My VERY LONG review of 7/29 wedding @ Lombardi's on the Sound, Tommy's Tunes, Daniel Krieger Photography, Flowers by Burton, Sandals Grande St. Lucian HM
All the pics I have so far are non professional (except the one on the beach that can be credited to Daniel Krieger Photography). There are lots more in my community album.Vendors
Lombardi’s on the Sound
Planning: (A-)
We had a short engagement (<10 months) so when we were looking for reception sites, all the places we saw had lower rates and were offing tons of extras on available time slots to try to get their venues booked. In my opinion for a summer day (which we pretty much knew we had to go with at the point because we didn’t want Friday or Sunday) nothing compared to this place for the view alone and for the weekend we had in mind, they were booked but the people who had Saturday Afternoon were in the process of changing their time/date...so in that respect we were VERY lucky. The mistake we made was telling them to hold it for us when the change went through before talking specifically about prices or anything else (we had the meeting at Villa Lombardi’s so we know the food options and the general price and then took a quick walk through of Lombardi's on the Sound and were sold). I think that lost us all our bargaining power because they were completely unwavering on price and did not throw in any extras...Also my parents went by themselves to sign the contract (I live out of state) and conservatively set our guarantee at 100 ppl even though we knew that we would have around 150...at Villas we got the price quote dropped $5 per person by pushing the guarantee to 125 so my advice is definitely try to see if you can get anything for guaranteeing as close to your expected amount of guests as possible.
We met with Nicole for our menu meeting...I liked her, my mom though she was a little annoying...although we were pretty sure of what we wanted, she had a lot of advice based on what she had seen at other weddings and kept giving us her personal opinions and in the end we followed a lot of what she said. After leaving, I couldn’t help but think that her 'opinions' and insider advice were trained sales pitches to lead us toward specific things (i.e. convince us to go with the steak rather than the chateau briand because it was easier to control the quality and cooking of the meat even though the chefs would be mad she was telling us that...when really I think that maybe that was because no one would order a big fat steak at a wedding and boom...they save $ by serving no beef) In the end people ordered the steak and liked it though so I guess I worried for nothing. My only other and main complaint is that when you go there for your meetings and walk up to the desk, they complete ignore you until they are ready to talk to you...a bit of acknowledgement would be nice
Day of: (A)
Everything was amazing...Lombardi’s on the Sound was truly the perfect place for our dream wedding...the food was plentiful and very yummy and the Maitre D (who’s name I can’t remember because everything was a blur but she was a very nice lady) and Bridal attendant (Christine I think) were both awesome...we missed the cocktail hour for pics but they both brought us tons of food down to the bridal suite for the last few minutes after we finished and Christine even followed us around with water during pics when she saw that I was getting a little run down from all the time outside…she was awesome. I went to the Maitre D for everything and she totally took care of it. They gave us a sampler platter of dinner so that we got to taste everything that our guests were having which I thought was nice and they packed up everything for us at the end so we didn’t have to worry about it. Our family is still talking about how great everything was and our out of town friends are trying to see who they can make friends with so they can come to more weddings like ours.
The only thing that I honestly didn’t even notice at the time but now I’m totally bummed about is that they had promised us when we first looked at the place that after they cleaned up from the cocktail hour they would open the curtains so we could see the water from inside the reception room. The Maitre D came up to both myself and my mom during the reception and said the same thing but the curtains never got opened…not really a big deal for anything but the pictures because everyone saw the view at the cocktail hour but I’m a little peeved that they promised it, brought it up again and it never got done…
Tommy’s Tunes (A)
We booked Tommy’s Tunes without even meeting with them just from seeing them at other weddings and it was one of the best decisions we made. I was going to go with just the DJ but having an MC was one of the only things DH voiced his opinion about during the planning process so we went for the DJ/MC package and couldn’t be happier. Frank the MC was amazing…I think I can honestly say that he made the wedding. Everyone was up and dancing the entire time and he did it just by being fun and energetic and not cheesy (which was a big thing of mine). I went to him a few times with little things and he did whatever I asked right away. There is a song that me and my college friends dance to at every wedding and bacelorette party and I know they asked for it but it didn’t blend with everything else so it wasn’t getting played…when I went up there to ask, it came on in like 5 seconds…I felt very important. I asked him that day to throw in singing happy birthday to my mom and he had the whole room singing and it went off with out a hitch. The DJ was great too playing a good mix of all the kinds of music we asked for and as I said, everyone keeps talking about how great it was.
