My Really Long Wedding Review (I go on and on...) The Riviera, Flower Barn, Primo Limousines, Bridal Elegance, and much more ! Added some more non-pro pics to the bottom

Hopefully this works right...I did it all in Word, so bear with me if there are issues and stay tuned!

liweddings.com- no rating
Although I have only met a few of you in person for only a brief time (at the WOTY) I feel like I have made some friends on the boards. You girls helped me through a tough year in which I got engaged, planned a wedding, lost my Father in law and my grandfather, and dealt with some other tough issues. I felt that I always had a place to go and vent. Also, it was a lot of fun to be part of The Wedding of The Year.

Having said that, there were many points along “Wedding Planning Road” when I thought I would have been much better off if I hadn’t found this site. There are so many beautiful weddings, so many ideas, so many differences in budget that at times I felt so overwhelmed by things that don’t matter. I struggled working 2 jobs while FH did the same, scrimped and saved wherever we could, AND my parents helped and still I felt I couldn’t compete. Sometimes I felt as if everyone else was having such an easy and fun time while I was miserable.

Now I realize that none of those things matter…everyone says it, but I don’t think you can really believe it til its over. It didn’t matter that I didn’t have a personalized aisle runner or a slipper basket, no one fawned over my menus or programs that I worked really hard on….people just had fun and enjoyed the celebration. I think I started realizing the absurdity of Long Island weddings right away, but still I thought I was Wonder Woman. I’m a perfectionist and a high-anxiety person, neither of which bode well for planning a huge event. LOL. Luckily, there are girls on here and in my “real life” who brought me back to Earth during these stressful times.

I also have a hard time giving a LIW rating because I don’t think it really serves it’s purpose. I think that a lot of the vendors on here get too big for their britches (price and attitude wise), and even though I tried to stay away from the most “hyped” ones, I still probably used more expensive vendors than I would have had I not been on here. I met with a few of the big names and I felt like they acted as if they were doing me a favor by meeting with me. Definitely not a nice feeling.

Also, the fact that the LIW moderators delete negative reviews about the vendors that are registered with them is disgusting. What good is an open forum if you can’t be open?!? This site is made for the benefit of the vendor NOT the consumer.

I still want to thank Ron and Liz and Kim and all rest of the Staff for having this site because regardless of the fact that it made me CRAZY at times it was still an indispensable wealth of information for planning a wedding and I hope someday it truly will be an open forum.

Now onto the wedding:

Weather- A+++++++
I couldn’t have asked for a nicer day. It was absolutely gorgeous. It wasn’t too hot, and the sun was shining.

My Dress (Maggie Sottero AL598 (Limited Edition))
Bridal Elegance- C

BM Dresses (Bill Levkoff #311 in Sable)
Bridal Elegance- D

I would NOT recommend this vendor. I never read any really bad reviews on here about her- only that she had GREAT prices- which is true. But, the aggravation and nervousness this vendor caused for me and my BMs was so not worth the money we saved. In short:
-Dresses came in VERY late with no explanation or compensation
-Alterations were not done when the girls picked up their dresses
-Alterations were done poorly
-BMs were overcharged (IMHO) for poorly done alterations.

Please FM me for more information.

Mother of the Bride Dress- Montage by Mon Cheri in Sage
Rentates in Lindenhurst- A
The girls at Renates are all very sweet and helpful. The alterations woman was nice as well. After mom took her dress home she decided that she wanted it taken up a bit more and there was no problem. Highly Reccommended.

Tuxes- Roger’s Tuxedos-A
We got a great price and the guys looked fabulous! The only problem was that my dad’s vest was missing a button and someone’s jacket was missing a button. Oh well, no one noticed.

