My photographer told me that is an industry standard to tip 8-10%. The seems high to me - Is this true?

Re: Tipping Photographers
That doesn't make much sense since 'packages' vary so greatly. The cost of the package has nothing to do with the photographer's performance and your desire to show gratitude for the hours of work (which can also vary greatly.)
Factors such as travel time, logistics, number of locations, and total time of the day should all be considered (but not necessarily the package!) I happen to charge the same for everything in the same place in Port Jefferson (getting dressed, ceremony, portraits, and reception) as four locations in the city (gotta do something 'bout that!!) and so the photographers are being penalized for extra hours and travel, which could/should be made up with a gratuity. (Not such a fair system, but a bit complicated to fix.)

Re: Tipping Photographers

Re: Tipping Photographers
My photographer owns his own business and told me he expects a meal but the second photographer he'd like to see get a tip and just eat at cocktail hour.

Re: Tipping Photographers
Not too saavy on the etiquette for tipping photographers, however from speaking to some who I have worked with in the past, it's been my experience that most would rather a tip in place of a meal.
Just a little hearsay.

Re: Tipping Photographers
I'm not a photographer either but here's an generic opinion...
I am a sole proprietor and never expect a tip or a meal, nor are either mentioned in my Retainer. We all have different experiences with both of these issues. I will say that from my experience it would be unusual for a meal not to be provided and I'd say that I receive a gratuity about 50% of the time. I find that the tip has little to do with my performance. Some people enjoy providing a gratuity when it is felt that the service exceeded expectations. Do that which is most comfortable for you.
