My November 28 Atlantica Review
Wedding ReviewAtlantica (ceremony & reception)
Jennifer & Todd Jacobs are amazing! They put together a glamorous, fun, amazing, memorable party for us. The food was incredible, the setting is beautiful and the staff was so nice. The team at Atlantica really came through for us. On our wedding day, the rain and wind were beyond description. It was a like a monsoon and a hurricane thrown together. We had planned for a ceremony in the tent (closed and heated) but the winds were so great that at the last second everything had to be reset inside. Both our wonderful florist Claire Bean and the staff at Atlantica pulled it off seamlessly so much that our guests never suspected a thing. The cake the chef created was beautiful and an exact replica of the picture we provided – and tasted even better than it looked! We had a contract for a guarantee of 150. Due to weather, timing, etc, we ended up a total closer to 100. Atlantica in an exceptionally kind gesture added to our menu and upgraded nearly every aspect of the wedding. We ended up with a raw bar that had the best and freshest shellfish, a beautiful ice sculpture, a chocolate martini bar, an intermezzo course of sorbet and to top off a spectacular evening – a Viennese Table with a croquebouche (a French wedding cake made from cream puffs and spun sugar) and a chocolate fountain. Adam and I thought it was truly one of the best days of our life. Beforehand, Jennifer was really responsive via email and very clear in her communication – not to mention a friendly, lovely person. I don’t think we could have picked a better place.
Jennifer Jacobs
Claire Bean (florist)
Claire does amazing work and has some really great ideas for the whole design of our event. She suggested most of the ideas that really helped to bring the look of the day together. One of the most interesting was the floating chuppah. I think she has sworn never to do it again but it made for an amazing visual look to the ceremony. Our colors were brown and blue and she worked them beautifully into everything. We had brown tablecloths crisscrossed with blue ribbon. The bouquets had gorgeous blue hydrangea and brown berries with ivory peonies. We were to have had chocolate cosmos but unfortunately they never arrived from the wholesaler. The peonies were an excellent substitute. She also wrapped all the stems of the flowers in brown velvet ribbon and pinned them with a pearl pin. I really loved how everything came out.

Rabbi Renee Feller –
Rabbi Feller was great and exactly what we were looking for. She met with us three times in her home and helped to create a beautiful ceremony. We loved getting to know here and found her to be absolutely lovely. She was very open to all our ideas and had great suggestions of her own for us. I had wished from the beginning that we had a rabbi more connected to us (like a family rabbi or friend) but neither of us had anyone we were close to already. This was a great other option.

Twelfth Night PhotographyThey are great for the price! We still need to see the photographs so I will reserve a final review until later.
As for the day of, Dominic and his brother Michael showed up exactly on time at the hotel and were very patient and friendly the entire time. I really can’t wait to see the shots and am hoping they got shots of everything I want to see again. They estimate the arrival of photos to be around mid-January.

Robert was really great. He’s very laid back but really seems to know what he is doing. I feel like he was always around for the big moments but was never too obtrusive. We are all looking forward to seeing the results. We got the wide screen version as my husband loves that sort of thing. Husband had to talk a lot to talk me into a video – I was more into pictures – but now I am looking forward to the video since the day went so quickly!

Music by Max (DJ) –
Loved him! Max does a lot of opening nights on Broadway. I had heard him numerous times and he also came highly recommended by the party planner that does most of these openings in NYC. He came to my office twice to meet with Adam and me. He played great music and is definitely a class act. I would highly recommend him to anyone. He did our ceremony, cocktail hour and reception.

Tarale (hair)
Tarale did a gorgeous job on my hair! I ended up heavily modifying the style from the trial and she really went with the new ideas of softening the look. I was so pleased by how it came out and it stayed without frizzing despite all the rain. Her trials are in Baldwin on Long Island so it’s best to have a car but she may make accommodations for city dwellers.

