Re: controlling families
I'm lucky enough that my DH really doesn't want to deal with his mother. He's got 2 sisters, but he's the loner, so he keeps to himself.

That sounds like my situation..he choses to be the loner because they are so controlling..I didnt know if being a loner was the best way to deal with the situation, when he tries to open the lines of communication, he just gets put down..nothing is ever good enough

Im sorry that totally stinks!!! i got really lucky in the family department too... we all have a great relationship, and even my parents/ sybllings and his parents/ sybllings all love each other too.... if you made it into a TV show, it might even be nauseating but i feel for you... i know how hard it can be to have family issues... it feels like a monkey thats always on your back

Re: controlling families
Even though I am not a newlywed, I too, have a controlling MIL. Some advice from an old married woman (12 years!), she moved away and it was the best thing for our marriage!! She told people when we first got married that if she lived by us, she would break us up!! Yes, that is the kind of woman I have to deal with. Even though she is away, we still have to deal with her every once in awhile. Luckily my dh knows how she is now and pretty much sides with me. Good Luck!