Only tiny exception was that my DH had some family members here from Greece and I had asked them to play a few songs including some traditional one that welcomes the bride to the family that my MIL wouldn’t stop talking about. In the end they played one Greek song (not the bride one), followed it by and Italian song and my much larger and louder family took over with a tradition of dancing around with napkins on their heads and then that was it. A plus for Frank is that he made a point to warn me before that they didn’t have a ton of Greek music (which again, I’ll take the blame for because I only handed in my paperwork on the Monday before the wedding and made a specific point of saying not to play too much because it was only for 15 people out of 140 but I think my In-Laws may have been bummed...not that they would say anything and it certainly didn’t ruin anyone’s times by any means but it was a tiny thing that I think was worth mentioning)...In my (and most other) opinions though, everything was perfect.
Flowers - Burtons (A)
My mom booked this one pretty much w/out my input based on recommendations from her teacher friends. Both John and Jill were really great to work with. We met with John for planning and brought him pics of the bouquet I wanted and he was really great about recreating it (it was PERFECT – I loved how it was so full w/out being overly round just like the picture and exactly what I wanted) and we really seemed to be on the same page with the way the colors and styles would work. He offered suggestions (like don't use yellow roses because they always look brighter than everything else and put all the GM in ivory bouts instead of the pink or purple I was thinking about because that looks too much like the prom) which I really welcomed since I had not made up my mind and besides the bouquet was a little lost. We went in to see our sample centerpiece and it was right on except that they missed that I also wanted purple roses in them which they added in no problem and they were great the day of. The bouquets and centerpieces were exactly what I wanted. We got tons of compliments on all the bouquets….they looked full and fresh and lasted in water for over a week. (Lombardi’s on the Sound girls - I did low 6x6 cubes and they were full enough to make them fine for the oblong tables.)
Daniel Krieger Photography (Our Photographer was Kristie) (A-)
I hadn't really found these websites yet and I didn't know about the big names (Duet, Imagine, etc) until after I scheduled and met with only 2 photographers on a trip to NY over Christmas. I hadn't done enough research because the other one was with a friend of a friend of the family and I assumed we would go with them. In the end I didn't like that guy and it pretty much came down to not going back up there again so we went with Krieger. They are a Lombardi's recommended vendor and we saw an album that Kristie shot there and it was beautiful so we went with it.
She was such a sweetheart…she totally listened to what we wanted but was at the same time creative enough to give us some nonstandard shots…I don’t think this is her fault because I made it very clear that the most important to me were the pics on the beach and she followed that but now I see other non-pro shots from guests and think maybe we should have done more balcony/gazebo shots too…I was a big pain because pics took A LOT longer than I had hoped…again, not her fault more just logistics of the long drive and the limos not going directly to the beach and people getting lost (although the “people” in question was actually the photographers assistant and we spent a while at LOS directing her when in my opinion we should have just started without her) and Kristie knew that I was getting really impatient so she definitely tried hard to move things along which was greatly appreciated.
On the downside, in my opinion there weren’t enough candid/dancing pictures but again that was in large part to a family decision to take everyone out for 30 minutes during the reception for big group shots…not so much Kristie’s fault at all, she did a great job based on what we asked for and what we presented to her. But at the same time I also feel like her plan was to follow us and our parents around and there are some not so good ones of them/us when I tend to think that she could have captured something better of someone else at that same moment. She also missed some details that I would have liked (like the tray and stefana on the table at the ceremony, centerpieces, the room set up before the guests came in, place card and guest book tables) but I never specifically mentioned these (or even the general idea of such shots) so I can’t fault her too much…she was really good about this kind of stuff when I was getting ready so I think the biggest problem was that we really just ran out of time.
Overall, I was/am really upset about missing the whole cocktail hour AND almost ½ hour of the reception for pics but there were a lot of factors involved so I don’t want to blame it entirely on the photographer. What I’m focusing on is that I’m totally excited about and impressed by all the pics we have…I think we may be looking at an album upgrade from the 60 pics that are included because we’re having a hard time picking…the getting ready, ceremony, and posed photos are awesome and I think she did a great job of blending in some awesome photojournalistic shots....I mean I'm not sure it gets any better than the pic below..I LOVE it!!!
