DIY Invite Instructions
Materials & where to buy
-White Invitation 7x7” with border
-Envelopes (outers only)
-Response Cards with border & envelopes
-Cardstock Paper for inserts (directions & accom)
-Paper cutter w/ lever
-Black Pocketfolds
-Glue
-Tracing Paper
-Xacto Knife
-Pink Ribbon
Instructions
*We designed, printed & assembled everything*
FH designed everything in Photoshop. We tried a lot of different designs for the invite and ultimately decided on the “C” in the background in pink (our colors are black & pink), very simple. We also played around with borders, fonts, etc for the invite and the insert cards. FH is a graphic designer so he made that part very easy.
We figured out the measurements for our Directions and Accommodations cards and used a paper cutter w/ a lever to cut, which has a ruler built in to make it easier.
After cutting all the paper we printed on everything, even the envelopes. We used the font called ZAPFINO for the envelopes, wording of our names on the invite and headings for the insert cards. For the rest of the invite wording, we used a simple font (I forget which one) in all caps… same for the direction & accom cards.
We also decided to cut tracing paper in 7x7” sheets and print our picture on there. We didn’t think the printer would take it, but it did! Some of them came out with extra blotches of ink on them, which went in the garbage, but we got them all printed eventually.
For the black pocketfolds, we didn’t want to just tie the ribbon around it to close it, but if we glued it in between the invite and pocketfold, then you couldn’t see it in the back. So we cut the slits in the back of the pocketfolds on either side for the ribbon to go through. We measured where the slits should go and made a little piece of cardboard about the size of the pocketfold in width (like a mini ruler). Then with a pen we made marks on the cardboard on either side where the slits should go (a little less than ½” in on both sides). Then I could just measure that up with the pocketfold and make little marks with pen on the pocketfold and make a line (a tad bigger than the ribbon width) for FH so he could cut the slits with the Xacto knife. Make sense?
After the slits were all cut, we cut the ribbon to size (less than 1 yard… depends on how big you want your bow). You need a good scissor that doesn’t fray the ends… we used one we happened to have in the house. Then we slid the ribbon through the slits so it showed in the back of each pocketfold.
Next we glued all the invites to the pocketfolds. This was the most tedious part b/c we had to get the invite just centered right on the pocketfold. After all were glued, we put the inserts together and put those in the pocketfold. We added the tissue paper to each and then tied a nice bow… this might have been more tedious than when we had to glue the invite to the pocketfold!! It’s really hard to make a good bow, but you just have to keep playing with it until it looks nice.
I hope this helps… anything I left out just ask!!

They are beautiful. You are very talented. I bet you wanted to rib your hair out while you were making them but they turned out great. Nice work and thanks for the instructions. I am going to keep them in mind when I am ready to do invites. I'm no where near that point yet.
