Beyond Pizzed!

We brought Shamrock to the vet on saturday for more of his shots- they also did a stool sample for worms. We get a call yesterday saying that Shamrock has a parasite called Giardia!!!! Now when I looked this up it says he could have only gotten this from unsafe drinking water (from a well or long standing water) or from a kennel.
We paid a small fortune for him from a 'reputable breeder' and he comes to us sick!!!! I just dont know what to do- I am so mad!!

Re: Beyond Pizzed!

Im sorry about Shamrock ..

Truth is though, a lot of puppies get this, breeder or not. Both of my dogs (one I got from a breeder and one was a rescue) had it when I first got them. Its pretty common.

Good luck with the little guy .. it clears up pretty quickly.

Carey- in a way, you saying that both your dogs had it makes me feel a little better. I just felt since we paid so much for him he shouldnt have been sick.

I completely agree. I actually had an argument with the breeder saying that how could I pay so much money and you give me a sick dog. They ended up telling me they would send me money for the first vet bill. I never got the money and I just gave up. The vet did tell me its very common in puppies.

Feel better Shamrock!

Ahhh motherhood .. isnt it great. HAHA

Re: Beyond Pizzed!

Awwww feel better Shamrock!!!

I would contact the breeder for two reasons - 1 - give them the heads up that the other puppies might have the same thing and 2 - see if there is some kind of way they would be able to cover this monetarily.

I know with Potter that she said there was a 5 year guarantee...if he came back with some kind of parasite at one of the first vet visits I definitely would have called to let her know.

Re: Beyond Pizzed!

I went through it for a while in my dog too, he kept coming up positive for it in his samples and I had to keep giving him different types up medicines before they finally worked and his stool samples came back fine, so its very common in puppies.. Sorry that you are going through this

Re: Beyond Pizzed!

Irwin was on meds for this when we first adopted him. Like others said, it's very common. But then again, I adopted Irwin from North Shore and didn't PAY a breeder. I'd definitely let them know and if your dog came with any guarantees of health, your breeder should be responsible for the cost of meds.

I have to look at my paperwork to see if there is a guarantee of health.

Thanks girls- I am glad to know that it is common in puppies

Re: Beyond Pizzed!

Almost all of our friends who have dogs--from shelters and from breeders--had to deal with worms and/or parasites when they got their dogs. I remember crying hysterically when I found out Marshall had worms...then I learned it was actually pretty common!

Re: Beyond Pizzed!

It's annoying but not a big deal at all. It's VERY common. And usually a lil medicine clears it right up. My dogs didn't have it, but I know of a lot of dogs who do. We are close with our vet and he pretty much tells us like it is, so if he says it's no biggie, don't worry. He isn't 'Sick' it's just a nuisance. He'll be fine
