booked him. He was fine. We never met with him. I only spoke to him twice on the phone. He got to GCM with only a few minutes to spare. But he did perform a very nice ceremony – with the exact religious tone we were looking for.

Cigar Roller
LaRosa Cuban Cigars A-
I arranged this as a surprise for DH and it was a big hit. Everyone loved it. We had personalized wrappers that had our names & the date. My only issue was that they were suppose to come at 11pm but showed up at 9pm. It wasn’t a big deal though and I actually think 11pm would have been kind of late – so all’s well that ends well.

Florist
Designs by Rose A+++++
This was my absolute favorite vendor hands down. I had read a lot of reviews online and made an appointment with Flower Michelle (I think I met with Mike). I figured I was going to walk in and book them immediately. One of Mike’s first questions was “what is your budget.” Fair enough. I told him I didn’t have a really strict budget and have no idea how much flowers cost so I don’t even know what is reasonable. Very quickly into the meeting I realized he was pushing his ideas on me without trying to find out what I liked/thought. After going through all the requirements he tallied up the damage and I was a bit shocked. The total was about a thousand more than I had in my head. I told him that I thought it was a little high and he looked at the list and said “well, I guess I can make the centerpieces smaller for $20 less.” Mind you that only reduces the bill by $260. I had read that they would work within any budget but I didn’t find this to be true – and I didn’t even have a strict budget! I thought they were pretty expensive. I left a bit depressed got home that day and had an e-mail from Designs by Rose suggesting a meeting if I was still looking for a florist. Timing is everything. I made an appointment with them later that week. Rose is the artist and her mother Doris is the businesswoman/den mother. I liked them both immediately. They showed me all kinds of pictures of weddings that had done to try to narrow done what interested me. Aside from the absolutely beautiful work, what impressed me was they referred to weddings by the bride’s name. They remembered exactly what they had done for whom and where the event was. I liked this. I wouldn’t just be another file. I had remembered everything that Mike had suggested (as he was familiar with GCM) and basically had them quote me for exactly what Mike would do and it came in over $1k less – exactly what I wanted to spend. This also included upgraded bouquets – with calla lilies where Flower Michelle would have done roses. Plus a few other extras. I also ordered my invitations through Doris. They were so patient with me going through the books, picking out the font and the color of the print. Unfortunately I didn’t order enough so I had to order more – and honestly I think Doris was more upset about the added expense than I was! At my final meeting they showed me a sample centerpiece. It blew me away. It was so beautiful it looked fake. During the meeting they told me that they actually had a wedding coming up at GCM the following week so I asked them to keep their eyes open for anything that we might be missing. I totally felt at ease with doing this – not for a second did I think they would try to sell me on something just to get more money out of me. I totally trusted them. I met with them again to go over their suggestions and they sounded great to me so we went with them. About a week before the wedding I had to drop a few things off and I was looking run down. Doris was so sweet – she told me I needed to go for a massage and take care of myself. The day of the wedding they were right on time. I was in the middle of getting ready when Rose & Doris personally brought the bouquets up to the suite. I took one look and just began to cry. They were absolutely stunning. Drop dead gorgeous. I couldn’t help but hug them both – they completely overwhelmed me with how caring the two of them are. Rose’s talent is unsurpassed. The centerpieces were fantastic – everyone raved about the flowers – and they lasted for close to two weeks! Rose also decorated an arch for the ceremony, the entrance hall, made a piece for the seating card table, made small pieces for the cocktail hour tables, you name it we had flowers on it. And each piece was more beautiful than the next. GCM is a beautiful mansion and the flowers just totally warmed the whole place up.

OOT Boxes A
I ordered the boxes from www.papersmart.com and put bottles of water, Advil, Tums, cereal bars, and mints in them – all, except the water, purchased on Amazon.

Chinese Slippers A
I ordered 70 pairs from www.mysisterusa.com. They were only $1 each and were shipped immediately. I know some brides/brides to be think they are cheesy – but honestly, our guests loved them.

Favors A
We gave a 4 piece box of Godiva chocolate with personalized ribbon to each guest. I ordered them over the phone with the Godiva store in the Queens Center Mall. I picked them up 2 days before the wedding and they were already to go and looked great.

