Updated w/ Professional Pics!!! 4-27-08 Wedding Review: Royalton, Verbena Designs, FM Entertainment, Bluedaisy, Wellspun and lots of DIYs and more...

Yes it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!

People are still talking about it!!!!

I want to thank everyone on liweddings.com for all your support. I seriously found most of my vendors on this website!! It was definitely a great source of information and most of all 'support!.' Thank you all for being there during this important time in my life....sorry I'm still trying to figure out how to post pictures but here are the first draft of reviews:

David S. Diamonds:
Rating: A

My hubby and I had visited places like Tiffany/Harry Winston, Fortunoff, Mike C. Fina, etc, to get ideas on what kind of rings I liked. It always came down to the band and setting. I would like the band but not like the setting and vice versa....I was never 100% happy with anything that I saw premade in the store. I knew I didn't want just a solataire, but side diamonds, whether it be channel setting or tapered sidestones....I just wasn't sure which was the best one for me.

Also before you decide on a ring, never go by a picture and never go by how it looks on a friend. What looks good on them may not look good on you. I thought I wanted a princess shaped diamond, but then realized it didn't look good on my hand. Then I was set on Tiffany Novo style ring for the longest time, but when I tried it on the 2nd time, I didn't like the band so much.

When my hubby proposed to me on my bday, he actually didn't propose with a ring! I was disappointed at first, but then in retrospect it was the best decision he could've made. Despite me being a pain in the butt to deal with for a few days, the idea of designing my own ring really perked me up. We decided to go visit David S. after seeing a ring that he made for friend's fiance. It was GORGEOUS. Her band was what caught me. I really wanted a 'thin' band with micopave. I couldn't find a band as thin as that anywhere else.

When we went to see David S, it was sooooo fun designing my band. I chose a basket setting with a round diamond and micropave 75% around the band. When I finally got it, it was seriously the most beautiful ring I've ever seen!! I love it and wear it everyday. Also his diamonds are high quality...his place is located near the diamond district but it's not in a shady store or anything. It's in a nice building with security. It's actually a really nice store...but you can only go there if you know someone, so if you are interested, please FM me..

We went back to get my wedding band made there as well to match my ring...

Bridesmaids dresses @www. bluefly.com:
Rating: A+

These were my first wedding purchases. I got these the week I got engaged! I was looking around bluefly.com and noticed these pretty dresses. I didn’t want a flowy springy dress because I was getting married in the spring. These dresses did the trick. I didn’t have many issues purchasing because I only had two bridesmaids. They were only $99 each!!! It had a lace overlay and mocha/brown lining and a pretty sash. The only thing was the V-Neck was a bit too plunging so my mom helped sew both the girl’s dresses a little higher so it was more suitable for a g-rated wedding. Hehe.

I had initially brought one for myself but realized that I wasn’t realistically going to wear it. Besides I can always borrow from one of them! Return policy was easy.

Wedding colors/Theme:

I didn’t even have any wedding colors but after I brought my bridesmaid dresses, it occurred to me that I love rosy pink and brown so I added off-white and those were the colors I worked with throughout the wedding.

Theme-wise, I loved CHERRY Blossoms, so I used that as an idea point throughout.
Once I post all my pictures, you can see that I incorporated Cherry Blossoms as my centerpieces and also used a lot of rosy pink ribbons throughout the wedding.

Photography: www.Bluedaisyweddings.com
Rating: Before Wedding A+
After Wedding A+ Proofs are amazing!!

2nd Photographer: Agaimages
Rating: A+

I looked LONG and HARD before I decided on Mariann from Bluedaisy! Photography was very important to me. I had met a lot of photographers and was even tempted to go with some of those Flushing ones that had amazing packages for these great deals but then I realized that I rather spend more on Photography and not splurge somewhere else. Mariann had an eye to detail and her ability to capture color amazed me. Also everyone on her site looked so glamorous and what couple doesn’t want to look that way on their wedding day? She had a photojournalistic style that makes all your poses very natural. I also had a 2nd photographer for the day of, named Aga. You should look her up. She is amazing as well!

MC/DJ: FM Entertainment
Rating: A+

Since I’m Taiwanese, I initially wanted a Chinese MC. I had kept this MC’s card for years. But when I met with him, he turned me off. He kept saying we had to pay more to guarantee that he works at our wedding day. Also he kept asking ‘Do you have cute girls at your wedding? If so then I’ll MC.” I was so turned off. He even said to us, “Your wedding is any other wedding to us.” Even if he was being honest, I didn’t want to hear that.

I wasn’t too impressed with the other Asian MC that I met with either. It didn’t seem like they cared about us.