Veil -Occansey Designs- A

Just picked one I liked off the website, ordered and it was delivered within I think 2 weeks delivered- no communication needed ? I loved my veil…but it kept popping up on the sides of the comb like devil ears…lol. The photographer had whoever was in the picture with me kinda pull it down so it layed flat in some pictures. The price was right and it worked for me.
[
Headpiece- Barrons- Tri County- A+

Loved my headpiece- it had that Vintage “Thomas Knoell” look at a very affordable price. They have a huge selection of tiaras, headbands, veils and hair pins/brooches. Definitely check them out.
(Bad pic- but you can see the headpiece kinda close)

Photo- Perceptions- C-

-Missing photos due to camera malfunction and probably some that were not taken at all
-photos not what I expected for the price I paid
- Overpriced- IMHO.

Please FM me for further information.

Video- Perceptions- pending

My video is ready but I'm not 'allowed' to pick it up until I choose pictures for my album. I haven't had the chance to yet- I'll update when I get it.

Florist- Flower Barn- A-

I had so much confidence in Mike from Flower Barn, so my disappointment was double when I went to see my sample centerpiece and it was horrible. My mother was with me and we made a few comments about how “green” it was. He said that he got the sample flowers locally and they weren’t as big as they would be for the wedding, and that I shouldn’t worry. We made a few changes (ie- Jade roses that I thought would be a soft sage green were more of a yellow tone- not the look I was going for- so I switched them to different roses I can’t remember the name of- which are a rust brown) I walked out feeling a bit better- but it had been a stressful day and when we were in the car, my mom said something like “I hope they’ll be bigger for the wedding” and I burst out in tears. My mom was upset because I was crying so she called Mike to reassure both me and herself that the flowers would be better. He gave us a little bit of a discount in the beginning- but I felt that I shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality. Mike felt really bad that I was upset and told me that he would never let me down. I felt better after our conversation and even better when I got home to my mom’s and there was a message saying he’d like to show me another centerpiece. The second centerpiece was much better, and when the flowers were delivered on the wedding day- I fell in LOVE with the BM bouquets and my own…they were gorgeous! The centerpieces were also just as nice as the sample. Mike from Flower Barn really came through! I do have to say though, that I don’t think the church flowers were worth what I paid for them. They were boring, cheap looking flowers in baskets (2) and 10 pew bows for $250…I could’ve done the same thing for about $30, but who has the time on their wedding day?!

Bouquet Brooch- ebay seller joannanc A+
I originally bought this to use as a hair piece but I wound up using it to attach my grandfather’s handkerchief to my bouquet as my “something old”…it was very sparkly and served the purpose well.

Reception Hall- The Riviera- B+

The Riviera was NOT my first choice for a hall, but it was in a location that FH liked (he wanted to stay close to home) and it was on the water like I wanted, it was homey like I wanted, rather than marble and chandeliers and the price was something my parents didn’t faint over…lol. In the end, they did an amazing job! I wouldn’t change a thing. The outdoor cocktail hour was wonderful. Mostly everyone I dealt with was great including Victoria and Robert Jay. I didn’t have any complaints until the last few meetings- the owner was around for both. The first time I even saw him- he didn’t even acknowledge my sister and I, just walked in complaining about something to the BM then left. At the final meeting he walked into the meeting room complaining about how all the weddings that weekend were annoying and how the people getting married that night (Friday) wait to pay until the last minute and then expect perfect service (well, duh- it’s their wedding!!) The banquet manager tried to make excuses about how planning a wedding was stressful and he does 5 a week- no excuse…he didn’t even acknowledge us there again…just made rude comments about his customers in front of us. Then when we mentioned that we had bought the giveaways for the DJ he gave us a dirty look and rolled his eyes and said “Well, how much stuff do you have? There are 5 other parties I need to store things for this weekend.” He was a jerk. He also made an appearance at the wedding and walked right by me twice without saying congratulations or asking if everything was ok, or even saying hello. The only other complaint I would have is that one of the BMs I met with (I think her name was Michelle) was VERY unprofessional. She ran the final meeting and made comments about the amount of setting up that needed to be done because of all my DIYs, took personal phone calls on her cell phone and talked to the dishwasher repair man for 10 minutes while we waited. She also used foul language during both phone calls that I didn’t think was appropriate in front of customers.