Wendy (makeup)
Wendy also did a really nice job. I wanted a soft natural look and she did a beautiful job. Tarale and Wendy work together regularly and complimented each other nicely on timing. For the trial, she came to my apartment! Loved this as timesaver.

Re: My November 28 Atlantica Review
Tuscan House –We went here for our rehearsal dinner. I got the recommendation from both LIweddings.com postings and from our florist. The food was good and we got a nice room all to ourselves for 40 people. We did bring in our own wine as my SIL
& BIL own a wine store but they charged us $15 per bottle corkage fee (at first they agreed not to charge but went back on this a week before). They don’t do a per person charge but do give a limited menu.

Reva Mivasagar (dress designer)
I got my dress at Reva’s old store in Soho. It was truly my dream dress but way out of my price range. About a week after I first tried it on, the store called to let me know they were having a sample sale including the Belle Epoque. I lucked out when they had the exact dress in a style that had never been tried on in exactly my size. I loved having a dress made out of real silk that really fit my personality and was truly different from everything else I had tried on.

Ann Hamilton (Alterations)
Ann was really great! Turns out my ribs somehow expanded after I bought the dress (or at least that’s how I like to explain it!) and the dress was a tad too tight. She altered it ever so slightly and made it fit perfectly. Her price was very reasonable and she is a very nice person! She mostly specializes in doing her own designs or reworking old dresses but it sometimes willing to do alterations depending upon how busy she is.

Vera Wang (BM Dresses)
The selection is great here with good designs and interesting fabric. The customer service before we bought the dresses was amazing. In the end though, I was very disappointed with them. The dresses are on the high end of the scale as far as price but when I went to pick up the dresses, they were straight out of a box (ie very, very wrinkled). The guy at the front counter stuffed them into too-short dress bags and assured me they were fine. I was unthrilled to say the least. After my five bridesmaids tried them on, only one of them fit without alterations – three of those four required major alterations. Everyone was either measured or submitted measurements. I thought it was ridiculous that dresses that must be ordered four months in advance can’t somehow be made to fit properly. I also feel that the dresses could have at least been steamed and put in bags that fit the dress. Is this asking too much?
I did order an extra yard of the fabric to used to make a sash for the flower girl dress I found online at the Briar Patch.
Maids – 980 Madison Ave, NYC 212-628-9898
Pin Point Custom Tailoring (BM Alterations)
This is fabulous tailor on the upper east side. They do beautiful work. They did three of the bridesmaids’ dresses (two were fixing mistakes from the seamstress below). We would all highly recommend. When I went there with my sister, they also had a lot of high end wedding dresses they were fixing. Check them out!
229 East 84th St, 212-535-7185
Cleopatra (BM Alterations)
This is a tailoring shop on Court Street in Brooklyn in Carroll Gardens. Stay away! It seemed like a cheap, easy solution for two of my bridesmaids who lived close by. The shop says they specialize in formalwear. They did horrible jobs on both the dresses and both needed to be taken to Pin Point to be fixed. They even did a poor job on hemming both of the dresses. Stay away!

Re: My November 28 Atlantica Review
Made by E (Aisle Runner)Erin made an absolutely beautiful runner for us using a design that my mother had created. She incorporated a monogram and our wedding date. It was a neat touch and she was much less expensive than some of the other places we checked out.

Lion In the Sun – Oblation Papers (Invitations & Stationary)
We ordered our invitations from Oblation Papers here. They have a big selection including some smaller designers with really interesting work. The prices run the range depending upon who you go with. They did lots of estimating for us to give us the best range of pricing for letterpress. The calligrapher they used for the addressing did a beautiful job in a lovely chocolate ink without a single mistake.
We also went to them two weeks before the wedding for placecards. They were able to use the watercolor drawing my mother had made and print them in house in a lovely font.
We really appreciated them for their friendly, direct manner and quick turnaround! It’s a really cute little shop in Park Slope. No appointments needed.

