Book Club book choices!

Original post by Toucan311

Ok, I hope you like these. They're pretty varied! I gave a very short synopsis after each title, but if you want to look further they're all available on amazon.com.

The Virgin Blue – Tracy Chevalier

This book is about an American living in France, who is able to see things about her ancestors in the distant past through her dreams.

The Red Tent – Anita Diamante

A fictionalized version of the Biblical story of Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob, and his four wives.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn – Betty Smith

A girl, Francie, grows and matures during the depression and comes of age.

Their Eyes Were Watching God – Zora Neale Hurston

The novel follows the life and struggles of Janie, a black woman living in the south.

Good In Bed – Jennifer Weiner

Cannie struggles with her own weight and being accepted by society.

Certain Girls – Jennifer Weiner

(the sequel to Good in Bed) Cannie, the heroin from Good in Bed, deals w/the struggles of having a wayward adolescent daughter.

I voted for A Tree Grow in Brooklyn, but I would read any of them. Although I would have to read Good in Bed before I read Certain Girls.

Yeah, I thought about that.

Wow no votes for the Red Tent! Its really an awesome book. Not Bible-y at all.

I've read them all except for the first two. I'm fine with rereading any of them.

Just a suggestion: We can read the 1st one then just go down the line having these be our first 6 books.

Great choices, Heather.

I tried to pick entertaining books that weren't insulting to anyone's intelligence, and that I think we could have good discussions on.

I'd love to even host it at my house, but I know Suffolk is hard for many of you girls, so I guess online is best. But I'd be open to it if anyone was interested! Book discussion and cocktails.

So I'll take the top 2 choices and do a re-poll tomorrow to get a better idea of which book will be first.

Both awesome. Virgin blue might be my 3rd or 4th favorite book ever, after a few that I didn't post b/c I didnt think people would like them.

Great books!
I read Their Eyes Were Watching Gd a really long time ago, I think in college, and it really stuck with me.
I was shocked at how much I loved the red tent.
I can't believe I never read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn! That's one I'd love to read.
I'd love to be part of an online book club!

Yeah definitely. I jsut figured if someone didn't take charge and limit the choices it would never really happen. Maybe start a list for the 2nd book?
