The fabulous wedding of kimNanthony: Villa Lombardi's, Velvet Studio, *****, Royalty Limo and many many more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DH and I met through a mutual friend and started dating over 9 years ago. On Christmas Eve 2006, DH took me back to where he asked me out seven years earlier and proposed to me with flowers, candles, champagne, and our song playing in the background.

Engagement Ring- Nalleh Jewelry Tri County, Levittown – A+

I originally found Nalleh through a good friend who knows the owners. We started going there to purchase jewelry and they did great work and had beautiful pieces. I went with DH a while before we got engaged just to show him what I liked and he picked the perfect ring; a six prong round cut. I absolutely love my ring and everyone at Nalleh has always been friendly and helpful throughout the process.

LIW A+

I know this has been said a million times but my wedding would not have been the same without LIW. I am not a creative person at all and this website helped me with so many ideas for my wedding, including making my own programs and place cards which I would never have been able to do on my own. I am so grateful for all of the amazing girls that I have met on here that are always extremely helpful. It was so nice to have somewhere to come where everyone could relate to what you are going there and share in your excitements along the way.

Weather A+

DH and I picked a June wedding because we wanted our cocktail hour outside and wanted a nice day but nothing too hot. Starting two weeks before our wedding, the forecast said severe thunder storms. I checked everyday and the forecast got worse, saying that there would even be flight delays on our wedding day. I was so upset over the weather issue because Villa Lombardi’s has such beautiful grounds and the thought of not being able to take pictures outside was so upsetting. About two days before the wedding, the forecast completely changed and instead of raining on our wedding day, it poured the day before (which the forecast said was supposed to be the sunny day!) We wound up having the PERFECT weather on our wedding day. The sun was out, it was a warm day with a nice cool breeze. Lesson to future brides: DO NOT check the weather for your wedding day until a couple of days before because it probably won’t be right!

Save the Dates- A: A Giftful Heart

We purchased our save the dates from agiftfulheart.com. They were very easy to work with and great price and quality. I changed my mind a couple of times about what I wanted and they were always helpful.

Invitations- A+- Elegant Impressions www.impressionsbyamy.com

I found Amy through a friend from law school who used her for her invitations. I honestly cannot say enough good things about her. My friend’s invitations were so gorgeous and detailed and as soon as it came time to look for invitations I contacted her. She works out of her house in Brooklyn and is not only extremely talented but such a doll. She has a lot of samples but I am so picky and she helped me custom make invitations. I showed her an invitation that I saw online and fell in love with but was almost $30.00 per invitation. She worked with me to make them within my budget and even told me that it would be better for me to put the ribbon on myself because I could save a lot of money doing it myself. I absolutely loved my invitations and I would definitely recommend Amy. The trip to Brooklyn was well worth it!

Hair Piece- A+ Thomas Knoell

Finding a hair piece was the biggest obstacle for me during the entire wedding process. I am very simple and it seemed that every piece I saw had flowers or pearls which I didn’t want. I must have looked at every bridal store in Nassau County. I was extremely reluctant to go to Thomas Knoell because I knew how much his pieces cost and I wasn’t sure if I could spend the money on something I knew I would only wear once. A week before my wedding I still couldn’t find a headpiece I loved so I decided to go to Thomas Knoell since I knew I loved his pieces from seeing them online. I immediately fell in love with a hair clip which he custom made for me with all crystals a week before my wedding. He was so nice and is extremely talented, and even finished my piece earlier than we agreed on even though he only had a week. The only thing I can say is money well spent. I absolutely loved the way it came out and that he customized it for me so it only had crystals.

Bridesmaids Dresses- A The Bridal Garden

My girls purchased their dresses at the Bridal Garden in Bethpage. They quoted me the best price and well always very helpful when I went in, which was a lot since I had 10 bridesmaids! The girls dresses came out beautiful and fit very nicely. The only problem was that were was some confusion as they told me the alterations were capped and when it came time to do alterations they said that the cap only applied to certain alterations which I wasn’t aware of.