Best Western East End –
We had trouble finding a hotel for the wedding weekend. It was out of season and most places couldn’t hold a group our size (20+ rooms). The Best Western really came though. The rooms are clean and generally quiet. It’s really easy to find. The two best things were that they provided a free shuttle to drop off and pick up guests at the wedding and the complimentary Continental breakfast. It was a nice breakfast with pastries, bagels, cereal, oatmeal and yogurt in a nice room. On the Monday AM after the wedding, everyone gathered for breakfast and it was great to be able to spend more time with everyone.

Jam Paper
I got lots of supplies for the wedding at this paper store. I found translucent envelopes for the save the date cards (a magnet attached to a printed card) as well as paper for the programs (ivory card stock) and the place cards for the head wedding table (ginger/brown paper cut into leaves). They sell online but I went to their store on 5th Ave & 18th St. Good prices! http://www.jampaper.com/
Kate’s Paperie
I got fun printable rehearsal dinner invites at the Kate’s on 57th Street. They have a lot of options for printable invites in the front of the store. Make sure to get a few extras as printers are finicky and you will screw up a few.

Re: My November 28 Atlantica Review
Clay Pot (Wedding Bands)We started at Clay Pot before looking at every small jewelry store in Manhattan and the suburban malls. In the end, we went back only to find the perfect rings for both of us. The service is great here and they have beautiful interesting designs that we really appreciated after seeing the same ring over and over again in all the other stores.
http://clay-pot.com/
J. Levine & my mom (Ketubah)
We purchased a simple, cheap interfaith ketubah from J. Levine. It was a circle design with a preprinted edge. My mother removed the old design and created a stunning watercolor to surround it instead. It made it really personal for us and I can’t wait to hang it in our home.
5 West 30th St, NYC - http://www.levinejudaica.com/
Ebay –
I got my veil online as well as my Le Mystere bra. Both were excellent deals. As for the veil though, it came with a plastic come and Ann Hamilton was nice enough to change it for metal one as part of my alterations (making it much easier to put in and take out). As for the corset bra, it was recommended to me by multiple people for the clean lines it produces under the dress. It was $98 in every store that I looked at – online it was half price!
Shoebuy.com -
Found beautiful Nina Shoes at Shoebuy for a good price that matched the design of my dress really well. Free shipping and good return policy.
http://shoebuy.com/
Shoe Service Plus –
I needed my shoes dyed ivory to match my dress. I found this store in Joan Hamburg’s City Weddings book. It was $40 which added significantly to the cost of the shoes but the did a perfect job in a little less than a week. The people watch at this store is great and they seem like a good choice for any repairs or dying for high quality shoes.

Briar Patch -
I found a beautiful dress for the flower girl here for a great price much less than many of the other places I looked. It fit perfectly and the little girl loved it. Only caveat – when she stepped on the hem, it began to fray quite quickly at the wedding. Not the worst thing as it was basically a one time wear.
www.shopbriarpatch.com
C2 Media –
I use this company for digital printing at work. They printed my save the date cards that I attached magnets to as well the directions and accommodations cards for the invitation. I designed the card for the save the date using inspiration I found on a couple of websites including www.bluemooninviations.com. I did the design for the other two cards myself by downloading the fonts from font.com that matched the invitation as well as copying the design. All were done using a combo of Illustrator and Photoshop.
www.C2Media.com
VistaPrint.com
I designed my own magnet using Illustrator and Photoshop based on the website. I printed them through VistaPrint online for a good price and we assembled the STD ourselves using the card and the clear envelopes. A few things I learned: double check the size of type you use on the magnet – my first batch was pretty tiny! Second: make sure to check on the correct size for mailing. Mine were actually slightly on the square side and one post office wanted to charge me an extra charge. I found one that wouldn’t but only because they didn’t measure them.

