J is 12 months old...and we have lowered the mattress 2 times to prevent her from climbing a bit. It is now at its' lowest level. She stands up in the crib by holding onto the bars. I was wondering if there is a set time to take the bumpers off.
btw, we still have her mobile hanging up as well

I think I read if she can pull herself up on the bars that it's time to take the bumpers away cause she can try to use those as a stepstool to greater heights!!

Phyl, we took the bumpers off as soon as Ryan could pull himself up to standing (last month - 8 mos.). Mainly because I was just afraid he would try climbing on them and lose his balance even more than he already does!
I also took the mobile out and lowered the crib all the way down at the same time. It's better for him, but it looks so blah now...

We still have them on. I dont see a reason to take them off... I doubt they will give him much leverage since they are not that sturdy or really bulky like a pillow... I like how they look on, and he doesnt really mess them up or tangle himself up in them or anything...

I read that once the baby can climb up, you should remove the mobile and I believe the bumpers as well.

the mobile I removed ages ago, because they can pull it and with the string, not good...
but im using my own judgement with the bumpers...

I took off the bumpers when she could pull up. Althought I are with Anna that they are flimsy, they can be piled high if they can untie any section. If you leave them be sure they are tied on well.
