Our very autumn 10/29/06 Flowerfield Wedding (Lovin Oven Floral, Imagine Studios, All Star, Alert Bus, The Chocolate Duck, Time Square Orchestra and more!) NOW WITH PRO PICS & honeymoon review!
My 10/29/06 Flowerfield Wedding (Lovin Oven Floral, Imagine Studios, All Star, Alert Bus, The Chocolate Duck, Time Square Orchestra and more!)Whenever anyone asks me how our wedding day was, I just say perfect. Most of the day felt surreal. I remember sitting having coffee with my sister that morning saying “I don’t feel like today is my wedding day” she agreed and said, “I don’t know what to tell you because I don’t either.”
Everything felt so magical, from the moment I walked through those church doors to the moment we went off in the car after the reception. I could not have asked for more. I researched my vendors and it proved to be well worth it since every single one was excellent. There was not a moment throughout the entire day that I was frustrated or even bothered, everything, once again, was perfect.
I’m sure I will continue to add comments and such (there are also more photos in my album), but here goes, hope this helps out you future brides…..
Ceremony Location - St. Dominic's in Oyster Bay
This is not my home parish, but I’ve loved the church ever since I saw my cousin get married there. Through my aunt, we were able to get married here by Father Dariusz. He’s young and very intelligent; both of us really like him right off the bat. Precana at the church was much better than we expected.
I’m Catholic and my husband is Presbyterian, so this was a little bit of an issue. We had a Presbyterian Reverend (the one my husband grew up with) join in the ceremony and they had no problem with this. They both spoke, designed the ceremony together, and made it meaningful for all of us. Truthfully, the Presbyterian minister blew everyone away, I got numerous compliments on his homily and meditation. We were very lucky to have him join our celebration, after all he’s known my husband for almost all of his life.
The church itself was beautiful with the decorations from my florist, and they had many autumn decorations already up at the altar.

Reception Location – Flowerfield, St. James – 10
When I first booked Flowerfield I was in love with it. I couldn’t be more excited. Over time my indecision made me crazy and I second guessed it a thousand times. I thought it was too far away from my church and it wasn’t the “mansion wedding” I had always dreamt of. My husband thought I was insane. It turns out he was right.
As time went on and we met with Carolyn, she made everyone of my dreams come true, including a stunning ice sculpture for the cocktail hour. The menu was outrageous (we got to add the pumpkin soup that I had been obsessed with having) and the décor was one of a kind. We hadn’t seen anything like it anywhere else. Anytime I had a question or concern, I would call and was able to reach someone and get in answer that same day. The customer service was on point and there was never a moment where I felt they didn’t have the time or dedication to deal with me.
We dropped off a million items a few days before. We had the caramel apple placecards (9 boxes), guitar signing board, family photos, champagne flutes, etc etc…. and they never once made us feel like we were putting them out. Everything was displayed just as we’d asked them to display it.
When we arrived Carolyn, our coordinator, was standing at the door with my bridal attendant and Maitre'd, Andy. We wanted to go in and settle a little before joining the cocktail hour, and many of our guests had arrived early. They bustled us through like celebrities, cameras were flashing, I felt like I was famous!
We got into the bridal suite with the fire burning, the drinks and food laid out just for us. Within moments I had a glass of champagne in my hand. We took a few photos there then headed off into the ballroom so see it all set up. My eyes probably bulged out of my head when I walked in there. The glow of the room was exactly what I hoped it would be. Each centerpiece had a pin light on it, the room was just perfection. We took a few photos in there and headed into the cocktail hour to finally join our guest. They ushered us in and told us to go across the bridge, which we did, where we were greeted with yells, cheers and applause. It was awesome!
Throughout the cocktail hour, people kept coming up to us and RAVING about the food, the room itself, the fact that they had room to sit down, the chocolate martinis, and more and more.
The reception came before we knew it and everything went smoothly. Andy kept us in the loop at every moment, letting us know what was happening when. This helped us know when we could make our rounds to greet tables, when food was served and so on. Everyone was eating and eating, all loving the food and stealing bites from the person sitting next to them. We continued to get compliments from our guests throughout the night from one woman telling us they’d be back here once it was time for their daughters to get married to others just telling us how impeccable the service was. When the reception ended, they packed everything up for us and made it really easy to head out to the hotel and enjoy the rest of the night. I can honestly say not one thing went wrong or was even slightly off. It was perfect and superseded any of my expectations – and I am one picky gal.

