My 09/18/05 Wedding Review (Fox Hollow, Patken, Flower Michele, Royalty, Body Rock, Oksana, Tarale, and More)
I joined this site in 2003 when I was first engaged and I think that one of the most helpful things along the way has been the bridal review so I wanted to be sure to give a complete and thorough review of my wedding. With that said, I cannot believe how fast the time went by. It seemed that in the blink of an eye we were married. I thought I would be sad to no longer have any wedding projects to get involved with but honestly that is not the case. I am loving the married life – plus I still have my hand in wedding stuff with all my wonderful LIW friends. So, without further delay, here is my review:LIWeddings: PERFECT 10
Seriously, how can I possibly rate this site?! The single most important resource in planning my wedding, my gratitude and appreciation for this site is immeasurable. From finding my wonderful vendors to finding amazing friends this site helped to make my wedding a dream come true. LIW is more than a wedding resource - it is a community of wonderful people helping each other through life’s journey. Thank you Ron and Liz!!!!
Weather: 10
The days before my wedding were a little to humid for my liking and with the threat of effects from hurricane Ophelia I was a little nervous about the weather for the wedding. Fortunately we planned an in door ceremony and reception but I had my heart set on the planting fields. Saturday night we were at DH’s parent’s house for a barbecue when it started raining. I ran upstairs to check weather channel. It said that Sunday would be clear and my MIL told me it would be perfect – both were right. I could not have asked for a better day. It was gorgeous – sunny, no humidity and a light breeze.
REHEARSAL DINNER
Nick and Maggies (New Hyde Park): 10
Excellent service, great price and delicious food (and lots of it). We had a private room on the Friday before our wedding with a party of a little under 20 people. The wait staff was extremely attentive to both DH and I as well as our guests. Caroline, the manager we worked with, was amazing and very accommodating. We had several plates of each of the 3 appetizers we selected come out and every guest raved about their meal. I look forward to many more parties/events there!
Audrey’s Fine Baked Goods (West Sayville): 10
I had been working with another bakery for the groom’s cake when at the last minute they told me that they actually could not do what I wanted. Several of the LIW brides steered me towards Audrey’s. I got in touch with Thomas and in 2 days we had everything sorted out and his assurance that I would get the cake I wanted. With just a jpeg image and a few e-mails I am amazed that Thomas got it exactly the way I wanted! It was perfect and it tasted amazing – so rich and delicious! DH loved the cake. Also a big thanks to Azad and Ray who brought the cake all the way from Sayville to Queens for me…you both are the best!!!
UB – University at Buffalo where we met the first week of freshman year.
RD Favors - myweddingfavor.com: 8
It took a month, and a lot of e-mails on my part to get the silver heart letter openers that I had ordered. I was frustrated that I had to contact them time and time again only to get the run around. However, in all fairness, once it was all sorted out I did receive the favors and was able to wrap them in time for the RD.
Invitation – DIY Project (I was inspired by an Anna Griffin invite I saw that was $$$$ - so I made it myself)
Cardstock, Vellum & Paper – Michael’s
Ribbon – Papermart.com
Envelopes – Paper Access (NYC)
Wedding Invitation – Encore (Perfect Wedding Planners): 10
Good selection and very fast turnaround. We placed the order in December and received the complete order the first week of January. We worked with James who was a sweetie and made the entire process a piece of cake. They handled the corrections we had with professionalism and prompt service. The quality of the invites were excellent – we were very happy with them.
CEREMONY
Sacred Heart of Jesus R.C. Church (Bayside): 10+
DH and I moved to Bayside in 2001 and after trying to find our place in two other churches we finally found Sacred Heart in 2003. After the first mass we became parishioners. We knew we had found our church. There was not a single person involved that did not go above and beyond for us. Cathy, in the rectory, was the biggest help from holding our date two years in advance to answering all of my questions (and there were a lot). She was amazing. Cathy even called me at work when the pre-cana class I wanted became available. Father Brosnan has such a wonderful way about him. He joined the parish not too long ago when the Monsignor retired and agreed to marry us without hesitation. It was an honor to have been married by Father Brosnan. Our organist, Vivian, was also such an important and appreciated part of the wedding. Her voice is amazing and so many people commented on the music. Vivian was so helpful and patient with us when selecting music and helped us to find the perfect songs for each section. The sense of community is just amazing at Sacred Heart. I am so happy, honored really, to have been married there.
