I am beginning my search for a photographer. I would like both color and black/white pictures. I met with one photographer who said that I do not need black/white photograph taken because all color photos can be printed in black/white. This did not sound right to me. Is the quality the same? Is this correct?

Photographer Question
Um.
Technically, that is correct. Black and white CAN be printed from color. In traditional printing, it costs more (digital is the same.) But you''re likely not to choose more than a few. When you see a color photo, you''re likely to keep it color. Also, the photographer likely is choosing to have one photographer, one camera, and one type of film. That''s the easy and inexpensive way out.
I''ve been doing this type of photography for over ten years. The only way I know to do it right (and I''ve tried every other way to save time and expense over the years) is to have two photographers (one color and one black + white), many cameras with different lenses and purposes (we generally have anywhere from two to five active cameras for each photographer) and several different types of films for different purposes (we use a pallette of seven different types of films on every wedding, both black + white and color.)
By all means, if you don''t see the difference or the reasons, then save your money and go with what works best for you.

Photographer Question
When people ask us about black and white for a wedding, we explain that we offer it many ways. We don't do black and white unless they want it.We don't charge extra. They can have black and white or sepia, their choice. If they only want one or two photos in black and white, then maybe staying in color film and changing only those into b & w at the lab is the best way to go.It is not exactly the same quality, but it's o.k.We can use b & w film of your choice if this is especially important to you, but then cost can be a factor. Remember, you can't go the other way and change black and white into regular color (although we do hand color b & w upon request.) The most common request we are asked for
is to use 1-3 rolls of b & w mixed in with 10-20 rolls of color we normallly use --all 5 x 5 proofs usually (we use 14 different cameras and you can choose several different formats as well as b & w choice). Please see our website to see what we are talking about...see our on-line weddings (MANY OF WHICH CHOSE B & W TO BE MIXED
WITH THE COLOR AT CERTAIN TIMES IN CERTAIN PERCENTAGES.) See the website...www.photosoftheheart.com
Good luck and congratulations on your engagement !!!