Cake(s) – The Chocolate Duck, Farmingdale – 11
We use The Chocolate Duck for every cake for every event in my family. Though Flowerfield included a cake (from the wonderful Audrey’s Bakery no less) we still opted out and decided to get our cake from The Chocolate Duck. Chrissy made my cake for my shower, which was actually one of the original wedding cake ideas I sent her. Not to mention the amazing chess board cake that we served at the rehearsal dinner for my chess-a-holic hubby. For the wedding, we had a delicious carrot cake which everyone raved about. It came out better than I ever could’ve dreamt. It was even more beautiful that the photograph I gave her to try and mimic the cake after.

Florist - Keyth at Lovin Oven Floral Designs, Sayville – 9.5
I met with quite a few florists and couldn’t believe how much my dream flowers were going to cost. One after another and all I could see was dollar signs. When we met with Keyth, I was having too much fun to even worry about money. My mom and I were laughing and getting excited about all his creative ideas right at the first meeting. We decided to book him that night. I went to my sample meeting about 2 months before the wedding and walked into the centerpiece all set up. It was amazing and I couldn’t be happier. I’d sent Keyth a million photos and had no idea what to expect. It was above and beyond. The sample meeting lasted 2 hours and we went over ever little thing since I changed it ALL since our initial meeting a year earlier. He never once seemed annoyed and listened to every idea I had and tried to find a way to incorporate it.
When the bouquets were delivered to my house on the wedding day the girls could not stop oooohing and ahhhing. The bouquets were just beautiful. Keyth really outdid himself here. The church was amazing, the candelabras on the altar were breathtaking, and I loved the pew decorations.
I made sure to go into the ballroom to see everything all set up beforehand. With each centerpiece pin-lighted the room just glowed. The flowers were simply gorgeous. The only reason I did not give them an “A++” was because there were aspects of the centerpiece that were missing (floating flower faces around the centerpiece), but there were some flowers along the table. The other was that the pew decorations were supposed to be moved to the cocktail hour room. They were not. Besides those two little things everything was AMAZING. The flowers were so beautiful and I loved every one of them. They were hearty and colorful and looked amazing in the church, reception and with mine and my girls’ dresses. My husband loved his boutonnière, and believe me, he really could care less about flowers most of the time. So for him to even MENTION it made me smile.

Accents for Bouquets – WhiteAisle.com – 10'>
I wanted something to be butterfly, I just loved them. I ordered these from White Aisle and they looked amazing in the girls’ bouquets.