Gown- B Bridal Elegance

I had such a difficult time finding my dream dress. I tried on so many dresses and never got “the feeling” that all of the girls on here described when you knew you found the dress. I went to Moonlight Couture in Merrick and tried on a dress that I absolutely fell in love with and knew it was the one as soon as I put it on. The only problem was that it was completely out of my budget. I posted on LIW and a couple of girls told me to call Phyllis from Bridal Elegance. She would up getting me my dress for a lot cheaper than I was originally quoted at Moonlight Couture, and being that only three stores carried Enzoani, I ordered the dress though Phyllis.

Phyllis was always extremely helpful and I was very happy with the service, my dress, and my alterations, but there were a couple of problems with the ordering and alternation process. I ordered my dress approximately March or April 2007, and had more than enough time for it to come in. I was originally told that my dress would be in in October or November of 2007, which would have given me more than enough time. I called a number of times when I didn’t hear from her just to find out the status and kept getting the same response that it would be in within a week. At first it didn’t bother me because I knew I had so much time but when March came and it still wasn’t in I started to get a little nervous. I called numerous times and always got the run around and never a straight answer. My dress wound up coming in about a month before my wedding which was a big difference from the original time she told me of October or November.

When Phyllis was doing the alterations for my gown she suggested a special bustle for my dress which cost more money. She showed me all of the different options for the bustle for my gown and I really liked the one she recommended so I decided it was worth it. On the day of our wedding my bustle broke right after our first dance. All of the bands completely broke off. I was so upset because I spent a lot of money for the bustle and it broke at the beginning of the reception. Luckily my bridal attendant had some pins and made a bustle but it just wasn’t the same as the original one!

Veil- A- Bridal Elegance

I wanted a cathedral veil that had both a pearl and crystal lining. I actually wound up purchasing the first veil that I tried on.

Shoes- Simple Elegance- A

I found my shoes at Sandy’s Shoes but they were a little more than what I wanted to spend. I looked online and found them on this website for much cheaper.

Day of Jewelry- A

I purchased my earrings from Bridal Elegance which were swarvoski crystal. I purchased my bracelet from Nicole (futuremulligan) who was selling it on LIW.

When my dad passed away my mom gave me her engagement ring from my dad. It was sitting in my jewelry box and I had mentioned to DH a couple of times that I wanted to make it into a piece that I would wear. DH surprised me and as a wedding gift made the diamond into a necklace to wear the day of our wedding so my dad would be with us. It was so beautiful!

Garter- Ebay Seller finedesignsbyjd- A
I ordered my garter from ebay. It was also my something blue. The seller was great to deal with and I loved my garter.

Wedding Bands- A+ Nalleh Jewelry

We also purchased our wedding bands from Nalleh Jewelry. They helped me find my dream wedding band at a great price. DH and I couldn’t be happier with our rings!

Dance Lessons- John from Ballroom Dance Long Island- A

I always wanted to do a choreographed dance with DH for our first dance. Out of all of the weddings we have been to for some reason I always pay more attention to the first dance and I never wanted to just rock back and forth for our first dance. This was something that was very important to me and DH was such a trooper. John was such a great teacher and was very patient with us. We actually had such a good time at our lessons and if money weren’t an issue we definitely would have continued after our wedding. John taught us a great routine for our song and we created so many wonderful memories during our lessons and had a great time along the way. If anyone is thinking about doing a choreographed dance I would definitely recommend him!

Tuxedos- B+

I let DH grade this one since I didn’t really have much to do with the tuxedos. I went in with DH and met with Mike to pick out the tuxedos. He was very nice and helpful and the tuxedos were great. The only problem was that DH and a couple of groomsmen said that they had stains on their shirts and when DH tried to tell Mike about it after he wasn’t accommodating at all. DH’s stain was on the front of his tuxedo shirt and we had to twist it a little so it wouldn’t show in the pictures.

Bouquet Charm- A Annie Howes Keepsakes

I ordered my bouquet charm from Annie, who I heard about on LIW. It took me a couple of weeks to email her the picture I wanted and she was very nice and helpful.

Hair & Makeup- M I A B R I D A L L O U N G E - A+

I honestly cannot say enough good things about *****. I know there were a couple of bad reviews about her but I saw pictures of her trials and absolutely loved her work so figured I would take the chance and go for a trial with her.