PEW BOWS, PROGRAMS & PETAL CONES
All of these reflect my style perfectly but that is because I made them. Rather than give myself a review I want to list where I got my supplies – hopefully it will help.
Pew Bows
Tulle: Michael’s (Ivory Bolts)
Ribbon: Papermart.com (Ivory 2 ½” Satin Wired Edge – excellent quality, great price and fast shipping)
Huge Thank You to Azad & Ray for putting each pew bow up in the church – it looked amazing!!!!
Programs
Paper: Print Icon (18th Street btw 5th and 6th NYC) - I love this store. Great selection and reasonable prices. You can buy in bulk which makes it a lot easier. I got two different papers – a linen type ivory paper for the cover and a lighter weight taupe/grey linen paper for the inner pages.
Special Thank You to Azoodie, d&d05, Doodles, Kimberlybride, Lori0517 who came over a week before the wedding to help me fold all of the programs – page by page and cut down all the ribbon.
Petal Cones
Paper: ACMoore (Carle Place) – this was cut down from 12x12 scrapbook paper (MAMBI) into 6x6 squares. Then I printed the monogram on each one.
Ribbon: Papermart.com – once again excellent!
Huge Thank You to Kim & Donna for filling the cones the morning of the wedding!!!!
Macy’s Manhasset – Wedding Dress: 9.5
My wedding dress was perfect in every way. I saw the dress in 2003 and went to a trunk show in April 2004 where I wanted to purchase the dress but not order it – in the hopes that I would lose more weight. They were very accommodating and let me put a deposit down to secure the trunk show price. In September 2004 I was looking at the Demetrios website and couldn’t find my dress so I called and found out the dress was being discontinued that week! I hauled it over to Macy’s and placed my order. I was a little concerned that I had not been informed but they assured me that no matter what the designer would have cut it for me. Either way, I placed my order and was given a delivery date of April 2005. Sure enough it arrived as promised and everything was smooth sailing after that. Nina, my seamstress, was such a delight to work with. She surprised me by doing something extra special with my monogram swatch inside the dress. She was so excited to show me and I love her for that! Since my train was detachable, Nina left a little length to the back of my dress. It was perfect! When I arrived to pick up my dress I noticed a lot of gray stains on the front…little droplets but they got it out without a problem. I have received so many compliments on my dress and I have to say that I really did love it. I felt like it was made for me.
Myglasslipper.com: 10
I ordered my something blue – an ivory satin swatch with my monogram and our names and wedding date embroidered in blue. It was gorgeous and such a special personalized touch. Very easy to work with and extremely friendly. When I ordered another swatch for Kimberlybride’s shower they worked so hard to get it to me in time. I highly recommend!
Bridesmaid Dresses - Bridal Suite of Patchogue: Grade Not Applicable (Out of Business)
My MOH ordered the dresses through bridal suite and we had nothing but problems with them from the start. It seemed like we were not going to get our dresses with their closing of business but in all fairness we did. The dresses themselves were beautiful (Jordan) and I was very pleased with how they looked on the girls. Alterations were not from bridal suite.
Flower Girl Dress – Flowerama Elmont: 9
I wasn’t very involved with the process after ordering. My wonderful SIL took care of everything so I can only review what I was involved with which was all very good. We went last minute (my fault) and they were able to accommodate us. I was very happy with the dress and thought it looked beautiful on my flower girl.
Dante Tuxedo (Westbury): 10
I loved DH’s tux…maybe it was the cutie wearing it but still, I loved the way it looked! The people at Dante’s were very friendly and professional. The sales person that assisted us helped us get set up with a long two button jacket for DH and the ring bearer and the same jacket in a three button version for the guys. We happened to have a BM dress with us at the time to ship to Buffalo so we were able to match the vests perfectly to it. DH was very happy with the service at Dante – not a single problem with the tuxedos when they picked them up. DH will be going back whenever he needs to get a tux!
Tarale – 10+
Tarale is the only person I had a hair trial with and I booked her on the spot. She does amazing work and she is just the sweetest person!!!! I think of her more like a friend than a vendor. I had two trials with her – the first one was perfect but a friend pointed out that I chose a hair style similar to the one I wore to prom. I guess I really like my prom hair..lol. So I started looking through bridal magazines – I was determined to have it half up/half down. I found a Melissa Sweet advertisement and the hair was perfect. Tarale came to my house, took one look, and made it perfect!!! I opted for hair pins instead of a tiara (3 on each side). I am so happy that Tarale was available to do my hair – I stalked her in 2004 until she was ready to book 2005 and it was so worth it!!! She arrived early and got straight to work – we finished with so much extra time! Tarale also did an amazing job on my girls, who didn’t really know what they wanted. My hair, and more specifically the curls, looked great the entire time! Unfortunately, Tarale is not doing weddings in 2006 as she is taking time off – I will miss her!
