Canker Sores

Does anyone suffer from canker sores? I do really, really bad and have tried everything! I can't take it. Does anyone have something that actually works to help prevent them or help heal them?

It seems as if when one goes away another one comes through and now I have 3 of them. I am in so much pain and don't want to be uncomfortable all weekend!

Re: Canker Sores

I get them all the time! For me i notice they come about with stress....the dr said there is no ryme or reason for them, but i believe its the stress. I don't think there is any cure...what i foudn to HELP is that when i feel one starting not to touch my tounge to it ever! it heals so much faster that way. Also, I use KANKA this medicine they cell at cvs...i've also used this kind that dries up to a film to make a cover too it and that helps too for me not to touch it...

You notice not touching it at all with your tongue helps. I never thought of that. I think it's hard sometimes not to touch it especially if it's the front of my mouth, but now I have to give that a shot. I will try anything at this point. Thanks. I have used everything they sell over the counter and it's only temporary relief.

Re: Canker Sores

Definitely try making a concious effort not to touch it. I always used to and I think that it makes them worse b/c when I leave them alone...they heal soooo much faster!

Re: Canker Sores

i get them too. I cut down on any citric acid foods, like tomato sauce and oranges and lemons. I also eat more yogurt. I also take a vitamin called lysine. i have not had to use kanka sore medicine at all. My dentist has given me medicine and told me not to use tooth paste with sodium lauryl sulfate (sp.?).

Re: Canker Sores

The dentist told me there is really nothing you can do for them. You just have to let time pass He did give me a special mouthwash to keep it free from germs. I took it at night and it tasted absolutely disgusting. The taste lasted so long it affected my breakfast and sometimes my lunch the next day.

Re: Canker Sores

Thanks Girls!

I take Lysine everyday, so I think I am immune to it now. I just heard that Zinc is good to take also, so I am heading to The Vitamin Shoppe after work today to pick some up. Hopefully it will help. The doctor actually prescribed 4 Valtrex to me. He said to take 2 in the morning and 2 at night, but once the sore breaks it doesn't really help much. He said as soon as I feel one coming to take them. Sometimes it does prevent them.

BTW, DH makes me hide the Valtrex bottle in the medicine cabinet, so anyone snopping in there doesn't see it. He is embarrassed I take them sometimes, b/c he doesn't want his friends thinking I have herpes...lol.

Sorry for crashing!

WElcome to my life!!!!!! I've suffered from them ever since I was little. And I never get just one, I get 2,3,4 at a time. To the point where I cant eat or speak for days. I've tried medications, OTC treatments, rinses etc. NOTHINGGGGGG has worked. Then i thought maybe I was allergic to certain foods, but my theory was wrong too.

Last year I was in a BP for FHs cousins wedding. I had 2 on my tongue and one on my cheek and my tongue and face was so swollen. I couldnt speak nor could I even function so I had to leave the wedding early.

They are the most annoying, painful things ever and I dont know what to do about them anymore

I feel your pain. I have been getting them since I was a kid and my dad's side of the family gets them. They run in the family. I am always looking to see if there is any update on cures or prevention, but nothing. I've had them non-stop the whole summer. I think I drank pink lemonade and that is was caused the last few. I used to drink OJ all the time and I can't remember the last time I drank it cause I get them. I also use Rembrandt toothpaste that helps prevent canker sores since it doesn't contain SLS. That helped when I first started to use it, but now nothing helps.

I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.

Re: Canker Sores

Kanka helps shorten healing time for me.

periodontist recommended 2 things - -
Rincinol by GUM which you swish in mouth

and she makes her own rinse 1/2 kaeopectate, 1/2 benadrl. rinse with that - - don't swallow!!! and she says you should be able to eat w/o pain. I haven't tried either of these so can't say if they work.

Re: Canker Sores

warm salt water as a mouth wash and the canker sore stuff they sell at CVS works too. the salt water should be as hot as you can handle it.
