Another question about tipping? I know the rules but
just wondering what you girls are giving personally? My tipping came out to $1975.00 I just don't know how that could be. I didn't think I was being extravagant.
If you don't think this is too personal a question could you please tell me what you are tipping your vendors and what about delivery/set up people?
Thanks girls! I really need this one!

Re: Another question about tipping? I know the rules but
So in addition to the pp MD fee that I am charged by my hall, I think it is like $3pp. You are supposed to tip them an additional $2-3 per person at the end of the night

Mine didn't have a specific fee already, it sounds like your hall charges it to you so I am guessing you don't need to tip them. Check with your hall, though.

Re: Another question about tipping? I know the rules but
my hall is charging 20% service fee does that mean I have to tip the waitstaff also. Fine the maitre'd I would say $300 is about right but not sure about the wait staff

Re: Another question about tipping? I know the rules but
I was just reading this thread and I have a question.
Why would I tip the Maitr' D and the waitstaff if I'm already paying gratuity?

This is unfortunately NOT correct the 18%-20% is a SERVICE CHARGE, not a gratuity. The waitstaff don't see it. The ‘service charge’ is supposedly for things like table linens & salaries of staff like the dishwashers, etc. Incidentally, that is why New York State assesses a sales tax on it, because it’s NOT a gratuity.

When I was visiting RHs I was told by 2 different ones that the 18-20% service is to pay the salaries of the waitstaff, NOT a tip. So they will get their 50-75 bucks for being at your party doing their jobs, but unless you or your guests tip them, they will not see a tip. It happens a lot because people dont realize that.

This is entirely accurate. I worked as a waitress at two catering halls. I was paid per hour at one and per party at another. Let me tell you, $75 bucks to work a wedding may sound like a lot to some, but that's because you don't realize the staff is also there at least an hour before preparing, and at least an hour after cleaning up. (and weddings can get REALLY messy). And it doesn't compensate those servers who go above and beyond the call of duty... As such, I'm tipping everyone!

I was told the same thing by my RH - the service charge is for paying the servers - not a tip. I looked at it the same as a restaurant - you get paid to work but if you are good you deserve a tip.

Re: Another question about tipping? I know the rules but
i know this sounds awful, but I don't plan on tipping people like the band, trio, make-up, hair, or florist people. I mean I'm paying them already for their service, and may I say NONE of them were cheap.
I haven't decided what to do with the waiters and matre di, and valets yet. I mean at $185 bucks a head, this should cover it no?

Re: Another question about tipping? I know the rules but
We were told we should tip 3-5 a person for the matre d. But I see people who tip under 3- I think giving them like $700 is a lot for one person. Would it be cheap of us to tip them like $350? That would be 2.50 a person probably.

I think FH and I are going to end up doign something like this. We haven't figured everything out but it seems reasonable.