Barron’s (Tri-County Flea Market/Levittown): 10
I had no idea what I wanted with the veil but I knew it had to be plain and simple so as not to take away from the dress and hair. I went to Barron’s and got a gorgeous elbow length light ivory veil with a simple thin satin cord on the edge. It was perfect in every way. I love how she has different shades of the tulle as well – there is a huge difference between ivory and light ivory! I would highly recommend Barron’s – price, quality and customer service are top notch!!!!
Hair Pins - Manhattan (6th Avenue btwn 36th & 37th): 10
I loved my hair pins!!!! I found them in a shop right outside where I used to wait for the bus to go home. I received so many compliments on them as well as on the uniqueness of wearing pins instead of a tiara. It was a great find!!!
Makeup by Oksana: 10+
Just like with my hair, I only had one makeup trial – with Oksana – and I booked her on the spot. Her hands are so warm and soft…I almost fell asleep during my trial! And her work – amazing!!! When I went for my trial I had also scheduled my engagement pictures. After the shoot, Doug reminded me that it was important to tell my makeup person not to go too heavy with the eyes because it effects the pictures. So I asked him right there how my makeup looked and he said it was perfect!!! Oksana is such a sweet person – more like a friend than a vendor – actually that really is how I think of her. She came to my house early and got straight to work – but we chatted and laughed – it was great!!! My makeup and the makeup for my girls was flawless! I highly recommend Oksana for wedding and special event makeup. You are in the best of care with her and I will certainly use her again!!!!
Royalty Limousines (Franklin Square): 10+
Okay, I am going to get mushy here because the two drivers that we had were amazing…they really went out of their way to ensure my wedding went off without a hitch. First, we worked with Manny who was such a great guy and such a pleasure to work with. DH was impressed with their fleet as well as the fact that their repairs were done on premise. We chose the authentic Excalibur, an 8 passenger Cadillac and a town car for parents between church and reception for the wedding. All of the cars were perfect – clean, excellent interior and exterior condition, and the AC worked great in all! I was surprised that the Excalibur’s AC was so cold! I assumed an older car like that would have a problem but we were so comfortable! The two drivers, Chris and Ricky were extraordinary. Both drivers arrived early – Ricky at my house and Chris at DH’s house – and we both made it to the church early!!! The day was a whirlwind but I remember Ricky helping me in and out of the limo, Chris coming up to the limo to let me know that he managed to get the church to agree (last minute) to let me have a runner, Chris running to the car to get the unity candle set DH forgot in the trunk, Ricky fixing my train countless times, Chris opening the door to the church for my entrance, Chris taking my train off when everyone left me to get in the car. These guys went over and above…I later found out that Chris put out the programs (DH was pulled for pictures immediately) and even went up to hand them out to people already seated. We arrived at the planting fields without any delay (even though the LIE was backed up they took an alternate route) and to the reception in time for cocktail hour. The town car drive did an excellent job as well. He brought my in-laws back to their house after the church and then waited for them. Once it was 6pm he collected everyone and brought them to the reception hall. They were there waiting for us when we arrived. They raved about the service! We received a complimentary car service to the airport on Tuesday and once again the driver was great – prompt and very friendly! I highly recommend Royalty!!!
Patken Photography (Steve): 10+
We booked Patken early into our engagement. After visiting several photographers we didn’t hesitate to select Patken. We both were impressed with their work as well as their presentation. We took our e-pics in September 2004 with Doug and he assigned Steve to be our photographer for the wedding. Steve arrived on time and ready to work. I wound up with almost 500 proofs – with very few duplicate pictures. Plus he was so much fun to work with. My dress didn’t allow my arms full range of motion so we had some good laughs over trying to get certain poses. We picked up our proofs two weeks after the wedding and we were just in awe of how beautiful they came out! Steve captured some really wonderful moments as well as some fun shots. I didn’t give him a list of must take pics because we decided that we hired Patken for their work and their style so I wanted to give them the freedom to take their shots. I do wish I had made a list for myself though because I forgot some poses that I wanted – end of the world…NO…and definitely my own fault but Steve more than compensated for it with so many of the other wonderful shots we got. I would highly recommend Patken and I do plan on going back to them for pregnancy and family shots in the future. They will become our family photographer – we love their work!
