ddunne23 said it best!! i think it's disgusting that these guys makes tens of millions of dollars and the teachers of this country can barely afford to survive!!!!! i think there is something very wrong with a society that values a game over the welfare of our children. now that being said - it is all about supply and demand. if people weren't willing to pay the high prices of game tickets to support these guys, then it wouldn't be an issue.

I used to think that they couldn't possibly be overpaid since we live in a free economy and the market determines their value. And sports are obviously) really important to Americans...
On the other hand, I'm not so sure. When a family of 4 needs $200+ to go to a game, then someone (the players? the owners?) is being greedy!!

I do not think they are overpaid. This is a Capitalist society. The laws of supply and demand are in effect.
I do not think that their jobs are more important than our teachers, firemen, and policemen, but that is how our society is conditioned!
I also think that their careers are much shorter and therefore they need to make money while they can.

I don't think they are overpaid but then again, I may be biased since I work in the sports industry.
My feeling is that, if Julia Roberts could make $20 million for a movie that takes 3 months to shoot, why shouldn't a professional athlete who trains on a daily basis to accomplish his goals be able to make the same amount over a certain # of years withing their career.

pay these people a little less (execs and owners included) and let the fans enjoy...b/c its the fans that suffer...

supply and demand. we demand these guys and there aren't many of them, so no, i don't think they're overpaid. actually, i don't really think about it too much-I just enjoy the game!

As a total sport fanatic I would have to say that I believe that almost all sports pay players far more than they should. Some of the greatest players in the history of baseball made very little money, even by todays standards, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gerhig.
Unfortunately with the advent of free agency in baseball and then in other sports, players were able to force owners to bid against one another for their services, thereby raising their asking prices to a ridiculous level. It has hurt the game drastically and caused many of the smaller market teams (again in baseball because football is a bit different) to field less than competitive teams. The require revenue from huge TV contracts which you can't get in smaller cities.
Then you have the example of the WSUA which had to fold because they couldn't make any money and pay the players. That was a waste. Women's soccer has made huge inroads in the US and other countries but no one will pay to see them play!

ddune hit the nail on the head. There are some professions that, once upon a time, it meant something to pursue - teachers, counselors, etc. Now these jobs are sometimes paid on a lower scale than jobs we used to tke for extra cash in HS! Musicians, movie stars - all of this type of salary is way, way overdone. For what we pay to go see a concert or to see a game (except the WNBA, those prces are still reasonable) could fee a family for a month in some countries!!! I am totally all for a free-market economy, but prices can be changed by forces other than supply and demand.

jealous - no... want to make the world a better place - yes
there are other ways to make money than the entertainment/sports industry...
but I guess you just think of us as dumbasses...that don't know anything...how wrong you are...

I believe they are overpaid and I am a major sports fan. Like Chris, b4 I was a teacher I worked for MLB. I dealt with player appearances and tradeshows and such and then on top of that was a Mets ballgirl for 3 years so I saw many of these athletes up close and personal ( ).
Unfortunately the experience left me jaded. The majority of these athletes looked to the game as a chore. 'Oh we have an early arrival at the park tomorrow, I can't believe _____' or 'I'm hanging out here to avoid the flocks of fans' or 'We really need more 'off-days' in the season'. I mean it just seems that the fans were an obligation to them. It was a rare few that actually went out of their way for fans. Also many are obligated to talk at various charities, schools & such. It truly made me sad that so many children look up to these guys and their main priority is when can they get to the bar to drink and pick up women.
It also seems that 'the game' got in the way of their personal life---heaven forbid.