So after searching long and hard on liweddings I found FM Entertainment. My hubby and I booked a showcase with them to see them at work. We really liked Frank and Justin as DJ. The only thing was initially Frank had another earlier wedding before our wedding. So we didn’t put down a deposit right away because they said we can come back to another showcase with his other MC’s. So when we went back, we were impressed because they literally set up the showcase just for us! The other MC’s were good but we still liked Frank the best. So after some thinking, Frank said that he can definitely make our wedding, we booked him and Justin.

During the wedding, Justin didn’t show up, which I didn’t even notice until the very end, but the person DJ’ing did a decent job. I think they played some random songs that we didn’t request, but it was fine because as long as ppl were dancing, that’s what mattered to us.

Frank was really great. He got everyone up and the thing I liked about him the most is that he is NOT cheesy. He is professional and smooth. He incorporated all the elements we asked him to. We had given away prizes in a raffle and dance contest. Also he had the DJ play all the Chinese music we requested for our parents and friends. I was very happy with how everything turned out. Our guests said our wedding was fun and that was what mattered to me.

Invites: Wedding Center
Rating: BIG FAT F---------------

I had written posts in the past but long story short. I was not happy with my experience here. Long story short, I did not approve the 1st proof of my invitations, but the wedding center sent it to the printer saying “I had approved it.” I never sent an email or fax confirmation. There was no documentation. After that experience, I didn’t want to work with them anymore. Their boss is horrible. Just bad taste in my mouth. I had actually gone there before I discovered liweddings.com. If I had only read the reviews I never would've stepped foot in here.

Invites: www.whiteaisle.com
Rating: A

Frustrated with my invites, I decided to go online. Rebecca from whiteaisle is great. I had no problems getting my invites done online. The only reason I gave her an A not A+ is because (no joke) the week of the wedding I realized there was a typo! I know it’s not her fault that she didn’t catch it, and I know I should’ve as well.

Invites: www.chinabridal.com
Rating: A-

In order to send some invites to our relatives in Taiwan and non-English reading guests, I found some cute invites on chinabridal. The only difficulty was trying to get a proof down. Thank goodness my mom was very patient in working with the lady at chinabridal. In the end I was happy with the product, but didn’t like the color paper they printed on. It was like an orangey pink, and I hate orangey pink. So my hubby and I made use of the many stamps we purchased and stamped these cute designs on them and it made a world a difference.

Some of the invites were not so crisp when they arrived which affected their rating. Looking back, it was a bit frustrating for my mom to work with them because of the fact that it was in Mandarin and also the store was located in California. With bilingual invites, it's best to work with someone in person so you can pinpoint any changes and edits.

But the price was good and we got dual usage out of them. We got double-uses of these invites because I also used these invites for the rehearsal dinner. Since our rehearsal dinner was at a restaurant in Flushing, it was a cute counterpart. I just printed invite details and directions and slid them in the invite.

Wedding Dress: Bridal Elegance
Rating: B+

I found good ratings for Phyllis at Bridal Elegance so I emailed her and said that I wanted her to give me her best price for a Marisa dress that I found. She met me halfway in price. I requested extra beading and changes in the neckline. I also bought my veil here. It was fingertip length with crystal trim throughout the edging to match my dress. I loved my dress. I knew I wanted a soft chiffony style dress. I didn’t look so good in satin or other fabrics. It felt comfortable and light and airy.

The only nerve wracking thing was that I had wanted the dress slightly longer in the front and when it was altered it was shorter than I liked. She kept saying I would trip on the gown but I don’t like to see my feet at all. But what to do? I think maybe they ironed it to get it slightly longer.

My final fitting, I felt that they hemmed my skirt too short and I wanted the chiffon overlay to be longer than the inner fabric. When I came back it was hemmed so unevenly and definitely unacceptable. Phyllis sent it back, but I felt that it never should've happened. Besides that, I had no issues. Everything came out the way I wanted it to.

Chinese Dress: Eastern Helen in Flushing Mall
Rating: A
I initially wanted to wear my mother's old chipao, but due to age, there was some yellowing on the material. I searched high and low to find a material similar to hears and finally found it in the fashion district. II wanted a more plainer material instead of the usual dragons/blossoms. I know brides usually wear red but I wanted to wear pink because it fit the theme of the wedding and also I prefer pink to bright red.

Helen was great. She takes your measurements and then has your fabrics sent to China to be custom made. The timing was great and got the dress back in time. I had about 2 fittings before it was perfect. I recommend her..her pricing is pretty good. The only thing is coordinating the time with her tailor. One time we trekked to Flushing for a fitting only to discover there was no one there to help us. But besides that I have no complaints.