Photographer/Video – Imagine Studios – 10 so far…. (more photos in album - waiting on rest of proofs & DVD)
I love photography and felt this was one of the most important vendors. After all, when all is said and done all you have from all that money spent on the wedding are your photographs and video, so I was willing to invest in the best. We visited about five or six photographers before booking Imagine. I was very particular and we needed someone we knew could keep things running smoothly since we were going to be on a time crunch for daylight (daylight savings was the night before). When we arrived at the studio to meet with Imagine we looked at their books and then looked at each other – we loved every single photo. They were more expensive than anyone else we met with but it was too late, they were everything we wanted. We booked them immediately.
When Lia and her assistant arrived I was so excited. I got all my little details together, my invitation and earrings and anything I could think of and just gave it to her. She was snapping away at everything while I finished up getting ready. I felt so relaxed with her. She was so genuinely sweet and really got a million photos before we had to leave for the church.
During the ceremony I didn’t even notice her or Nelson (video). I hate when I am at a wedding and the photo/video people are all over the place. We didn’t have time to do a receiving line (daylight) so we kinda ditched it and went off to the side. Lia was right there to offer her congratulations and get us back into the church for a few more shots. She moved things along so smoothly and kept us on time.
After the church we were on to the planting fields. By this time it had gotten pretty chilly and the wind was killing us. The girls and I were freezing, but luckily had pashminas in between shots. Lia moved us right along and remembered to take all the photos I’d asked her about previously (I sent her a brief “must take” list). I would’ve completely forget. She would arrange us and I would think to myself “oooooh, this is THAT photo that I wanted.” It was so wonderful to not even think about it.
Nelson was keeping us laughing, no matter how much we were shaking or getting goosebumps for keeping us cold. He even took my pashmina and wrapped it around himself – I was jealous. Hehe.
Lia was rolling around the on the ground, jumping on ladders, using every spec of light that came through and every autumn leaf around us to get that perfect shot. I am so excited to see how the proofs come out.
Throughout the reception, she was sure to get the family photos out of the way as soon as we got there so we could enjoy our time. I hardly noticed she was there, except when she would appear right when I was surrounded by loved ones then – click – should would get a great shot of us all together. Towards the second half of the wedding she reminded me of some pics I had told her I wanted of certain people. I was so happy she did because I would’ve been sad if we didn’t get them. I didn’t see Nelson once throughout the reception, though I knew he was there. On occasion I would see the light from his camera, but that was it. This was so important to us. I wasn’t even going to do a video because I hate when it’s in the way, but again, I didn’t even notice Nelson was there unless I saw the light.
I could go on and on about them both. They kept their energy up from 1:00pm-11:30p.m. and it wasn’t until Lia said goodnight that she seemed to actually have slowed down. We are so excited to see how everything came out, I know the photos and video are going to be just beautiful.

Planting Fields – Oyster Bay 10
I grew up going to the planting fields all the time, as did my husband. It’s a beautiful and special place to both of us and was very close to the church. It was a easy choice! It was about $120 for a permit, which we got in advance.

Musicians – Time Square Orchestra – 9
There was not one moment when the dance floor was empty. The music was constant and so were the good times. Everyone was dancing, we’re a partying kinda family. The music was excellent and they played a lot of the songs that we requested, including a CD of Greek songs we brought along. However, there were two songs both my husband and I really wanted them to play. They were on their original list of songs and on the “must play” list I sent them. When I asked them to play it, and when my husband asked them to play his song, we were both told no. That they hadn’t rehearsed them and wouldn’t be able to wing it. The song my husband requested was the one he was going to try and sing with the band (he’s a musician), so I was pretty bummed about that. Still, it was hard for me to give them less than an “A.” They were wonderful, the music was great, it just happened the two songs they didn’t play were pretty important to us. Perhaps it’s our own fault for not communicating it better. It’s hard not to give this band a perfect score when you get constant compliments all night long and the dance floor is full every moment. I would still recommend them to any and every bride, but maybe suggest being a bit more clear about exactly what songs are REALLY important to you. Also, they never said goodnight or goodbye or good luck or nuttin. I just turned around and they were gone. Granted, I was probably saying goodbye to a million people at that time.
I must also point out that they played Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News for our entrance song, per my husband’s request. They then later played the song in its entirety which started quite the dance-a-thon on the dance floor, where we as a newly married couple were front and center. I don’t ever think I’ve ever seen my husband dance like that, it was awesome. Definitely a highlight of the night I will never forget!

