Florist ?

What types of questions should one ask a florist? What is important to know and look for? This is one area I am clueless. I love flowers. Thank you.

Re: Florist ?

Since you love flowers, it is all the more important that you ask a lot of questions when interviewing your florist. You are hiring an artist who has training, a portfolio and a track record (i.e. recommendations from either past brides or vendors with whom they have worked)

1--Explore fully the formal training and background of the florist--their training (on the job vs. formally trained), work experience and/or internships, length of career and length of time they were affiliated in their current position. See if they have professional affiliations with trade associations that may be of interest to you. Look at their website before the meeting.

2-Scrutinize their photo portfolio carefully. Take your time. This is what your wedding will look like. Does it suit your style and affair? Is the work creative? Does it look like it took time and thought to create, or does it look routine and 'thrown together'. What does the work do for you on an emotional level?

3--See if the florist has any press clippings about their firm and or work as a way of looking at what types of events they may have done.

4- Ask about the finances, contract terms and additional charges (labor, delivery, set up, removal, if any, etc.) Find out which florist in the firm will actually do the work (and see their portfolio!) and who will deliver the work. Go over all the details to make sure that all parties understand the scope of the job specifically. When you decide to book, get a copy of the written contract (and keep it!)

5- Make sure that you click personality wise with your florist. With all the stress of a wedding, avoid working with someone who you do not feel comfortable working with, talking to, getting on the phone and having them return your calls. You will spend a lot of time with this person designing critical aspects of your wedding. You need to have this be a stress free part of your planning.

6-Lastly, look around until you find the relationship that is right for you. Do not settle until it feels right, and you feel that this florist has the time for you and shares your vision and committment to making your wedding dreams come true. You'll know when you find that person.

I hope that this helps--Good Luck,

Lynn from Florisan