For my first trial I got both hair and makeup done. She was so nice and talented and tried so many different styles with me. I loved my makeup but was so indecisive about how I wanted to wear my hair so I went back for a second trial for just hair. Again, she spent hours with me and tried SO many different styles with me. I even stopped in her salon after I purchased a hair clip and she helped me decide which hair style would go best with the clip I purchased.

On the day of the wedding, ***** was early and was at my house before I even woke up! By the time I woke up she and her assistant were already all set up and were doing my BM hair. They were both so nice and we had a great time talking and she kept me so relaxed that morning! Her assistant was also amazing and did such a great job on my MOH and some of my BM’s. They were very professional, punctual, and TALENTED! I understand that everybody has their own experiences and personally I couldn’t have been happier with my decision to use her. I still get so many compliments on how my hair and makeup came out.

Band- A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Continentals Orchestra

Although we had so many amazing vendors, the band was definitely our favorite. We heard this band at one of friends weddings before we even got engaged. I knew I really wanted a band at our wedding but wasn’t sure if we could afford one. We met with Moshe who is the leader of the band who is based out of Rockland County. We had already heard them live and we knew they were amazing so it was really just a matter of discussing price. DH’s family are Italian and we had some guests at our wedding who did not speak English. It was really important to me to try to make everybody feel comfortable at the wedding and to play some Italian music as well as American. This band not only sings Italian, but in many other languages.

We kept adding band members and wound up with a 9 piece band! Moshe surprised me and played the piano at our cocktail hour for free and added a violist for free. They are all so extremely talented. We even added another singer who specializes in more rock songs so that we could play some of our favorite songs at the wedding. I cannot even explain to you how many compliments we got on how good the band was. They had everybody dancing all night which is the most important thing to us at the wedding (besides the food!) We had such a great variety of music at the wedding. The Italian music really made the party and the non Italians loved it just as much!

Flowers- A+ Burtons

I have read mixed reviews about Burtons on LIW. Being that I wanted all calla lilies for my wedding and Burtons charges based on quantity and not the type of flower (unlike most other florists), I was saving a ton of money with them and liked their work so decided to book with them. They were definitely one of my favorite vendors. When I met with John I told him I wanted white flowers and he suggested that I get a champagne color because the white flowers blend in with the wedding dress. I was so happy he told me this because I went with champagne roses and white callas and I loved my bouquet. It was perfect. My BM carried calla lilies and my centerpieces were more beautiful than I even imagined. I would definitely recommend Burtons as they have great prices and they really came through with more than I could have asked for!

Church- A St. Kilian Farmingdale

DH is Catholic and I am Lutheran. We knew we wanted to get married in a church but as far at the type it wasn’t as important. For years I have always driven past St. Kilians in Farmingdale and just fell in love with it and said that I would get married there. The church is so beautiful you just can’t describe it in words. We had a great experience with Pre Cana and loved the father who married us. The most magical moment for me was when we met with the organist to pick out songs. I wasn’t sure what song I wanted to walk down the aisle to and the organist was so helpful and played all of the songs for us. The church has special pipes so it was so magical to sit there and listen to these beautiful songs and think in a couple of days I will be walking down the aisle to this.

We had Deacon George who gave us such a beautiful ceremony. We met with him a couple of times and he was very laid back. We really wanted to write our own vows and he allowed us to, although they had to be approved first! I feel like DH and I really connected with him and he really understood my relationship with DH and how long we had waited for this day to come. His sermon was so special and touching and the fact that he let us write our own vows made our ceremony so much more personalized and special to both us and our guests.

Villa Lombardi’s- C

It is really hard for me to give Villa Lombardi’s such a bad grade but there were so many things we weren’t happy with both before and at our wedding. I want to be honest for future brides so hopefully they can make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to them and they don’t have the same stress I had the day of their wedding.

Being that I am very picky and simple, I had a really difficult time finding a reception hall. We went to so many and it took a long time to find one that I felt fit our style. Also, DH family has had functions at a lot of reception halls and we wanted to find one where no one in his family had a party. MIL had been to a wedding at Villa Lombardi’s a couple of years before and took us to go see it. I still remember the feeling of when we walked around it. DH grabbed my hand and just gave me the “this is the one” look, and I felt the same way. We booked the same night we went there and really felt like it was the perfect place for us.