Transportation – All Star Limo, Farmingdale – 10
In looking at limo companies I learned that this is quite a shady business. Everyone we met with said something totally different. I wanted a Rolls Royce and was nervous about traveling between our church and reception since it was almost 40 minutes away. Since these cars are old, I wanted to be sure they wouldn’t break down (I was in a bridal party where the bride ended up hiking it back to our limo on the LIE b/c her car broke down!). One told us it would be no problem, another one said to get a regular limo – “an old Rolls will never make it” and the ride would be terrible, and another said I would get sick since the suspension in the old cars are awful. So, I was on the hunt for a Rolls with NEW parts that would ride efficiently and get us to Flowerfield without me puking or the car breaking down. We met with Deb at All Star and she was great. I voiced my concerns and she explained that their Rolls had their parts replaced in 2002 or something and that there was no reason it should breakdown. They also had a fleet of limos (some companies have to outsource) so at least I knew if something DID happen, we had about 10 backup plans in the garage.
Both the limo for the girls and the Rolls came almost an hour early to my parent’s house. The drivers hung out downstairs with my family and were sure to take anything out of our way and put it in the cars. The drivers were so friendly and got us everywhere we needed to be when we needed to be there. The Rolls was a vision, it was beautiful. I wish I could travel that way all the time ;o) They were also sure to set up the runner in the church and even had a red carpet available for the walk from the car to the church doors. They were a little off on some directions but I knew exactly where I was going and it didn’t bother me at all to just let them know the better way to go. A lot of the roads we needed to take were off the beaten path. We were on schedule for every aspect of the transportation.

Bus – Alert Bus Company – 10
No problems here. They picked everyone up and dropped everyone off. I heard it was VERY clean and the driver was super nice. They did leave one couple behind, but that was both the couple’s and my fault. The driver actually came in to use the restroom and saw me passing through then asked if he had everyone. I said I think so without even really checking (my bad), the place was almost empty. The band also made an announcement that the bus was leaving, the one couple just didn’t hear. Luckily, we had a car service there and they are very close friends so we had no problem giving them a lift back to the hotel ;o)
Invitations & Programs – Smashingcards.com – 9
I made myself crazy with invitations. I wanted this and that but I didn’t want to pay for it. Finally, I found Smashingcards.com and fell in love with their designs. I worked with Ashley and never once even spoke to her on the phone. We went back and forth on emails and she got back to be fairly quickly most of the time. I loved how the design came out and was practically squealing when we got the proof. The only drawback was that I received my invitations an entire week late. Now, keep in mind I was not late in sending them out at all, I simply had a bridezilla moment that made me think I NEEDED them like 10 weeks before. So, even though they arrived a week later than they originally told me, I still had them in plenty of time to send them out. They’d already sent the envelopes far ahead of time so I was able to have them calligraphied. When they arrived, they were beautiful and completely assembled. They even put all the stamps on the RSVP cards. All I had to do was insert hotel cards, stuff them in their envelopes and send them off. We received many P.S. notes on our RSVP cards that read “Your invitations are simply beautiful!” Some people told me they didn’t want to throw them out.
The programs also came out amazing, but were ALSO late. When you are trying to keep things in order the month before the wedding, these little hold ups can be more frustrating that they were normally seem. She took a few days to get back to me when I started emailing her about their whereabouts. Overall, I would say she was really sweet to work with, unbelievably talented and I looooooooooved how everything came out. It was just annoying that things were a little late and she was sometimes hard to reach. Again, I got the programs in plenty of time – three weeks before the wedding.

Jeweler – Carole's Corner, Northport – 12
We got every piece of wedding-related jewelry from Carole – my e-ring, our wedding bands, wedding gifts for each other, watches for the groomsmen, earrings for the bridesmaids and all of my wedding day jewelry. Since she is family, I would say that maybe she treated me special, but I watch her with her customers all the time and they are treated just the same. I would recommend anyone to go there, for whatever they need. She went above and beyond for everything and got me EXACTLY what I wanted. All I had was a picture of earrings and she found them within a week. I can’t rave enough about how helpful and wonderful she was.