Patken: Thank You Cards/Picture: 10+++++
We received our Thank You cards 2 weeks after we placed the order and they did an amazing job with them! We were able to mail them out to our guests within 2 months of our wedding date and received so many compliments on the quality of the card and picture. They did an amazing job with touch ups and even removing a stray piece of hair on my veil. We loved our cards!!!
Patken Videography (Kevin)
Day of Wedding: 10
Video: TBD
We originally did not plan to have a video but decided to just see what they had. We both had tears in our eyes after watching their video demo and at that moment decided we had to have one. I am so glad we did – we both kept saying that during the honeymoon. The day goes by so fast and it started to seem like a blur. Now we can’t wait to see the video. Kevin was such a great guy to work with. Very friendly, easy going and discreet – never in our faces except with proper warning for certain things. We both agreed that we liked that the two guys work together because their interaction with each other was very good. They helped each other with shots and just really worked well together. I will update this review when the video is ready. Needless to say we are both very excited!
Update: We received the unedited version to date and after reviewing it I cannot contain my excitement! DH and I cannot wait for the final version - everything we have seen is amazing and it was so wonderful to relive the wedding. I'll update with a full review in a few weeks!!!!
Planting Fields (Oyster Bay): 9.5
I was originally going to go to the Westbury Gardens so DH and I went out in September 2004 to see the grounds but sad to say I was not very happy. The roses in the rose garden were dead and I just didn’t get that feeling I got when I saw other people’s pictures there. Trying to figure out what to do I saw some posts on the Planting Fields in Oyster Bay so we hopped back in the car and drove out there. Well, I got that feeling and DH agreed so we got the permit. On the day of the wedding we had the freedom to walk the grounds without a guide which made it a lot easier to linger for extra shots. I wasn’t aware that they were doing some renovations to one particular area so I was kind of bummed that we couldn’t take pictures there but in the end I am very happy that we went. Some of my very best pictures are from the planting fields. With all due respect, the pictures from the grounds of the hall did not suit my taste as much as the pics from the planting fields.
RECEPTION
Fox Hollow (Woodbury): 10
The moment we walked into Fox Hollow we knew it was the reception hall for us. I actually had my heart set on another place and had not even considered FH but DH wanted to be able to compare a few halls so I put it on the list. Thank God I did!!! Our wedding would not have been as wonderful without Fox Hollow and the wonderful people who assisted us. We met with Frank Marino, the General Manager, when we booked and he was always very good about returning my calls and answering all of my questions as quickly as possible. When I called to inquire about stopping by to visit the grounds in September 2004 he was very accommodating. A couple of weeks before the wedding we received the call to get lists and numbers ready. We worked with Jennifer for the finals and she was such a great person to work with. Very friendly and genuinely happy for us. You can tell she enjoys working with brides and grooms which is very important. She offered so many great suggestions and was very good at listening to me and considering my needs and wants for the wedding. Jennifer and Frank included a chocolate fountain complimentary with our Viennese hour! We dropped our items off a couple days before the wedding – can you believe I already forgot which day?! I think it was Wednesday. Joan helped us sort through everything and then we met with Angel for all the last minute details and to review the things I wanted done. Everyone was so nice - very professional yet at the same time a lot of fun to laugh with. The day of the wedding we arrived at Fox Hollow right before cocktail hour and started taking picture. Megan, my bridal attendant, met us right away and started taking things to the bridal suite. She kept everything calm and orderly and brought me a large glass of diet soda…the one thing I was desperate for at that moment. Megan was so attentive to our needs and kept checking on us to make sure we had everything. When I got yet another stain on my dress she came to the rescue with some club soda and a mini dryer! I just felt so bad that she was on her knees cleaning my dress. She was so thoughtful. At dinner our glasses were never even half-way empty! She was the best and if you are at Fox Hollow – definitely ask for Megan! Sam was our Maitre’d and he was a blast! He has a great sense of humor and got the entire bridal party pumped before our entrance – which he choreographed. We received a lot of compliments from our guests in regard to the service. The wait staff was excellent – checking to make sure our guests were okay, bringing the food out promptly, checking on drinks, etc.