A couple of weeks before the wedding, we visited Villa Lombardi’s to finalize everything and pick the menu. At our meeting two weeks before the wedding, I found out that they switched our reception room without ever informing us. When we first saw the RH we looked at one room which was the room we booked for our wedding. It turns out that they booked another party for our original room (which was bigger than the other one) and put us in a different room without telling me. When I told them that I was very upset about this as my wedding was in 2 weeks and I never saw the room my wedding would be in, they told me that there was a party in that room that day but they could show me the room on a DVD! I was so angry that not only did they change our room without informing me, but that I would only be able to see the room my wedding would be in on a DVD. I asked if I could come back to see it and they said it was booked the next weekend too. I told Nicole, who helped us that day, that there was no way I was having my wedding in the room without being able to see it first. I finally convinced her to let me come back on a weeknight and I had to drive all of the way out to Holbrook after work one night during the week just to see the room.

Another issue we had was with our cake. When we originally booked, they told us that the cake was included. When we went to look through the book of cakes, there was only 3 or 4 cakes to choose from and everything else you had to pay to upgrade. I told Nicole that when we booked we weren’t informed that we could only choose from 3 cakes, which were all ugly! To upgrade they wanted $400.00! Combined with my issue of them switching my room I was not happy and got Nicole to agree to upgrade my cake for free, which was NOT an easy battle. We wound up having a beautiful cake but it was a battle to get there.

DH and I felt like as soon as we made our final payment they were extremely rude to us and made us feel insignificant. At first I was told they switched the room because they booked a bigger party (which means more money!) A couple of days later Nicole swore to me that I always had the other room and they didn’t switch it, which I know was not the truth.

The day of the wedding was another disaster as many things went wrong. Villa Lombardi’s has a beautiful cocktail hour outdoor space, which is one of the reasons we booked there. We had a gorgeous day and were so excited to use the outside area. When we got to the cocktail hour, I saw that the doors leading to the outside area from the cocktail room were closed. I asked the BM why the doors were closed and told me that I wanted my guests to have the option of going outside. I asked her numerous times to open the doors. By the time I saw her again there was only 10 minutes left in the cocktail hour and the doors were still closed. She told me that they couldn’t keep the doors open because of the air conditioning. Where she went for that hour that she couldn’t tell me that before I don’t know but I had to ask members of my bridal party to go outside so my guests would see they could go out there. A bunch of people wound up following them outside but the cocktail hour was already almost over.

Another problem we had was with the table numbers. I told Nicole when we dropped everything off that I did not want to use their table numbers as I had my own to hang from my centerpieces. I explained everything to her about what had to be done and she told me to leave them with her and that they would put them on my flowers for me the day of. Luckily my MIL was at that meeting with me and knew what that they were supposed to hang from the centerpiece because when she went into the room before the wedding started they had them flat on the table so you couldn’t even see them, and they had their table numbers on the table also after I told them I didn’t want to use them. I had a white and crystal these and my table numbers were swarvoski crystal and went with the theme. Luckily my MIL saw the problem and fixed it before the reception (although their table numbers were left on the table which really annoyed me)!

The biggest problem we had was with our menu. We chose our menu with Nicole and specifically chose an Italian chicken dish that we knew a lot of our guests would like. We had personalized menus which I did not even have a chance to look at. When they came to ask us what we wanted to eat they said the options and DH and I looked at each other and told the lady that’s not what we chose for the menu! I was so upset that they messed up the menu and put a different chicken (which we had at cocktail hour) than the one we wanted. I told the BM the problem and told her this had to be fixed as we specifically chose the other one because we knew a lot of the guests would like it. She told me that they would remedy this problem and offer all of the guests an additional option of the chicken we originally wanted. However, I later found out after asking many many guests that they never went back around like they promised they would.

It kills me to give them such a bad grade because the place is beautiful and the food was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO amazing. Everybody is still talking about the food from the cocktail hour and the dinner. My BM was also amazing and helped me when my bustle broke and always made sure we had what we needed.