When I returned from my honeymoon I found out that many guests weren’t offered cake or coffee, the cordial bar was brought out for only 5 minutes, 2 guests never got meals (they were both kids- but still!) and the bartenders were rude to a few people, and a waitress told some guests that the wait staff doesn’t bring drinks to the table- it was bar service only- so not true. Had I never found out about these things, they would’ve gotten an A.

Overall, if it weren’t for the rude owner and the few mistakes- the Riviera was pretty great and I see that it is easily overlooked on LIW- although it could use a little updating- the place exudes charm ,the view is GORGEOUS and the food is good. It’s definitely a place that should be checked out.

Church- St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa- B+
(I know everyone says you can’t rate a church, but I’m going to anyway)

My parents, grandparents and aunts all got married at St. Rose and I was baptized there so it was only natural that I married there as well.

When we started our planning we first met with Deacon Flood- he was very nice and quickly responded to any questions I had through email.

When my grandfather passed away in December Father Andrjez officiated at the funeral and he also baptized my Godson and my cousin, so I thought it would be nice for him to marry us as well. I emailed Deacon Flood and he made the arrangements and passed on our folder.

Foccus and Pre-Cana were uneventful, but it was helpful and we got to know each other a bit better.

During Mass one Sunday in June, the priest made an announcement for a Goodbye dinner for father Andrjez! I was shocked! I had no idea he was leaving the Parish, but he was only going to Rockville Centre so I figured he didn’t call to tell us because he was going to come back and perform our ceremony.

I called to set up a meeting with him and at that meeting he assured us he would come back to do any weddings he had already booked.

A few weeks later, however, I received a letter in the mail saying that the new priest, Father Bruce, was taking over all of Father Andrjez’ weddings. At this point we were only a month out and I was so sick of planning this wedding that I didn’t bother to fight it. Instead we went to yet ANOTHER meeting at the church and met with Father Bruce. He was very nice, and spoke clearly and had no accent (the only drawback for Fr. Andrjez is that some people having trouble understanding him through his thick accent) Father Bruce informed us that he would be away until the rehearsal and that he would see us there.

The rehearsal was a complete waste of time. We started half an hour late, Fr. Bruce wasn’t there, the church lady was mumbling and barely knew what was going on. But she was very clear when asking for our check.

The ceremony was beautiful, but Fr. Bruce pronounced us man and wife and said “you may now kiss the bride” right after the vows but BEFORE we exchanged rings!!!! We got a bit confused and it kind of detracted from that final moment when you’re SUPPOSED to be pronounced and walk back up the aisle. But, the job got done and everybody enjoyed the ceremony and Fr. Bruce’s Homily.

Cocktail Hour music- Juliana Riccardi (Vocals) and Walter Finley (Vocals and Guitar) A+++++++++
Another of my favorite vendors; Juliana is extremely talented and beautiful and she made our cocktail hour seem so sophisticated but FUN at the same time. I wish I could’ve afforded to hire her for dinner hour too!! They do more laid back renditions of popular songs (ie- Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”; both can be heard on her website) as well as some Jazz standards and original songs. I found her on a random craigslist search, looked up her website and hired her without ever seeing her live. It was only after I sent in my (fully refundable) deposit that I went to see her at Skipper’s Pub in Northport. She blew me away! I knew that it was a great choice, and boy was I right!! Check her out at ww.julianariccardi.com.
**Note: She usually works with a man named Steve Messina but he had to be out of town for a few weeks- she let me know 3 weeks before the wedding, and I had seen Walter perform so I wasn’t too concerned, although I LOVE Steve and was slightly disappointed, but I was very happy with Walter. If you do decide to look into her, she would most likely be performing with Steve.**

BM Gifts:

Flip Flops-Old Navy- A+
Can’t beat 2 for $5 on flip flops. I got them gold to match the brown dress, the girls were sooo happy I bought them, and I was too considering 2 BMs were wearing Black shoes with their brown dresses.

Personalized Tote Bags-Ebay Seller- lovedolphins22-A+
Great price (under $10 each) for fairly large tote bags. Ordered them Saturday- received them Wednesday and they came out great. I filled them with some little things like a lipstick holder and chapstick, bangle bracelets, a journal a Ms. Manicure Nail filer (LOVE these- cheap and your nails get so shiny!)

