Visiting and getting married

Hi everyone,
I am thinking about taking my girlfriend to New York to get married. We are from the UK but want to go away somewhere and get married then come back and have a big party for all our family and friends. I am not 100% sure when we will be coming over but by guess it either November this year or Jan/Feb next year.

I am after some suggestions on where to actually get married, as I said there will only be to two of us so I am not really sure were the best place to actually do it is. We obviously want somewhere nice but understand that most of the places won't cater for just two people. We will be staying in Manhattan, but anywhere in the surrounding areas will be fine.

Hopefully someone with some local knowledge can point us in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Visiting and getting married

Hi and congratulations!

If you are considering Central Park I have a great article on my website that links to photos of different locations.

There is also a page with marriage license information.

The big things to remember there are that City Hall in Manhattan doesn't take cash, so go with a money order or they send you down to the drug store to get one, and that the license cannot be used till 24 hours after it is issued.

My UK couples have all been able to used their passports as ID.

If people know you're getting married they will undoubtedly want to come with you. With the exchange rate what it is New York is a Holiday shoppers paradise! But if not I have on many occasions asked strangers on the street to witness.

Wishing you happy planning and the wedding of your dreams!

Re: Visiting and getting married

I totally agree with Pastor April about getting married in Central Park. We have worked with couples from all over the UK (from London to Scotland) doing just what you are suggesting. I would say that most people coming from abroad do choose to be married in the park.

I just wanted to offer that there are a few chapels and churches, both large and small, in NYC that we have used for destination weddings that are available to rent if you prefer a more traditional setting for the wedding. Please don't be intimidated if you just come yourselves--we have done wonderful, beautiful weddings with all the trimmings for just a bride and a groom (and an officiant, a florist, a photographer and sometimes even a singer, an organist and a videographer!)

Feel free to be in touch if I can help you with any further questions. Good luck, Lynn from Florisan
