Anyone have a wedding gift check bounce? UPDATED again on 8/27

Anyone have a wedding gift check bounce? UPDATED again on 8/27

OK so we got our mail yesterday and there was a notice from our bank informing us we are being charged $10. for a check that bounced. My cousin and his wife attended the wedding and gave us $200 and their check bounced. My cousins (all older than me, all have been married for over 12 years no,, done having kids, etc.) have been very inconsiderate throughout the whole process (all of my female cousins cancelled for my shower with only a few days to go, they complained that their kids couldn't come... there would have been 51 kids at my wedding). We used to be a very close family and well, they just are self-centereed and VERY cheap. I've had it... I was always there for them and was very generous despite being a student when they all got married. Another cousin and his wife (pretty well off) gave $50. I took it more of an insult because it's not as if they don't have the money, they are just really cheap.

So much has happened over the years regarding these people that I can't even get into but I feel like I should call them on it. For years now they have been very selfishin their actions towards the rest of the family. How do you do that? So now we have to pay a $10 fee?

So should I call them and tell them the situation? I know they know but I feel like they should have to explain themselves after being 'ridiculous' for so many years.

What should I do?

TIA

I would call and tell them it bounced and you received a charge because of it. DH and I bounced a check without knowing it because of a bank problem. Our dear friends let us know and we took care of the bounced check fee the incurred on top of their gift.

NO matter how unsupportive they have been, bouncing a check is not something anyone WANTS to do

It happened to us too. We cashed it a second time and it was fine. Sometimes it is just an innocent mistake, but in your case, seeing the history of these people, I would definitely call her on it!

i agree- b/c then it affects Their credit (and since they sound so selfish, i doubt that theyd want to do anything to hurt *themselves*, ya know?)

It definately sounds like you have alot on your mind re: these people though (i remember the other posts from the shower, also), So eventhough i think the bounced check may have really been an accident, they really have let you down time and again, and i think that if its really hurting you or getting to you alot, then you Definately need to have a talk with them... you shouldnt just have to carry this by yourself

Wow!

I agree with the other ladies...i would call and be sweet as pie about the whole thing.

'I'm so embarrased to tell you this, but your check bounced!'

They sound like icky people.

We had this happen with one check. It was someone Dale knew and he winded up giving Dale extra money before it happened and then when the check bounced we were like ahhhh that is why. I know they will get a notice if it does.

I personally wound not confront the person. They know their checked bounced because they get notified from their bank. If they have any type of manners they will apologize.

I had one check bounced and the guy apologized to us down the road but never gave us anything to make up for it and it cost us $15. Kind of pissed me off, but whatever.

They will know soon enough once the negative balance shows in their account. I'm sure they will call you about it. If they don't do anything about it, I would go on w/o saying anything. I would take the high road.

I would ABSOLUTELY call them on it.

I can't believe someone could let that happen!

ETA: this happned to a friend of mine years ago and the guy claimed that someone stole his checkbook (which later on turned out to be a lie!) she never got anything from him.

It happened to us and we called them, they were in the middle of switching banks, it was an honest mistake. How embarrassing.

Re: Anyone have a wedding gift check bounce? UPDATED

UPDATED: So I called my cousin last night. My aunt answered as she is there (Basking Ridge, NJ helping taking care of his kids on almost a daily basis when she lives in Valley Stream and commutes there!!!!... that's another issue, if you only knew). I didn't want her to be embarrassed (my aunt is so sweet) so I asked to speak to her son or his wife.

My cousin's wife answered the phone and I said... 'Hi J, I'm sorry this is so embarassing for you. WE came home from our honeymoon to find a notice from our bank, your check bounced we have been charged a fee to our account.' So she says, 'Oh, D (my cousin), is out right now at a baseball game, let me take your number (She doesn't have it? ) and he'll call you back.'

She wasn't embarassed, apologetic or anything. And why does my cousin need to call me back? Does she not understand English?? I told her what happened. I always thought she was a little dense and now I have confirmation!!

Unfortunately, my other uncle called and wanted to hear all about London and our honeymoon and I could not get him off the phone. I think my cousin called back during that time and hung up on the voice mail.

I am related to some dense people.

I'd give it another day or so and then call him back.

I would not call them on it. Ususally the bank will automatically redeposit it. Either way I wouldn't go there, they know they bounced a check because the bank will notify them, so they should come to you. If they don't then you know they don't care.

The bank already tried twice while we were away.

Whatever... just makes my Christmas card list shorter.