Flower Michele (John): 10+
There are not enough words to express how much I love John. From the moment we walked into his shop we knew he was the florist for us…but for two separate reasons of course. I was in love with the samples in the display case and the pictures in John’s albums. DH was drooling over the Mustang….which John brought when he delivered the flowers! John was such a pleasure to work with – he has become such a good friend and he really did a great job for us. I wanted bushy white hydrangeas and that’s what I got – they were huge. I loved my CP but I loved my bo-k even more! It was all that I had dreamed of and more. I was kind of nervous about burgundy calla lilies since they all tend to be purple but John was confident that he could get them for me. I still keep staring at the picture my photographer took – it was such an amazing bo-k. Everyone commented on it. Working with Flower Michele and John was one of the best decisions we made. I never had to worry about my flowers – I knew they were in good hands and I completely trusted John. Everything was amazing and I highly recommend Flower Michele…everything was perfect! Great prices, easy to work with, very friendly and above all EXCELLENT WORK!!!!
Body Rock: 10+
We met with several DJs but Body Rock was recommended by our hall and it was obvious from the moment we walked in why they would recommend this company. From the moment we walked in we were impressed with their professionalism and as we sat with Paul we became even more impressed with their work. DH both agreed that the DJ would play an important part in our wedding – we both wanted our guest on the dance floor enjoying themselves and we felt that Body Rock could deliver…and they did! Our guests are still raving about how good the DJ and MC were. Mitch, our MC was so much fun. He had the crown up from the start and had such a fun personality. Our DJ, Anthony (I think) was also excellent…he had the music pumping and made the transitions well. We had such a great time with these guys. For the CP giveaway we left the game up to Mitch and he did a great job. He had some fun with everyone by telling them there was a red dot under the chair of the person who won the CP. People were turning the chairs upside down when Mitch confessed that he confused the previous wedding with this. Everyone had a good laugh…then he had someone take out a dollar and the entire table had to dance around. The last person with the dollar had to come up to the dance floor and dance for DH and I. It was very cute…we have a lot of great dancers among our friends and family! Body Rock played just about every song from our playlist…including all of the Italian songs we requested. The guys were great and I would highly recommend them – they had our party pumping! Definitely ask for Mitch – he’s a blast!!!

These things were a pain to make – very labor intensive. DH’s parent’s, brother, and a family friend all helped me. Without their help I would have given up or lost a lot of time. It’s a great price for all that work!

Fox Hollow Inn (Night of the Wedding): 10
Excellent. Comfortable bed, adorable suite and breakfast included! We really enjoyed our stay there. It was so nice to just walk across the little garden to the hotel and be able to relax after the wedding.
HONEYMOON
Liberty Travel (Woodbury): 10
We worked with Nancy at the Woodbury location and she was such a pleasure. We knew where we wanted to go so it was pretty fast and easy to book. Nancy made sure we were upgraded to an ocean view suite for our honeymoon and helped us with all the little details. Would definitely use this travel agency again!
Hilton Beach & Golf Resort (San Jose del Cabo, Mexico): 10+
I saw this resort on the cover of a travel magazine in 2004 and as soon as I read about the infinity pool I was set. We could not have asked for a better resort. The entire staff was extremely friendly and very helpful. We had a gorgeous room overlooking the Sea of Cortez and the balcony was one of the more private ones so we were comfortable having breakfast in the morning while we sat out there. We ate at the resort for the most part but also tried a resort that was nearby as well as eating in town. The food was amazing! We tried new things each time and each meal was better than the last. We spent most of our time by the pool but we did get out and tour. We took a shopping tour of Cabo (my suggestion of course), we took a glass boat trip, went to the glass blowing factory, ATV tour through the desert and beach, and we hung out downtown one night. I even got DH to go to a spa for a massage! It was such a great time! I highly recommend!!!!
Finally, I could not have had the wedding I had without the wonderful friends I have made on this site. So many 04 & 05 brides have helped me along the way – answering countless questions, reassuring me at times when I was a little stressed…laughing and crying. Thank you all so much!!!
Special Thank You: Azoodie, Doodles, & Kimberlybride – for all the wonderful pictures that were waiting for us when we returned and many of which were posted in this review. We forgot so many things but you managed to capture it all – and such beautiful pictures. We really appreciate it!
***Many professional shots from Patken Photography were used in this review. Please see my Photo Album at LIW for comments on which ones belong to them.

Congratulations to you and your husband. I'm so happy your wedding day was the perfect day that it was! Your review is great - so thorough! I got married two days before you and I haven't had a chance to even start my review yet, but you have inspired me!