Dress – Bridal Reflections, Carle Place – 9.5
I heard horror stories about this place but decided that since it was so close to home to give it a try. Plus, they carried the gown I already knew I wanted. I just needed to try it on one more time to be sure. We went on a Friday night, which I highly recommend. There was no one else in there and I got every shred of attention from their employees. The woman who helped me dug out gown after gown and really listened to what I was looking for. She brought out some huge ball gown and though I had told her not to, I had such a blast trying it on and almost considered buying it (except that I am way too short to pull that thing off). Their prices were fair (actually hundreds of dollars more fair than MACYS for the very same gown) and I bought it that very same night. The whole experience was exactly what I imagined it would be like. It’s a beautiful shop, very elegant, and my mom was “ooohing” and “ahhhing.” The woman even let me hang out in the gown for an extra 15 minutes while my sister drove there to see.
Everything went smoothly with each fitting – three in all. I did not even reach my minimum and was happy to stumble across a $100 coupon (from the Oheka Castle Bridal Expo) that they allowed me to use right at my second fitting even though it was almost a year old.
I was in and out for each fitting and the dress fit perfectly. I was in LOVE with my bustle and got numerous compliments on it. The only snag was that on my wedding day, while I was putting on my dress, the “hook” for the hook and eye was missing. My sister found one and sewed it in, so it turned out to be no big deal. Still, perhaps it could’ve been attached a bit better.

Bridesmaid Dresses – Jessica McClintock in Roosevelt Field Mall – 10
This was probably the easiest part of my wedding planning experience. These dresses were the first item purchased. Only a few weeks after I was engaged, I went to the Roosevelt Field Mall with my sister. She wanted to go into Jessica McClintock just to “look.” She found these dresses, tried it on and fell in love. She wanted the rust color and I was leaning more towards brown. We decided that she, as the MOH, could stand out in the rust while the other girls wore the brown. Within a week they all went in to try them on, ordered their sizes, and had them a week after that. Easy breezy, and they are BEAUTIFUL.
Some girls had a bit of a problem with their dresses because they waited until the week before the wedding to get them altered.
*See previous mention that these were received by the bridesmaids a year ago*
I felt terrible, but one of my bridesmaids had to buy a new dress. Luckily they still had it in stock! She’d been a bride just a few months ago and perhaps was even tinier than she normally is when she ordered the dress, but either way it didn’t fit. The other girls also had to let their dresses out a little, but on the day of they all looked breathtaking. I got a ton of compliments on their gowns, and each of them did also.

Mother of the Bride Dress – Bridal Suite of Huntington – 10
My mom was really having trouble finding a dress she loved. She found this one and they were able to make the scarf into sleeves and she was thrilled. I didn’t hear any complaining from her about a thing so I will assume everything went smoothly. I thought she looked great and the dress fit her beautifully!
Tuxedos – S&S Tuxedo in Hicksville – 10
This was another simple part of our planning process. When I went with my husband for the first time, we were in and out in maybe 20 minutes. They got out every vest in ivory they had so I could put my swatch up against it and helped me pick the one that matched best. We knew we wanted simple traditional tuxes so it wasn’t that complicated. The guys were asked to start picking up their tuxes up to three days before so they could get fitted, and all of their tuxes fit each of them well. When my husband complained that his vest looked dingy, they took out a brand new one and gave it to him, no problem. Again, all the guys looked great – especially the boys!

Shoes – Craft Shoes in Commack – 10
This was quick and easy. I found a pair I liked, bought them and had them dyed. They were a good price, the dye job matched very well and the shoes only started to hurt by the 10th hour! They have a huge selection here and I think one of my bridesmaids managed to find a pair for herself too.