Re: My November 28 Atlantica Review
M & J TrimmingsThis is a great ribbon store on 6th Ave between 38th & 39th Streets in Manhattan. They have just about anything you could imagine. I got blue and brown organza ribbon for the programs, a brown organza ribbon shot with a metallic blue ribbon for the leaf favors my mother made as well as light brown organza ribbon for the necklaces for the bridesmaids.
http://www.mjtrim.com/ - 1000 Sixth Ave. (Between 37th & 38th Sts)
NY Beads
This is a bead store just up the street from M & J Trimmings. I got the glass pearls and blue crystal beads as well as the clasps and boxes here to make necklaces for the bridal party. I found a necklace online at TurqBridal.com that I copied exactly. Turned out beautiful and everyone wore them at the wedding. One thing I learned – start early! I made three in advance but made the last two in the last days before the wedding. That was nuts!
6th Ave between 38th and 39th Streets (one block up from M & J)
www.nybeads.com
Coach
Got cute little Coach wristlets for the BMs here in black patent leather. They are cute evening purses. I went directly to the store in a Soho and they did a beautiful job of wrapping them including a gift receipt for each purse.
Century 21
I got silver pashmina wraps for the five bridesmaids here. I really wanted to get them high quality ones as I love the one I have had for years. I found them here for a good price.
My Mom -
My mother is an artist and created a beautiful favor for us. She sculpted leaves from clay and fired them with a blue glaze. We tied them with a ribbon, printed our names and date of the wedding on the back, and put them in a brown coppery organza bag. She also created a beautiful watercolor of brown leaves entwined with blue ribbon that echoed our colors. We used this design on the escort cards (printed at Lion in the Sun) and the aisle runner.
Registries – Crate & Barrel, Bloomingdales, Target, Marshall Field’s
Everyone bought from Crate and Barrel! They do ship quickly and everything arrived correctly. I wish we had ordered our pans from here as well since so many guests seemed to prefer this registry. Bloomingdales has been very slow. Many gifts are still on backorder. Target was fine for the guests that weren’t from NYC – one of my favorite things was a pretty set of blue and white corningware dishes. Marshall Field’s was for the Midwestern guests. The store was sold during our engagement and they stopped online sales. Highly inconvenient so two thumbs down for them.

Billion Dollar Babes Sample Sale –This is a great sample sale twice a year in NYC. I go everytime. The last one was the weekend before the wedding and I found a gorgeous dress for the rehearsal dinner from Tocca. I love that sale!!
http://billiondollarbabes.com/
FreshDirect.com –
Everyone came into town early for Thanksgiving so we ended up with nearly 20 people in our apartment for dinner. We got a conference table from Staples and the largest Thanksgiving package from Fresh Direct. It was an enormous amount of food and really made everything go smoothly – not to mention tasted pretty good. We did paper plates so cleaning wasn’t as bad as it could have been. We did have to heat everything up as it was delivered the night before but it did come with very specific instructions on timing that helped a lot.
Some random thoughts:
- I wish I had talked about the order of events at the reception ahead of time with our maitre de. I hadn’t given it much thought ahead of time and I found us rushing in the end to get everything we wanted in – not that a single guest noticed.
- I wish we had gotten limos to go from the hotel to Atlantica. The car situation was a bit crazy that afternoon – esp. with the rain.
- I wish I had remembered to bring an invitation for the photographers to photograph.
- The marriage license! We nearly lost it twice and then forgot to bring it to Atlantica on the day of. Much silliness and stress ensued before it was located and someone had to go back (twice!) to get it to us on time for the rabbi to sign.
- Do as much as you can ahead of time. We were very rushed on escort cards, programs and place cards. This is just how it goes because of trying to finalize the ceremony and guest list but it made for some crazy last few days. I have truly never been so busy.
- Proof and double proof your program. We had two spelling errors due to the rush. Whoops!
And photos….
Here’s a link to a few highlights at Ofoto. Many blurry photos. I can’t wait to see professional shots!!!
