I was wondering if you have any possible lists of common 'must have songs' and 'do not play' songs that you can list.
Thanks!

You should not feel obligated to have any 'must play songs' that you have heard at other weddings or receptions. You should only have 'must play songs' that you want and that are important to you, your future husband and your families. This is your wedding and you should not settle for anything-especially the music. Just because another bride or a friend had certain songs- does not mean you also have to have them. I would avoid any songs that have a negative family connotation (for example if there is a second marriage somewhere-songs from the first marriage should be avoided). The only songs my DJ's do not perform-under any condition-are any songs that have questionable lyrics. There are many popular songs on the radio that have lyrics which have no place at a wedding. Keep a pen and pad with you-when you hear a song you like or has special meaning-jot it down. Equally when you hear a song to be avoided-add it to the'do not play list'. By doing it like this you avoid the stress and worry of making up a song list. The music then becomes more important and personal to you and your future husband. Re: DJ's
Thanks Stan, I appreciate it. My request was just a late at night freak out. Because 100 days after offically postponing our former date which was only about 3 weeks before... well we know have the Air Force's permission to marry and have a Sept 27th date booked and everything is full speed a head even at a somewhat slow pace since my fiance is still out of state and not always around for input nor do we really want to wrack our brains when we are together thinking of certain stuff. We knew in advance from him being in the military and us having a LDR what was important, but after postponing we really learned as long as we are both there with our priest and our parents is all we need. But along with that we want to make sure our guests that are making the trip from out of state or who took the time off to attend our mass since it is 1pm on a friday and isn't too convient but we had to make due because of time constraints and rebooking certain vendors.
And just looking for some insight with music selection, I enjoy reading your input on this board and if we didn't book our DJ as fast as we did b/c orginally we were only booking about 140 days in advance I would have definetly given you a listen, especially if I was a scotto bride. But I am an Imperial Manor bride and went with a house vendor who I have heard at there location and thought sounded great. I know you aren't my vendor but I am just looking for some help and if you can I would appreciate it:) We have a pretty young crowd 20-late 50's. We are both 23 and our eldest groomsmen is 27 and my brother and acts about 22.. lol Were not that big of fans of disco music and definetly no Grease. But we just need some good party music, we have probably one of the easiest crowds to get up since we have a fun, drinking and dancing crowd guest wise.. so any songs you recommend or think from what I put, think I should make sure I stay away from?

Re: DJ's
I would agree with Stan's insightful comments. As far as 'popular' must or do not 'plays,' there really is no standard. My clients have very diversified interests in music. A favorite of one would leave another cringing. A general consideration would be to suggest a variety of music from many eras so that every guest would find something appealing. You may also want to express a desire to avoid anything 'extreme.' Be clear on expressing to your DJ general guidelines for your limits re: profanity, sexual explicitness, 'break-up'/'cheating' lyrics, etc. The line between appropriateness is often fine. For example, a Destiny's Child 'Bootylicious' or Nelly's 'Hot In Herre' are hot dance tunes yet some find them a bit too sexually suggestive. So... you need not necessarily give your DJ specific songs but you can provide general guidelines.
If you do give your DJ a list of songs, however short, hopefully he or she will get a sense as to the style of music that you desire. If I have a client who has no requests for music, I go through a list of maybe ten 'love 'em or hate 'em' songs, and how they respond often helps me plan music for their day.

I agree with Michael's suggestions as well. I cannot emphasize strongly enough that you should be very specific in any songs or types of music that should be avoided-regardless of what any guest requests from your no list of songs or types of music.Tell your DJ NO EXCEPTIONS. Tell your DJ that if he has as question or is unsure of a song- to first check with you -in advance or at the wedding. You can give him a general list of likes and dislikes. You still have enough time to sit down with the DJ and go over this.Since you are on a time limit -he should be understanding enough to make the time for you. He should already have an extensive list for you to choose from. This will be easier for you and will give you the control over the music selections. I agree that what one bride will like - another may choose to avoid. This is a very personal decision as to the selections. I wish I could give you a 'magical song list' but there is no such thing. Each wedding and each bride is totally unique in what works for them. STAN WIEST A.STAN WIEST MUSIC www.stanwiest.com/li_wedding_dj2.htm www.stanwiest.com
I agree with both Stan and Music by Michael. I am sure that the DJ you hired is professional and will not play anything inappropriate for a wedding. That should be his business. It is true, what one couple likes another may not! However, on my website, I have some songs broken up into categories. One is called 'Crowd Pleasers.' These are songs that many (of course not everyone) people enjoy listening to. Maybe this will give you some ideas of what you would like or not like to hear at your wedding.
Also, most DJ's, if you just tell them the era, or style of music that you like, should be able to come up with great songs that your guests will enjoy. I'm sure it will be great!