Shoes: Lord&Taylor.com
Rating: A+

Found strappy gold pretty Capparros shoes at Lord & Taylor online. No problems. It was about $70. It was a bit uncomfortable at the end of the night, but no problems.

Day of Jewelry: Macy’s
Rating: A+

Found these drop pearl and crystal earrings and matching bracelet. I didn’t get a necklace because I didn’t want to compete with the beading on the dress. But now I wished I wore a necklace. Oh well.

Florist: Verbena Designs:
Rating: A+

Jen is great, period! Since I got married at the Royalton, I was contracted to work with either Stefans or Spitz and Peck. I met with S&P first and they gave me such a high quote that I seriously thought I wouldn’t be able to have any flowers during the wedding. Also you couldn’t keep any of the vases, etc.

So then I was seriously considering doing my own flowers, but then crossed that off my list because I would be crazed the day before and day of.

Then I met with Stefans and I had thought they understood my vision. They gave me a decent quote but I was really disappointed with the 1st sample they showed me. I need to figure out how to post pictures on this site first. So since I wasn’t too happy they offered to do another sample. This time the sample was nice, but I tossed and turn all night and realized that I wasn’t 100% happy. So I called the next day. I said that I wasn’t too happy with the sample and if there was any way to change the centerpiece, and maybe show another sample? Goodness it was like I asked them to sell their firstborn child. The person got angry and said he couldn’t make me happy and he hung up on me. I was soooo upset afterwards. First of all if they couldn’t do another sample, then tell me just that. I thought their customer service was sooo awful! I felt sooo screwed over the whole florist thing. S&P was too expensive and Stefans was out of the picture. I tried to talk to the Royalton about this but since they work with the florists they tried to get me to work again with S&P. So I met S&P again and this time their quote was better but I still wasn’t 100% happy.

Then I realized that I can work with other florists, FM me for more details. So I started to email and call others. I ended up picking Jen from Verbena Designs. She was awesome. So nice and friendly and totally got my vision. We chose cherry blossom centerpieces. She worked with my budget and was so patient and nice. The wedding seriously ended up looking gorgeous. It was so gorgeous that people were fighting for the centerpieces. I’m not joking, I almost didn’t even have one for myself!!! All the personal flowers looked gorgeous as well. That lady is truly talented.

This story is to show that DO NOT end up with a vendor you are not happy with. There are so many talented people out there and you should never feel stuck with them.

Videographer: Wellspunweddings.com
Rating: Day of: A+
Rating: Final product: pending

I found Wellspun of course while doing a search on liweddings. I had emailed so many different videographers and looked at so many sample videos but didn’t find anything that I liked. Then I saw a post about videographers that weren’t cheesy but natural. Then I viewed wellspun’s examples and was hooked. Our videographer for the day was someone named Mark. He was so nice and unobtrusive the whole day. I don't think I even noticed him during the ceremony and reception! I think he found my bridal party entertaining because while he was filming us he would chuckle. Hopefully we won’t look too silly in the final product!

Favors:
Boxes: Chinabridal.com
Rating: B

I ordered red and gold boxes to match my Chinese invites, the red ones were fine, but the gold ones kept breaking apart when I folded them. I just solved the problem by sealing it with doublestick tape.

Magnets: Char4U
Rating: A

These magnets were adorable! I got matching magnets to my invites and boxes. It also served as a bottle opener. The only thing it took over 2 weeks to get shipped from China.

Chocolate Lollipops: Milessa’s Chocolate Creations on ebay.
Rating: F-

I never received her chocolates and when it was the week of the wedding I tried to contact her but she was ‘away.’ I was freaking out because I was so nervous that I wasn’t going to have anything.

***UPDATE*** One month after the wedding, she sent a package to me with 200 lollipops!!! Too bad it was AFTER the wedding!!!

Chocolates by Joanne on ebay
Ratings: A+

Joanne was a lifesaver. I got my ice cream cone shaped chocolate lollipops from her FOUR DAYS before the wedding. The other ebay vendor fell through and I found Joanne and she did everything I asked and got it overnighted to me. The chocolates are adorable and tasted SOOOOOOO good. My hubby is an ice cream fan so it was definitely a nice personal touch to the wedding. I knew people liked them because there were not many left at the wedding.

DIY Projects:
Thank You Cards
I was also obsessed with rubber stamps so I purchased many different floral stamps for hand made Thank you cards.

Menus: Me

Programs: Me

Baskets: My mom spraypainted them chocolate brown

Cardbox: Me

Bridesmaids Necklaces/Jewelry: Me

Flowergirl’s Flowerrings: Me

Ringbearer’s Bowties: My mom made them!