Flowers for hair- ME- A+
I bought faux ivory geraniums and hot glued them to plastic hair combs. I wasn’t sure I was going to use them until one of my BMs showed up with it already in her hair- it looked gorgeous and I was sold. Unfortunately my SIL didn’t get her hair done (or even do anything her self except pull it into a bun…) and just stuck the flower on top of her head. I didn’t notice til after the ceremony, then I moved it to the side. It looks kinda silly on top in some of the pics, but I think I’m the only one who noticed.

Necklaces- Isabella Rose Designs (www.isabellarosedesigns.com) A+++++++++ Probably my favorite vendor! The necklaces were gorgeous and Renee (the owner/designer) worked with me every step of the way. She called me within 2 hours of my sending her an email to ask about pricing and personalization, we talked about exactly what I was looking for, and she sent me samples in less than a week. The samples included 2 different necklaces and samples of EVERY color crystal imaginable (you must ship these things back at your own cost- only about $5 + insurance if you choose to get it. She supplies the envelope). I made a few changes and she insisted on sending another sample to make sure I was happy with the color combo. I approved it and again received the finished products in under a week. They arrived in her signature pink box, tied with a black ribbon and put into a little pink gift bag with tissue paper. She even sent along a wedding card for me and DH- which was soo sweet! Definitely check her out!

(Picture from the website- not the exact necklace, but similar- I used different colors and a different shape drop…- I need to find a better picture)

You can kinda see them here:

better picture:

Hair Towels-Target- A+
I think every girl needs one! Too bad I didn’t buy one for myself!! Its like a Turbie Twist, only it was only $2.50 at Target

GM Gifts:

Armitron Watches- Filene’s Basement- A+
The saleslady was so sweet and the price was great! I love filenes!

Axe Body Spray gift sets- Target- A+
I love Target too…I wanted to get the GMs something to go along with their watches and saw these in Target while roaming the aisles one night with my sister. They were about $8 each.

FG Gift:

I bought the FG’s dress at Marshalls (US Angels for $40!! A+++)
Also bought her some Chinese slippers at a craft fair I went to, a crystal bracelet, a ribbon wand (target A+- this was just for fun- not to use at the wedding lol) and a little straw purse (Gotta love Dollar Tree A+).

RB Gifts:
They are brothers so I just gave them a little gift package with a Build a Bear Gift Card for the older one, Toys R Us for the younger one, and a movie. Plus I designed them t-shirts and had them made at Cafépress.com (A+ for all of the above)

Favors
I ordered both my favors from www.bluerainbowdesign.com photo albums and “LOVE” bookmarks. Both came very quickly. The photo albums weren’t glued together very well so we glued the pages to the spine with hot glue for extra reinforcement.
I forget where I ordered the boxes from but they were pretty cheap (except that the shipping cost just as much as the boxes!) and they came within a few days. We bought the raffia and tissue paper from Michael’s and AC Moore. My mom did all the wrapping and added the silk leaves. A+ for mom! ?

Hair- Mary at Salon Di Domani (Amityville)-A
I went for a hair trial, and although it looked ok, I wasn’t in love with the style on me. I am one of those people who wear my hair pulled back every day- unless I’m out for a special occasion. So I thought wearing it down might be nice- so I had her do it with the front pulled back and the rest curly. I don’t think it flattered my face at all and I hated having it on my neck since it was so humid the day of the trial. Plus the curls fell out really quickly. Not her fault- my hair just doesn’t hold a curl. So, a few days before the wedding I decided that I wanted to wear it all up, but I didn’t have time for a trial, so I winged it. It came out Great (thank god!!) I loved it. The front was perfect and she did this cool knot thing in the back that I loved (I’m not sure anyone got a picture of it ?) It lasted pretty well until the end of the Reception when pieces started falling out. I had to pin a few pieces into place when we were taking pictures- but its my own fault (and the wind!!) I kept taking off my veil and sticking it back in…I should have just left it alone- but I didn’t want to have my veil on in all my pictures. I kinda regret not leaving it on longer in retrospect. Anyway, Mary did a great job on my hair and my moms (Mom’s held up til the wee hours of the morning!!)