Camelot Limos A
We only needed two cars – one to take John and his groomsmen to GCM and one to bring his family out and back from Queens. We had 12 people so figured a small bus – which they didn’t have but they did have, and we booked, a 20 seat Hummer. I have to say I thought it was funny yet nerve wracking watching 75 year old women climbing in and out of the Hummer. They were early for both pick ups and had very clean cars.

Bridesmaid Dresses Macy’s 34th Street B-
My sister had found a dress online that she liked and they carried it. We all work in the city so it was pretty convenient. The price was okay the cost of alterations was reasonable. They ordered the wrong size for my sister – it must have been two sizes too big – so this took a lot of alterations to fix. Everything turned out fine but not a great experience.

Tuxes - Flowerama in Glendale B+
Staff was kind of young but they have a nice selection and the prices were reasonable. When one of the groomsmen went to pick his tux up they didn’t have the right shirt. When John went to pick up his they had to make some last minute adjustments and send out from one of their other stores a different pair of shoes as the ones they reserved for him didn’t fit properly. Everything was straightened out and corrected a day before the wedding. No harm no foul.

Wedding Bands - Gary Weiss Inc. A++
I actually ordered my wedding band online. I had priced what I wanted at Fortunoff and found the exact same thing online for a third less the price. I had the ring appraised the day after I received it and the appraised value was $1k more than what we paid. We used my father’s wedding band for John.

Honeymoon – Hawaii
I never had any real strong desire to go to Hawaii but figured it would be a great place for a honeymoon. If I didn’t go for our honeymoon I figured I would never go. Well, I found out very quickly what all the fuss was about. Hawaii is absolutely beautiful. The topography is amazing. I have been to a lot of beautiful places but Hawaii blew them all away. You have to be warned that this place is expensive. We are use to NY prices but these were higher.

We spent the first few days on Oahu at the Marriott Ko Olina. We didn’t want to stay on Waikiki beach as we figured we wanted a few days to relax & unwind after the wedding. The Marriott was gorgeous. And the service was great. We rented a car with National – wouldn’t recommend them. The check in was a bit of a mess. After such a long flight you want to just get your car and go – but they had an annoying delay at the counter. Pearl Harbor is absolutely amazing. If you go – get there around 10:30am – all the tour buses get there between 7 – 9 am which is a bit hectic. We walked in @ 10:30 am and got tickets for 11am. Also, definitely check out the USS Missouri. They have a guided tour which is pretty cheap and really informative. I was totally impressed.

We spent the rest of our honeymoon on Maui at the Fairmont on Wailea Beach. One word for Maui – AMAZING! What an absolutely gorgeous island! I know this is going to sound weird but particularly Wailea Beach – the weather is fantastic. When we arrived on Maui it was pouring. When we picked up our car at Avis they said it wasn’t raining in Wailea – I thought the counter agent was just being nice – but she was right! There was only blue skies over Wailea Beach. We went to the Luau at Lahaina – which was great! About a 25 minute ride from our hotel. We went on a helicopter tour with Alex Air over the Road to Hana – honestly we were a bit too lazy for the full day’s drive. The helicopter tour was amazing! Definitely worth the money. We ate at a wonderful restaurant on both Oahu & Maui – called Roy’s. Me and DH love going out to great dinners and this place was fantastic! Food was amazing and service was great. When I got back to NY I found out there was a Roy’s in downtown Manhattan. I took my girlfriend there for her birthday and it was as great as the one’s in Hawaii. Definitely try the Short Ribs, Chocolate Molten Souffle & the Hawaiin Martinis. Yum Yum Yum. The Fairmont hotel was great. This is an all suite hotel. We totally splurged on a wonderful suite with a wraparound balcony that overlooked the three swimming pools – totally worth it! The hotel itself is a bit expensive but the service is wonderful. We took their “shuttle” (which was a Cadillac!) over to the Shops at Wailea which has a great breakfast place called Longhis. Also, very important, Nick’s Fishmarket at the hotel was absolutely amazing! The food is absolutely fantastic and the service was unsurpassed. Definitely check it out!