Parent’s Gifts: Made a photobook from our pictures for both sets of parents and my grandparents.

Flowergirl dresses: Flowergirlsdressforless.com
Rating: A+

I sent in a swatch of ribbon because I wanted the Flowergirls to match this rosy pink theme that I had in the wedding. They matched it to a T! I was extra happy because the dress came with rosettes on the skirt that was pinned on. I used those rosettes to make the flowering for the flowergirls.

Officiant: Judge Corbett
Rating: A+

The Judge was great. Both my hubby and I were very comfortable with him. We had interviewed other officiants but we didn't click with any of them. We felt that the ceremony was very important to us and we wanted the right person to conduct it. The Judge was respectful and wonderful. He definitely contributed to a wonderful ceremony!!!!!

String Quartet: Claremont Strings
Ratings: A

They played beautifully during the wedding. I was so moved during the Bridal March that I started tearing when I walked down the aisle. Vivian was my contact. She was good but a bit pushy. She kept asking if I wanted overtime, etc. We had them play for the ceremony only because FM provided free cocktail hour music.

Hair/Makeup: Ai Sakai
Rating: A

Ai was great.-she did my hair/makeup and also for the 2 bridesmaids. We all looked like ourselves but better. I had changed my style since the trial but she was very accommodating. The only reason I didn’t give her an A+ is because I told her that we were on a tight timeline. We were all going to Westbury Gardens for pictures at 1pm that day. The bridesmaids started with hair/makeup at 7am. I told her we shouldn’t allocate more than 1.5 hours for each girl. It ended up that each bridesmaid took 2 hours! I didn’t want to say anything and cause a fuss, but I felt that Ai was stubborn about giving them at least 1.5 hours each. I’m not saying I don’t want my bridesmaids to look pretty but c’mon we had a deadline and I’m the bride! So I don’t think I ended up doing makeup until like 11am.

So I didn’t finish makeup until maybe 12:45 but I had to get dressed too. The dress took forever to put on because it had so many buttons. Anyways in the end we were about 30 minutes late for Westbury Gardens. Westbury Gardens only allocates 1.5 hours for wedding photography and we had to pay for the 1.5 hours so that’s why I was disappointed about not getting more pictures there. I think I should’ve been more forceful or maybe assigned the bridesmaid or bridal attendant to keep track of time. I just was too scared to say anything.

Before Ceremony Pictures: Westbury Gardens
Rating: B- (for service)

The Gardens were beautiful but I felt that the person chaperoning us was really annoying. She brought a bag of snacks with her and was munching away. Also I had spoken to this nice lady beforehand because I had thought we would get rained out. I should’ve spoken to that lady again and asked if we can still get the 1.5 hours allocated to us. They are super strict there. They chaperone you in a golfcart over to the gardens. Then they keep reminding you how much time you have left. My recommendation is to get everyone there on TIME……if you want to take advantage of your time there.

Rehearsal Dinner: Gala Manor (Flushing)
Rating: B

We had a Chinese Themed rehearsal dinner. I initially thought more out of towners would come, but it ended up more just family and bridal party. The food was decent but it was a bit loud there. We had a private room, but even with just two tables in there, it was really cramped. Also this other party was karaoking so loudly in the other room that we could hear them wailing. I was too stressed about my slideshow to really relax and enjoy myself during rehearsal dinner.

Reception Hall: The Royalton
Before: B-
Day of: A

My hubby and I had looked at at least 10 reception halls. We knew we wanted to get married on Long Island but we have not heard of the Royalton. We had actually visited Woodbury Country Club and put a deposit down on a date in May. We liked Woodbury but we realized that there will be another wedding going on the same time. Also we would not be able to have a lot of time beforehand to get ready there and relax.

So when we were driving up to our appointment to the Royalton, we were perplexed because it was in a residential area. The house did not seem very grand, just normal when we drove up. But once the front door opened, I was floored. Truly FLOORED. I saw the ballroom and the shiny hardwood floors and the beautiful décor, I remember turning to my hubby and saying that I wanted to have our wedding there. It was like love at first sight. The reason I loved the Royalton was because of the cute garden in the back and the lovely bridal suite and the cozy cocktail room. It felt personal and warm and inviting. It felt very intimate and unlike other places we have seen before. It definitely fit our style, unassuming on the outside but definitely a great surprise on the inside!! Everything was clean and beautiful. I definitely love the understated elegance of the place. The cocktail room was also really nice and reminded me of a den. The bridal suite was huge!! There were even rooms for the groom (with poker table) and parents! I know when I was there they were building a 'cigar room.' I thought the Royalton was definitely a best kept secret.

