I never did glass etching but thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't really impressed by the stencils the craft stores stocked, so I thought up a way to make my own. What I did was found a block type font I liked and got my sizing correct. I chose 'outline' in font format and printed it out on regular paper. When I was happy with that printout, I simply placed a piece of Scotch painter's tape over the top and ran it through the printer again, so now it was on the tape.
Next I removed the tape from the paper and placed it onto the glass item I wanted to etch. Press it secure by 'blotting' with a napkin - don't rub back and forth because it will smear the ink. Use a craft knife and cut out your letters. This is the timely part of the project. After all letters are cut apply, process and remove the etching creme following package instructions.
We already purchased gas cards for our GM but wanted a little something personal to give them. We also are getting both sets of parents coffee table photo books but thought a single frame as a gift would be nice too.

How did you get the stencil to lay correctly on the glass? Ours always curves at the edges. Did you lay each letter individually?

Re: DIY glass etching w/ pics and instructions
she used an exacto knife and cut the letters out of the tape and made her own stencil out of the tape...look at the pic of the frame in her post.....after she put the cream on and i guess it dried? she peeled the tape off

The creme I got at Michaels, its where the glass painting kits and stencils are. You leave the creme on for a few minutes and rinse it off with water, before peeling off your stencil. They sell premade reusable stencils too, if you don't want to make your own
