Re: JOP/Judge needed
Hi and congratulations.
I so wish that NY was one of those states where a notary was allowed to marry people. We could all switch hats so easily then.
Although professional officiants are very comfortable with giving you your wedding your way, the majority of us who call ourselves 'Officiants' do rely on an ordination for our legal authority.
The question to ask if for family or personal reasons you need absolutely no religious affiliation from the person marrying you is 'By what authority do you sign the license?
As far as I know, I don't think that any of the officiants here on LIW will refuse to give you a strictly Civil Ceremony if that is what you want.
Town Hall will have a list of officiants. In order to be on a town list you must be either a civil or interfaith officiant but they tend to focus on judges. Every town hall has it's own list so check a few if you don't find one who is available right away.
With that said, a judge doesn't usually do the amount of original writing and personalization that a professional officiant does. I'm not trying to sell you one way or the other but rather to give you some food for thought, and there is a huge difference in the level of service. You will want to make sure that what you get is more than the bare minimum required by law that has you in and out in 5 minutes.
You may want to get some feedback from Brides who have had someone other than a judge do a civil ceremony for them. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
Wishing you the wedding of your dreams, followed by a lifetime of happiness.

Re: JOP/Judge needed
Hello,
Congratulations on your engagement and up and coming wedding.
As a former employee of the City Clerks Office of NY, I know best of all the marriage rules and regulations for the City of New York. The way it works for NYC, if a judge is not registered with the City Clerks Office he / she cannot validate a wedding (officiate legally). However, I am not sure if that applies to Nassau and Suffolk County.
I will send you a forum mail describing the services and fees offered by Marriagenyc, Inc. We focus on CIVIL BASED WEDDING CEREMONIES.
I am listed under NYCWEDDINGS.COM and am the officiant from the 2006 The Wedding of the Year hosted by LIWEDDINGS.COM and NYCITYWEDDINGS.COM.
