my i feel so sad for him.. he looks so lost and confused.. its another case of poor parenting.. both kids come from broken homes and its so sad..

this def could be b/c of bad parenting -i'm not arguing that at all.....but i knew kids that had sex at that age - and when my sister was that age she knew kids doing it too...i mean kids i was friends with, kids from the neighborhood - none of them seemed like they came from bad homes with bad parents.....i think there are so many influences out there....just turn on the TV and its sex, sex, sex.....so i don't think every kid that experiments does it b/c they have bad parents.....i don't know, i'm scared to be a parent b/c its like everytime a kid messes up its b/c 'the parents are no good' KWIM?

i hear ya!! im scared to have kids too! if 13 year olds are having BABIES today - what are13 year old gonna be doing when i have kids? running a whoree house?!

i did family therapy for 2 years with teenagers who are in the juvinille justice system and it really does have A LOT to do with parenting... some of these parents didnt even KNOW who their kids friends were... sometimes they didnt even know WHERE their kid was at 10pm at night... CRAZY!

ohh yeah def....i totally hear you on the bad parents....but when i was kid i had a friend with great parents, ate dinner with her family every night, was in early, had a curfew, parents knew all of our friends and our friends parents, was a straight A student, went to church on sundays with her parents....ummm yeah....she was totally humping right after school.... and i remember having a lot of friends who were like that.....luckily i don't think any of them got pregnant at 13....

see that is what makes me feel so bad....but then again these two kids decided they wanted to have that baby so you can't feel sorry for them.....but for some reason you still do b/c you know they are going to miss out on a lot of things and it's just kind of sad....if you look at the flip side - say if they decided to abort the baby so they could have a chance at living their own lives people would be saying all mean crap.....so either way, what is right? what is wrong? who knows?!?!?

i absolutely agree.. the boy comes from a family of 9 and his parents are separated.. maybe poor parenting would have been a better way to put what I was thinking.. i firmly believe that 12/13/14 year olds are too premature to have sex.. and they must be lacking something at home to resort to it.. tv is a huge influence, and i don't have kids yet, but everything is all about sex and sexuality.. our surrounding and our society makes us grow up at its pace.. and we have to go with it.. but that's when parents and home end up being the force that grounds you and holds you back..

just my two cents..

It's sad that they will lose their childhood, but they made the decision, together, to have sex which resulted in pregnancy. They then both decided to keep the baby.

For every decision made in life, there are consequences.

Unprotected sex no less!!! They are old enough to know the consequences

wow 9 kids! i didn't read anything about this boy, i was just saying in general - i like to always think of things in other ways - i tend to look very into things and play devils advocate or try to come up with a bunch of scenarios

TV freaks me out - parenting freaks me out.....what scares me is that you can think you are doing a great job as a parent and you can think that your kid is an angel and they could totally be fooling you - that i know first hand....and that scares me!

There is always the option of giving the baby up for adoption. The parents of these kids now have a lot of responsibility thrown onto them.

Re: A dad at 13!?

I have a hard time with these type of things. I was a child too. At age 13 I would hear girls talking about sex, seen girls at age 14 pregnant and always thought OMG I would never be one of them, not to mention that I waited for a adult age to make such a decison (my husbad). I'm more upset when I hear about these things. I don't feel sorry for the kids, they chose to have sex and they chose to have the baby. Well maybe I do but anger overcomes it bc I just feel bad for the baby who will grow up and have to deal with how the mother raised her/him. It's too disappointing. I would be crushed if that were my son. The kid could be the baby's brother! This all make me feel

Because they have no clue. They think they can handle it, but they just don't have a clue. That's why I feels it soo important to talk with children...not just say 'No, don't do this!'. I think you need to explain why something shouldn't be one, or at least try to make them understand the consequences. Sometimes hearing no just makes someone more defiant and intent on doing whatever it is. I didn't read the article yet...going to now. This is very sad.

ETA: The article is blocked for me here. But, this boy looks like a baby himself. He looks like a verryy young 13. From what is being said here though, I agree, it is admirable that he seems to want to do the right thing.

Re: A dad at 13!?

I dont know it is hard to say if this is because of bad parenting skills or not. It is sad he is a baby just himself. I cant even imagine having a child now and he already has one at age 13.

This is my take on it:
I grew up in a strict Catholic household. Went to Catholic School my whole life where we learned sex was for procreating and not to have abortions or use birth control etc. I dont agree with abortions but I am on birth control. When I was 16 my mom found my birth control and flipped she just told me I wasnt allowed to see my bf anymore etc etc. She never really talked to me about sex she only said I shouldnt have it unless i am married and took my bcp away from me. I went back to Planned Parenthood and got some more. However, I am 23 married and still no baby. Although my mom never taught me about it I still stayed educated about what I needed to do in order ot protect myself. Unfortunately there are alot of teens out there that don't receive that information. I wish my mom had talked to me about sex and relationships even though I did not have a baby 'out of wedlock'. I think when it happens to children so young it is because parents are either against sex/condoms/bcp all together or they don't feel the need to talk to their children it's sad. Plus I think we should have sex education in schools. you know the highest statistics of STD's is for the age range of 14-24 that is ridic...14 getting the clap or herpes etc....why arent people talking to their children about this it is obviously going on!??!?!!

No one ever spoke to me, I guess I was a wise child. I think your right ppl should talk to them. I was just talking to DH how they are going to make a show on the 'American Preggo Teen' and even though I am not completely sure what it will show I do think that they will show her getting support and making it out fine when in fact many young girls don't. I think they should do a documentary of the lives of those 12-15 yr olds that have babies so kids can see what its really like. I don't think talking to kids is just enough, I think some need to see it for themselves.

Aside from the parents who are just uninvolved, I think maybe some parents just don't want to believe their children could even be thinking of such things, let alone doing them at such young ages.

I was just going to say to Catie, and the same probably goes for you, that luckily some teens happen to be very mature and responsible and make good decisions. Unfortunately, not always the case, especially if children have self-esteem issues. Sometimes I believe they are looking for what they are not getting at home.

yup exactly I think that was partly my mom's take on it as well...because I was 16 when I first had it with my bf and on birth control she was appauled that I would even think of it at that age.