M&V Limousines: (A)
So I was VERY scared from the reviews but my parents booked this one without talking to me too...after I found out their reputation I made my parents go in there and really push that they better not mess anything up and I’m not sure if that was it or what but I don’t have any complaints. We ordered 2 Lincoln limos and a Chrysler limo and they brought the Chrysler, an Escalade and a Navigator (to me that’s an upgrade so I’m quite happy even though it’s not what we asked for). All the limos were on time and they were clean and the drivers were nice (except I think one got into a fight with a valet at LOS but they whisked me away fast enough that it wasn’t my problem). They brought a runner and put it out in the church for me which was another unexpected surprise. We needed one car for an extra hour to get back and forth to the beach for pics which we didn’t anticipate so we extended on the spot and it worked out fine. We had one limo come back to get us in the end but between my parents and us, we promised rides to way to many people so my dad tried to call them up and blame it on them because they sent larger cars in the morning but not for the return ride. They promptly and rightly shot him down on that complaint because we got exactly what we asked for but it was funny to hear my dad try to tell them it was all their fault. We asked for a towncar to the airport the next morning and they sent a limo…it was on time and clean…only issue I have is somehow they got us to pay $35 for a recall fee or something when my parents swore everything was taken care of but because it’s how I am, I’ll chalk that up to miscommunication.
Hair: Melanie, Cactus Town & Country, Huntington (A+)
I cannot say enough about Melanie. She is totally awesome as a person and a hairdresser and I completely trust her to do what is best. (She’s also family so I may be biased but I would recommend her in a heartbeat to anyone who will listen) I showed her a bunch of pictures and she kind of merged them into an awesome interesting but still delicate ½ updo. Too bad I forgot to take my veil off so noone (including me because I also forgot to look in the mirror all day) got to see her awesome work ?…but BMs who did get to see it promised it was really pretty.
Make-Up: Shab, Cactus Town & Country, Huntington (A-)
She is amazing…I had gotten my make-up done by her before and I just let her do what she thought would work and it worked then. When I went to my trial I told her to do the same thing and it looked good that day too. On the wedding day she totally changed everything. She didn’t do airbrush because she was concerned that it would make my face runny if I was sweating which was fine because I was never sold on the idea. After she saw my dress and flowers, she made all the make up a bit softer and changed my lip gloss until she thought it was perfect. In the end the day of ended up being so much better than the trial (which I liked to begin with) and I was so happy!! It definitely wasn’t dramatic but I looked like me w/ my best features brought out. She’s also so nice and has such a calming thing about her which was nice for such a hectic morning. The minus is because I saw a pic of later in the day and I have mascara under my eyes…I’m pretty sure that isn’t supposed to happen.

Dress:
I bought it at a store in VA and my MIL (a seamstress also in VA) did my alterations so I won't review that. The dress itself was by Michaella and was reasonably priced for the simple dress I wanted for out 9:30 AM wedding. It wasn't silk but it was soft and pretty in a plain but classic and elegant kind of way and exactly what I always pictured for myself. I got lots of compliments.
Veil:
E-Bay Seller VeilsNMore (D)
It was only $23 incl. shipping so I figured I'd take a chance...the veil showed up and it looked like something that was part of a Halloween costume or a child's bride dress-up set...it was too short (my fault because I didn't measure or try on many, I just guessed) but also just not the quality I would want for my wedding day...turned out to be $23 down the drain
Veilshop.com (B+)
this is the one I wore...the quality was much better although not as nice as I've seen on some other brides...the comb was a good size and sturdy but not detachable like my hair stylist suggested...it was a two tier with a shorter top tier and I thought it was a little weird that the bottom tier seemed narrower than the top one...it did come in less than a week and I had a week to return/exchange it if I wanted (which I may have done for the same one in equal length tiers) but I let that week slip past me...in the end it served its purpose and was reasonably priced for what I wanted.
Shoes: Nicole by Grazia (A)
They were still comfortable and I was able to wear them all day even though they were 1/2 a size too small because I waited until the last minute and needed to buy them that day for my fitting and the store that I bought them at (My Glass Slipper in Alexandria, VA) only carries one pair of each shoe in each size at a time. They we not cheap but I think they extra $ was well worth the benefits of the look and feel of something a step above regular dyables. They were almost w/out a doubt my favorite part of my outfit ?