Photography - Velvet Studios (Day of B-, Everything else A)

I feel like in order to give an accurate grade I have to split up the wedding day from all of my other experience with Velvet.

I let DH grade Velvet since I also had a difficult time coming up with a grade for them. When we booked with Velvet, I was told by Bob that he had another wedding the same day as mine but during the day and they he would send a different photographer to my house to take pictures of getting ready but he would be at the church and reception. I booked him based on this representation as I really liked his work.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks before our wedding when I called Bob to discuss details with him and he tells me that he wont be able to get to the church until after the ceremony. I told him that when he discussed this he told me he would be at church on time and he claimed he never promised this, which he definitely did. The day of the wedding he didn’t even wind up showing up until the reception and at that point all of the important pictures were already done. He came to check in and left a couple of minutes later.

I cant remember the name of my main photographer (I think Jerry) but I would up booking a photojournalist photographer Carolina also. She was such a doll and I think took most of the pictures that I would up loving!

At the RH we took our group photos and the photographer told me that we would take the family pictures at the end of cocktail hour, which sounded like a great idea. Well that never happened and about a half hour into the reception, the photographer decided he wanted to take all of the family pictures and came over to me while I was on the dance floor and told me to get my family together in the foyer. I don’t understand how he expected me to organize everything but it was extremely stressful and unorganized. I told him that I wasn’t going to go up to everybody because it would take forever, so he asked the band singer to announce it on the microphone. The band leader then got upset because he just got the party started and now they wanted to take everyone outside to take family pictures. Basically the entire thing was a waste of time because half of the people were missing from the pictures and the entire thing was a disaster.

DH also told the photographer that he really wanted pictures of us on the staircase of Villa Lombardi’s, which they never took. When they came up to us to tell us that they were leaving I had to remind them about the picture DH asked for (who doesn’t ask for much!) They took the picture but it came out horrible as it was rushed and DH was very upset about it.

We received our proofs and there were so many amazing pictures. They didn’t edit any of the pictures and we had to request that the ones we picked for the album be edited. DH even had to point out to them what he wanted done with them. We received our album layout much later than promised and I had to contact them a bunch of times to follow up. We are both very happy with the way the album came out. Here are our proofs:

Videographer: Velvet Studios

We were promised our video on December 18 and received it in February. I absolutely LOVE the video. The only issue is that in the beginning of the video it is very shaky for the first minute or so. I am waiting to hear back from them about anything they can do for me.

Limousines – Royalty Limousine- A+

We booked three different cars, which DH was in charge of picking. We got an old car for us, a hummer limo for the bridal party, and a stretch limo for the parents and his grandparents. Royalty did a great job at the wedding. Their cars are immaculate and they were early the day of the wedding. The Southern State was closed on our wedding day and they still got me there on time.

We also used them for my bachelorette party and got a good discount!

Table Numbers- Bombay

Thanks to Tiki (AS) I found Swarvoski crystal letters which matched my theme of white and crystal. Bombay was closing at the time so I had to go to a bunch of different stores but I found enough for the amount of tables I needed.

DIY A+

I have to say I did a great job because I am not a crafty person at all and I definitely surprised myself!

-Wedding Rice – Exclusively Weddings

Our church wouldn’t allow us to throw anything but bubbles. My dress was silk and I was really worried about staining my dress so I asked the deacon if we could use rice if we used a special kind that is environmental friendly, and he agreed. I ordered it online and also purchased bags to put it into. The rice was so cute it was shaped in hearts.

-Programs

I purchased the paper for the programs from Michaels and it came with a program to make your own programs. It was a little difficult since we had twenty two people to fit into the program for our bridal party! I was really happy with how them came out. I also had a poem for my dad on the back of the programs which was very special.

- Place Cards
I purchased these placecards from Staples and they were so easy to make. To go with my crystal and white theme wedding I glued a swarvoski crystal onto the center of each place card and they were beautiful!

Favors

For our favors we gave two small bottles of wine (one white, one red), and two wine glasses that we ordered at Fortunoff. My MIL went to Italy a couple of months before the wedding and picked up the almonds for the top of the favors. They were so pretty and were shaped like a flower and had calla lilies on them, along with our name.