MOH hair- Maria at Salon Di Domani- B-

She copied the pic my sister had- but it didn’t look right- the more she tried to fix it the worse it got. So we just told her it was fine, then my sister and I pinned up some of the back and it made a huge difference- in the end she got a lot of compliments on her hair.

Ribbon charm pulls for cake- ebay seller moosefour A+
I meant to have these put into the shower cake- but I totally forgot about them. I knew it would be too crazy at the wedding, so the next plan was to do it at the rehearsal dinner. The night before the rehearsal dinner I was home alone so I baked cupcakes and hid the charms under the icing. Then, I forgot all about them for the dinner, so I was going to have the girls pull them the morning of the wedding- once again, things were CRAZY so they were never used. Oh well, it was a cute idea anyway.

Cake topper- ebay seller googlygifts1 (now has a new name…I’d have to look it up FM me if interested )-A
The end result was sooo cute! But, it did take about 4 months to get it (probably would’ve been longer but I told the seller I wanted it as a Christmas gift). She emailed me pics before shipping and I was able to change a few things. It came out adorable and now I can display the figurine on my bookshelves.

Ring Bearer Banner- Here Comes Your Bride- A
I ordered what I wanted and it came in about 3 weeks. I know some girls have had problems, but luckily I ordered before the seller started taking forever to complete orders. The quality of the fabric wasn’t fabulous…I expected a satiny or at least a cotton with a sheen, but its almost a Muslin. Still, it was cute.

DJ- Long Island Sound- A
I know several people who had used Long Island Sound and they all raved about them. We waited VERY long to book a DJ because DH and I couldn’t agree on the one’s who were in our budget. LIS gave us a great deal and didn’t disappoint. They ROCKED!!! I loved them. Kevin was our DJ and Mike was our MC. They listened to what we told them about what kind of music we liked and played great tunes!
The ONLY negative I have is that they were supposed to start taking the zap photos during cocktail hour, and they didn’t, they took them at the very beginning of the reception, but they didn’t have enough to start playing them on the screens for a little while. So, behind my first dance, which was to a Michael Buble song, there was a very dramatic Britney Spears music video playing on the plasma screen. They continued with other videos throughout the night between the zap shots. I wasn’t aware that this is what they meant by “Live Video.” My guests thought it was a little weird, as did I, but it didn’t change the fact that they were GREAT! They sent me a CD with all the zap shots on it a few weeks after the wedding. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!

Limos- Primo Limousines- A
They were on time and the limo was clean and beautiful and comfortable. Stocked with champagne and soda. The driver was nice and professional. No complaints here. I would recommend them.

Menus, Table Numbers, Placecards, programs, bathroom baskets, favor wrapping, Kleenex boxes, Thank You Postcards, memory candles, unity candle holders- All DIY or semi-DIY- Me and Mom and Sister- A++++ VistaPrint- A+++ mykleenextissue.com- A+++ Staples- D

I had Staples print and cut my menus- the first time they looked nothing like they were supposed to because the Fonts got all messed up (I didn’t know that to preserve the fonts I needed to send them a PDF file.) I resent it, and this time they looked good but they were cut all wrong. At this point it was 2 days before the wedding, so I trimmed them as best I could so they looked centered. I also used a decorative corner punch/embosser. They looked nice- but not perfect. I should have saved my money and printed and cut them myself in the first place.