BM Dresses: Ann Taylor Celebrations Line (C)
After searching at bridal salons and not finding anything that really wowed me, I found the perfect dress as part of the celebrations line at Ann Taylor.com. The problem was that I found them at the end of March when they were pretty much sold out of their Spring line. But I was assured by numerous people at 1-800-Dial-Ann and my local store that the color that I wanted
would also be coming out in their summer line at the beginning of May and that I could preorder them. OK, no problem. But when I tried to call and preorder and they told me that they had already received over 1500 preorders in that color and there was no guarantee that I would get the dresses even if I placed the preorder....what?!?! How do they not know how many dresses they are going to make and where the cutoff point is? Well, I should have given up at that point but I had made up my mind and there was no turning back. Thanks to the diligence of one of my awesome BMs, after calling bunch of stores she was able to find 3 of the 5 sizes we needed at the store in Manhattan so I got those shipped to me in VA. Then I called my local store and talked to them about it some more and they told me that the preorders were website only and that they were getting more in the store on April 24th and that my best bet would be just to go there and buy them at that point. So I almost listened but my MOH said that she thought I should try to preorder the remaining 2 anyway so I did that as a backup. Thank goodness I listened to her because come the end of April, I was told that the stores weren't getting the dress in the color I wanted...no explanation or anything, that was just how it was...so I called 1-800-Dial-Ann tons of times (mostly because every time I called I got a different answer and some people know what they are talking about and some DO NOT but try to pretend that they do and some just tell you that they don't know anything) and they were able to tell me that since I had placed my order long enough ago, that I could be rather sure I would get the preorder dresses...at the beginning of JUNE!!! Again no explanation as to why it was pushed back, just that’s when they would be ready....So long story short, I did end up getting the dresses sent to me but not until almost the end of June...luckily they required little or no alterations and I was able to use a coupon on all of them so at least in the end they were more reasonably priced than bridal salons... although as another surprise for the summer line the sashes that were originally included with the dresses were now an extra $18 each...fabulous!!! I think that a biggest problem was that they just didn’t expect the volume of orders that they ended up with and weren't prepared so the low grade is for their inability to give me straight answers and for no one really thinking there was a problem with that…oh and the dresses are still what I was looking for but they are by no means as cute as they look on the website. On the plus side, the dresses can be worn again (in theory) and a lot of people had good things to say about them at the wedding…
Tuxes: Men’s Warehouse (A)
DH and his brother (the best man) bought theirs in VA, the two groomsmen rented theirs (one in VA, one in FL) and noone had a problem. They were all ready on time, exactly what was requested and looked awesome. I would definitely recommend them over some of the places that seem to cater more to proms and stuff.
Other
Stefana and Ceremony Accessories: Kentrikon Noufaro, Astoria (A)
We stopped in one day about a month before the wedding and ordered everything and they were very pleasant to deal with. Since I am not Greek orthodox and my husband is
a guy, we were totally clueless...they were helpful in telling us what we needed (and I don't think they took us for a ride or anything) the prices were higher than what I expected but everything (stefana, tray, almonds, small candles) came as a set which made it worth it for the convenience factor. Also, I'm not sure if I should post this or not but they don't charge you tax if you pay with cash so that was a plus. We picked up everything on our way up to NY the Wednesday before the wedding and it was ready and exactly as we ordered.
Save the Dates: Magnetstreet.com (A)
We used picture magnets. They are good size and quality and come with lined envelopes and are not very expensive at all. We sent a scanned picture that was a bit grainy so they made sure to also have an actual copy to make sure they worked with the best option. In the end we were really happy with how they turned out. The turn around was a little less than 2 weeks (which was better than their 3 week estimate) and they were very easy to deal with. Their website also has the best selection that I came across.
Invitations: InvitationLane.com (Invitations by Checkerboard) (A+)
Invitation lane was awesome...after looking around at actual stores, we decided on Flourish Monogram by Checkerboard. I searched for this invitation on google and I think invitation lane was the only online vendor that came up. Their prices were amazing (I think they were like 33% below retail and they gave you the checkerboard 25 free invitation deal that was out at the time). The primary contact is Beth and she is I think the most patient person in the world. I sent the original text and got back the first proof and decided to change a bunch of things...no problem. Then there was a monogram at the top of the invitation and I honestly sent her like 6 e-mails a day about changing the font and spacing until it was my opinion of perfect and she was totally helpful and patient with me the entire time...if she thought I was as crazy as everyone else did, she definitely never let me know....she even made a bunch of mock-up monograms herself before sending off to checkerboard for official proofs to help save me money (pdf proofs from checkerboard were $10 each). Once I approved the final proof, the invitations were delivered in 3 days directly from checkerboard in Massachusetts and we perfect, beautiful and great quality...everyone was very impressed. I would definitely recommend both invitationlane.com and checkerboard.