My hubby and I were debating back and forth on whether to have a Saturday night or Sunday night wedding. We had put a deposit for Woodbury CC for Saturday night, but once we saw the Royalton it was pretty difficult trying to make the final decision. We were worried people won't have fun on a Sunday wedding, etc, but in the end we chose the Royalton.

The best part was that we chose a Sunday, so we had the whole place to ourselves from morning till night! We even would get to stay over!!!! It was definitely a no-brainer. I was there from 7am in the morning till 10am the next DAY....!!!

However I felt that the road to the wedding was bumpy. I think my banquet manager was just a no-nonsense type of person so I felt that I was always bothering him. Honestly I think I was a relatively quiet bride. The only time I was upset was during the whole florist situation, but everything else, I usually had my hubby talk to them. I think there were some misunderstandings, like one time we changed the appointment to a later time and the banquet manager didn’t know and thought we were late, which caused some awkwardness with us, but let me TELLLLLLL you..the day OF, you have nothing to worry about if you are getting married there.

When I arrived the morning of with my matron of honor, I was greeted by my bridal attendant. Ashley was GREAT. Seriously I felt like all day I was hanging out with one of my girlfriends. She was so attentive and friendly and nice. She worked SOOO hard, not just for me, but my whole bridal party. Seriously she deserves huge props.

The day of my wedding had some drama because first of all my heart was set on getting married in the garden area. However it was raining that morning. The banquet manager kept calling me over to have a serious conversation about whether or not we should have the wedding indoors but I was really stubborn. I said I wanted it outdoors…And you know what it was a miracle. I think the sun seriously opened up at 3:30pm right before our 4:30 ceremony. It was gorgeous!!! I felt soooo lucky. Everyone was praying for good weather and it happened!!! It was definitely a miracle!! It made me feel so happy!!

After the ceremony, it was just more and more amazing.. from cocktail hour to reception. Everyone is still raving about the Viennese dessert bar, which I kept secret from everyone. We had them serve green tea and red bean ice cream for the asian palate and everyone was lining up for it!!!! All the desserts were a hit…the place looked sooo beautiful with candlelight. It seriously was the best wedding I’ve been to! I only wished I could've enjoyed it as a guest!!

Of course there were little things that I was disappointed with, like my cake!!! I hated the ribbon color (didn’t match the pictures), but I didn’t let it bring me down.

The only reason I didn't give an 'A+' was that in retrospect after waiting a bit to write a complete review is that at the end of the night I felt they were pushy about us paying them tips. I would've loved to say 'goodbye' to guests and feel calm but I felt that they wanted us to get all that 'sorted out' before the night was over. I didn't even say goodbye to my MIL and FIL and a ton of other guests! I think communication with them earlier in the day to tell them that you definitely want a proper sendoff with your guests is key.

I still believe that if a wedding is 95% the way you want it it definitely is a success.. the other 5% you will think about but you will forget soon enough and eventually think that your wedding is totally perfect!!!

In conclusion there are things that I wished I could've done differently but try not to dwell on...Remember that you can NOT please everyone. There is always someone that won't like your cp's or dress or favors or whatnot, but as long as you and your hubby are happy, that's what matters!!!

The whole time my hubby and I were honeymooning, we kept talking about how beautiful our wedding was. …..!!!!! Hope you enjoy my review!!!

Re: 4-27-08 Wedding Review: Royalton, Verbena Designs, FM Entertainment, Bluedaisy, Wellspun and more...

Hey there!

My advice for OWG is to get there on time! THe problem during my wedding was it took me too long to get ready, ie. makeup, dress, etc. So by the time we got there we missed the first 30 minutes and they are SOOOOO strict. I didn't like our chaperone. It seemed like all she wanted to do is get our session over with and was more interested in snacking (she had a huge bag of junk.) hehe.

Also I wasnt sure if I could take any pictures at all outside because it was raining earlier that day. All in all, I'm sure the pictures came out fine, but I felt so rushed even though my bridal party was really small. (just 2 BM's and 2GM and both sets of parents.)

I would recommend if you want to take formal pictures there, to write down on a list the types of pictures you want to stay organized. I had a 2nd photographer and she was making sure we captured everything.

Hope it works out!!!! Mariann says she's going to have some pictures for us this week on her blog. Don't forget to vote for Jack & Janice on the photo contest!!!

Hi Abby,

I have all my menu selections in an excel document. Can you FM me your personal email so I can send it to you? It would be too hard to type everything in FM. Hope that works for you?