Bridal Party Gifts

For the GM we purchased pocket knives from Things Remembered and got their initials engraved.

For our flower girls I got them jewelry boxes from Things Remembered with their names engraved, a necklace for each of them, and a tote from Fortunoff that said Flower Girl.

For our young ring bearer we got a truck bank from Things Remembers with his name engraved and for our older ring bearer we got a baseball clock.

I got all of my bridesmaids a coach wristlet.

Travel Tom A+

I cannot say enough good things about Tom. I heard about him through LIW and emailed him to book our honeymoon. He also returned my telephone calls and emails, and even spoke on the phone with me late at night due to my work schedule. He even wanted to include DH in the plans and specifically requested that we all talk on the phone together so DH felt like he was part of the planning process. We first booked our honeymoon to Hawaii and wound up changing it to Mexico and Tom was so patient and helpful during the entire process. I even recommended Tom to my brother who booked his honeymoon with him also.

Honeymoon- Excellence Rivera Maya, Mexico – A+

Travel Tom recommended the Excellence Resort to me during our first conversation for our honeymoon. I told Tom that we wanted to go to Hawaii so he helped us make all of the arrangements and we booked our Hawaii honeymoon. After a couple of months DH and I started discussing our honeymoon plans and realized that we wanted something that didn’t require as much moving around as Hawaii would. I contacted Tom and we discussed more options and again he recommended the Excellence Resort. It seemed like it offered everything we were looking for and we were getting “more bang for our buck,” as Tom said. I was choosing between the Occidental in Aruba and this resort and Tom helped me decide by telling me that it Excellence was by far the way to go.

DH and I had the honeymoon of our dreams. We pulled up the resort and were greeted with champagne and hot towels. We upgraded and booked the Excellence Club, which was definitely worth it, especially for your honeymoon. With the Excellence Club we got a private pool and beach, and a Jacuzzi on our private balcony which overlooked the ocean. The view from our room was so incredible.

When we upgraded to the Excellence Club we were also offered a free honeymoon package, which included fresh fruit in our room upon arrival, a couples massage on the beach, a private dinner on the beach with a harp player, a treatment at the spa before the massage, and a makeup of our room with a bath and rose pedals.

All I can say is that during our stay at the Excellence Resort we were treated like royalty. The service at the resort is beyond amazing. We ordered room service a lot, especially for breakfast. They have so many different restaurants, which are all included and do not require reservations. I am extremely picky eater and normally don’t eat at all inclusive resorts, but the food here was AMAZING! One restaurant was better than the rest! They also had many different pools and the resort was beyond gorgeous. The beach was also amazing although I though that the Excellence Club beach had less seaweed and was better maintained than the other beach.

As far as activities, we did a shopping trip to Cancun, the Jungle Tour which was also in Cancun, and swimming with the dolphins. I personally wouldn’t recommend the shopping trip. The only good thing about it was that you get to see some of Cancun and they stop at Dolphin Beach which has the bluest water I have ever seen. The rest of it is just shopping in malls and I would have rather been at the pool or the beach. The Jungle Tour was good but only if you are an adventurous person. I was very scared because the waves were huge and the tour leaders didn’t really wait for us and we almost lost our group in the middle of the ocean a couple of times. I definitely recommend the swimming with the dolphins. We had the best time there! It got to hug and kiss the dolphins and then they pulled us through the water. Definitely the experience of a lifetime!

Overall, I would DEFINITELY recommend this resort for a honeymoon. It is adults only which was very nice not having to deal with kids on the honeymoon. The resort is beautiful, the food and drinks are amazing, and the service was impeccable. My brother wound up going to the same resort for his honeymoon in September because of how much we raved about it when we got home and they LOVED it.

great review, you looked beautiful. Sorry to hear about your experience with Villa Lombardi's. Both my and my family have had similiar experiences with them w/ catering in the restaurant. I just dont think they are very mindful when it comes to customers across the board, and it's a shame.

Congrats! I'm a villa bride too, and while many of your complaints aren't relevant to my own affair (i actually wanted the small room, winter wedding so outside CH is a no go anyways, choosing a standard cake and using standard menus, etc.), it's good to hear all sides of the story.