Bridal Shower and Rehearsal Dinner: 34 New Street, Huntington (A)
Let me preface this by saying that my mom lives just outside Huntington village and eats dinner here probably about once a week and we LOVE the restaurant in general. The staff is great and is totally accommodating to everything that you ask for or want to do for your parties. They have two rooms...we had the front one for the shower since it was a Sunday afternoon and this room is nicer but at night (especially on Friday when we had the rehearsal dinner) you have to use the back dining room...which is fine too but not as nice as the front. The food is really good and reasonably priced (happened to be the cheapest of all the places I called)...you get pizzas for the table as apps (the Dijon chicken is the best) then a buffet with salad and entrees (you choose from standards but everything is done well). The let you either pay per person for beer/wine or open bar
or they let you run a tab and then discount it at the end. They let you bring in whatever you want for dessert.
Honeymoon: Sandals Grande St. Lucain (A+)
We went for six nights starting at 6:00AM the day after our wedding…I recommend waiting a day or two and/or staying longer. After about 8 hours of plane/airport time and a 1.5 hour bus ride we got to our room, spent the rest of the day napping and the next day settling in so we both feel like we really only got to enjoy ourselves for 4-5 days. So that being said, we LOVED our honeymoon. I’ll break it down into what I think is most important to pass on.
Room: We had a concierge room (which we booked for 24 hour room service and a minibar in the room) but the added bonus was that when you arrived, they took you up to the concierge suite and gave you champagne and cheese while you filled out a tiny bit of paperwork and then you were free to go and could stop in at anytime and they would handle everything for you. We went back the next day to talk about excursions and then anytime I needed anything from a room service menu to reservations for restaurants or snorkeling, I just called that one place and it was all handled for us…I definitely recommend a concierge room for for anyone who (a)plans to spend any time in the room or (b)basically doesn’t want to be bothered
Restaurants: Let me start by saying that the best meal we had was dinner at the bayside café (which is right by the pool and where they also have the breakfast and lunch buffets). We went there because we had already gone to the Italian restaurant (which was pretty good too but they really need to dim the lights or loose the grass green walls in there) and we were too lazy to take the bus to the Regency (where most of the restaurants are). So we went in, had a great meal with a very pleasant waiter and got to listen to the reggae band that was playing by the pool bar…it was very islandy and we really liked it.
Kimonos was worth it…our chef wasn’t very exciting but the food was yummy and it gives you a good opportunity to mingle (the rest of the week we stuck to ourselves by choice and this happened to be our last night so maybe we were finally getting bitten by the social bug or something but we had a really fun time)
La Toc (at the Regency) and The Pier (at the Halcyon) not so much worth it…the atmosphere at La Toc was nice but food was marginal at best…I don’t like to eat too much beef but we had heard that their filet was good so I ordered it…well it might have been because we were seated at 8:45 and they ran out or it might have been because they thought I wouldn’t know any better or care if I did but I most definitely did not get a filet…what I had tasted fine but I was still aggravated on principle. We went to the Pier on our first night out because I was under the assumption that it would be romantic…well the food was what I would expect but it was just a regular old restaurant with no atmosphere and a few windows that looked out on pitch black so if there was a view you couldn’t see it anyway…I think some of the open air places at the Regency would have been a much better bet….long story short, I think if you don’t try too hard and stick to the more fun, outdoorsy type places, you’ll come away with a better dining experience.
Excursions (extra $) and Water Sports (included): I cannot speak about too much but let me say that everything we did was amazing…First we did the ATV excursion where they take you by a 15 minute bus ride to somewhere offsite, you ride the ATVs to a private beach and hang out for a while, drive them around for a while as fast as you can in the sand and dirt (this appealed to DH’s “car guy” persona) and then you drive them back, get on the bus and go back to the resort…it was very fun because it was something different…but it was MESSY!!!! We decided that this would be out only excursion since St. Lucia was new to us anyway so we were to cheap to pay $ to see it from a boat or a jeep or the edge of a volcano…it was a good choice for us but if you want to do more, you definitely can. Oh, we did pay $5 each to go over to the national park (right down the beach next to the resort) and hike up the little mountain...also very much worth it…it was good for some fake out exercise and great for pics.]
.
As for the water sports we did the snorkeling (a bit longer than it needed to be but still very cool), the Hobie Cat Sailboats (by far our favorite experience of the week…they give you a short lesson and then you can take them out whenever you want….its very peaceful but fun at the same time) the crazy aquatrike (kind of fun but also much harder than it looks). There’s also waterskiing and tubing included but one of the tubes had a hole in it and we wanted to go together (we’re dorky like that) so we didn’t do it and waterskiing is way over our heads.
Basically I can say that when we first got there we worried a bit that we paid too much for nothing but the more that we did and the more that we found our own routine for what and where we liked to eat/drink that thought went away very quickly and we had an AMAZING time…I highly recommend St. Lucia, Sandals and specifically The Grande.