Hair – Michelle, Bernadette, and Robert from StephenRobert Salon in Great Neck – 11
Michelle made my hair look absolutely perfect. I was in love with my hair, it looked awesome and stayed that way all night. My hair often doesn’t hold curl and it looked awesome for 12 hours, even with all those high winds after picture taking! We were outside for a while with the wind blowing like crazy and it still stayed in place!
Not only was Michelle awesome, but Robert at the salon also did highlights for me a week before. I got so many compliments on my color, even from strangers in the grocery store. I highly recommend him.
Bernadette did all the girls’ hair. Two of the girls always HATE how their hair comes out, and they both LOVED it. All the girls did, I thought they all looked beautiful.

Veil & Hairpins – Barron’s in Tri-County Flea Market – 10
I didn’t think it was necessary to spend a lot on a veil – tulle is tulle. The veil matched my dress perfectly, was exactly what I ordered and served its purpose. The hairpins were so pretty and ended up looking even nicer in my hair then I thought they would. This was another super easy part of planning.

Make-Up – Kim Clark from Prescriptives in MACYS in Huntington – 11
Kim was awesome. I met her last year when I was a bridesmaid in another wedding, she was doing the bride’s make-up, which was beautiful. As soon as the time came, I asked my friend for her number and went for two trials which both came out great. I loved how my makeup came out, and she was a joy to have around. I felt like she was one of my girlfriends. My mom also loved her makeup. She’d had a burn (go figure!) from getting her eyebrows waxed a few days before and you could not see even a memory of it. We were both really happy with how our makeup came out and it lasted through the day and night. Note: Bring your lipstick when you go to take your photos. After all that kissing I didn’t have any left!

Donation Favor – Make-A-Wish Foundation
They were very accommodating and sent us a really great image for us to print out and make donation scrolls with. They personalized it and emailed it to us so we could print it out on our own.
Caramel Apple Placecards – Waldbaum’s in Jericho – BIG FAT 0
They never ordered them. We went to pick them up with intentions to make the placecards that night and they never ordered them. I think my inner bridezilla peaked at this moment. Luckily I went into solution mode and made some calls. In less than a half hour I discovered that BJ’s carried them.
BJ’s Wholesale Club – 10
I love BJ’s for saving the day. Not only were the apples in better shape than the ones in Waldbaum’s, they were less expensive! We also had to join that day and lucky for us they were having a special. So not only did we get the apples at a better price, we can now purchase toilet paper in packs of 50 whenever we like. hahahaha.

Card/Photobox and place cards for apples– Cheryl from Exquisite Affairs – 11
I had some pretty grand ideas for this box and I knew I could never pull it off if I tried to DYI it. If there is one thing I learned through this whole planning process is it that I will probably end up SAVING myself money after I mess it up the first three times, so why not just have someone else make it :O). Cheryl did an amazing job, we received so many compliments and it held every one of our cards with room to spare. We had a very large wedding so she requested we go for a larger size, good thing we did. It was almost full! The placecards were also beautiful, just what I asked for and they looked awesome on the apples!
Matches – Invitations By Dawn - 10
Prices were right, delivery was quick and they came out exactly how I wanted them. I did find some cheaper places, but they had a much larger selection for designs and I really liked these leaves :O)

Pashminas for BMs – H&M – 10
They were $10 and just a little something extra. I thought they would be cute and at that price, why not. The nice ivory color was also really pretty and just what I was looking for. Thank goodness I got these. It was SO windy when we were taking photos and the girls might’ve disowned me had they not had something to throw over their shoulders.

Hyatt Regency Wind Watch – Hauppauge – 10
This was a beautiful hotel to stay out. In my opinion, it’s the best in the area. It is also one of the only hotels to have a bar, which we used for a short after-party with our out of town guests. We worked with Heather who was very helpful. Everything went smoothly. All the guests received their guest bags, even us! There was one in our room with a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries! Good thing too, because we forgot our toothbrushes and were smart enough to stick ‘em in there. The suite was beautiful and the view was amazing the next morning with beautiful fall trees with changing leaves as far as you could see. I wish we could’ve stayed in there all day long. We had the best breakfast in our room then went downstairs to meet our guests and say our thank yous and goodbyes.
