Best order for name change??

I haven`t gotten around to officially changing my last name yet, but will be tackling it as soon as I can figure out the best way of doing so. I`ve heard it`s best to start with having your name changed on your driver`s license, then on your social security card. Is that right? What kind of paper work do I need to bring to the DMV for the driver`s license change, or do they just take my word for it that I`m now married? Also, does anyone know what kind of paper work is involve if you and your husband owned a house before you were married? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Best order for name change??

You need your marriage license for changing most official documents. I think everyone but the passport office will accept a photocopy - they want the original but they return it. I think I did my driver's license and car registration first, then the SS#, just because it was most convenient. Don't forget things like: Medical records Insurance records (Life, Homeowners and Car(and updating benficiaries) Stocks, IRA's, 401K Health Insurance, Payroll and other work-related records IRS and State Tax Bills, Credit Cards, Bank Accounts Subscriptions I put together a form requesting the change, indicating the new and old names, and a place to fill in any account number and related info. I sent this along with bill payments, subscription renewals, etc. and it has worked to get many of those changed painlessly. For Investments Accounts and Credit Cards I called and asked what was necessary. One CC did it over the phone and another required a copy of the license. I know the name change is gettng out ther because we've only been married about 6 months and I've already started getting solicitations with those pre-printed mailing labels with my new name! As for the mortgage and house related info, I'd suggest calling the bank or mortgage holder and asking them what they need to change the records. Most people were well informed on what needed to be done for name changes, no matter who I called.