Favors all wrapped up:

Place cards:

Table Numbers:

Memory Candles:

Unity Candle Holders (Mom bought and decorated them)

Pre-Wedding Events

Save The Dates- Magnet Queen- A+
The magnets were great quality and a great price. They arrived quickly and they even sent me a few extra when I realized I never gave one to my mom (oops). HIGHLY recommended.
(** STD Photo by Angelica Glass from the Wedding of the Year**)

Bachelorette Party-

Mom, MOH and BM- A+- They planned it and did a great job

Regal Limousines- C- then A
Well, there was an issue with payment when the driver came to pick us up (we were told tips and tolls were included in the hourly price- he told us they weren’t) You can read about it here: http://www.liweddings.com/chat/topic.aspx?ID=436453&Highlight=Regal+Limousines
Things worked out in the end and in an effort to make amends, Regal Limousines offered to provide us with transportation to and from the airport for our honeymoon. This time the service was impeccable. The limo was HUGE (an excursion- just for us!), clean and the driver was super nice. On the way home we got a Lincoln stretch and the same driver. I would definitely recommend Regal Limousines and I will be using them again in the future.

Lucky Chengs- B-
Totally different than I expected it to be. I didn’t know we were going there as the plans for the night were a surprise. The food was nasty and I didn’t think the place was work the money AT ALL. BUT we still had a great time!

Barracuda- A+
This was a bar around the block from Lucky Cheng’s. The bouncer at Lucky recommended it…it was a blast.

Shower-

Mom, MOH, Godmother, Grandmother- A+++++- They did a great job with planning, favors, and decorations.

Sidekicks (Massapequa)- A- the food and service were good- no problems at all.

Bed, Bath and Beyond- A-
Had a small issue with BB&B not wanting to give me cash back for returns, basically the manager at the West Babylon Store lied to my face. I emailed corporate and they dealt with the manager and got me my cash back. Plus they gave me a $20 gift card for my trouble. ?

Rehearsal Dinner-Sergios- B+

My mother in law booked the rehearsal dinner. The most important aspects were price and proximity to the church. Sergio’s gets an A+ in both of these, however, the food, IMHO, stinks. Sergio is Columbian, not Italian and the food isn’t really authentic Italian. I personally prefer Olive Garden (and I’m not a fan of Olive Garden, either). It is edible and the basics aren’t too bad. But have you ever heard of Minestrone with spaghetti in it?! Also, they double booked the separate room, and since the other party was the people whose rehearsal was right before ours, they got there first and got the room and we were seated over 3 tables in the main dining room. It was a pain because I had nowhere to lay out the cupcakes I made (I just took them home with me), or the gifts and there could be no speeches or anything because there were other diners around us. So, I unceremoniously handed out the gifts to get them off the floor (the waiter kept stepping on them ) All in all it was suitable, but I wouldn’t choose to eat there on my own.

Well, I think that’s it! If I’ve forgotten anything please let me know! I’ll post some pro pics as soon as I can scan them or get them on disk! Thanks for reading!

Everything looked good and you look very happy. I love the cake. Thank you for reminding me that it is not about all the things you get for the wedding or all the worrying you do about things that people don't really pay much attention to. Congrats!

Your pictures are beautiful!! I'm glad everything turned out wonderful despite a few vendor problems. I can especially relate to the dress situation. I bought my dress from the same place and have the same problems and no dress less than six weeks before my wedding.

Congratulations!! Thanks for the review!!

Awesome review! where did you get your cake? Was it through the riviera?

Yup supplied by the Riviera by Black Forest Bakery

It was really good...ALOT of buttercream though...the layer of icing on the outside was REALLY thick!

Also, the scroll work on the cake was supposed to be in chocolate...but who cares? It still looked nice!

Oh- and my make up was done by my cousin using MAC makeup that I bought

Thanks!

I got them from Dollar Tree months ago!

It was a great deal!

I'm not sure if I can sell them (my sister wants them for her wedding), but I can lend you the one's I have if you'd like. I have 18

Thank you for your review. I love how honest you were. I agree with what you said about this site being for the vendors. Something like that. I had a similar situation. I was concerned with one of my vendors and I posted a question nothing bad. . .anyway, the vendor contacted me in reference to it. It made for a rather uncomfortable situation. I now know not to post true feelings about vendors. It is about the money they pay to be on this site and to not get bad mouthed. So how does this site really let brides know about certain vendors. I also put my trust in my photographer and didn't get the pics I wanted. They came out nice but not many group shots or full body shots of me and my hubby. You did a great job touching upon the same things I felt.
