What exactly is a wedding planner?

Hello,

I'm not gettting married until Aug 2010 but have done numerous things all ready for the wedding. Someone had suggested to look into getting a wedding planner, however I am not sure exactly what a wedding planner does. Can some one please let me know what they (can) do before and day of the wedding? Also, how does pricing work? Do I pay a flat rate or priced based on what I ask them to help with?
