Re: Cooking Poll
DH and I eat out almost every night. I know I should be cooking but I just don't enjoy it and I'm not that confident in my abilities. Don't worry...I read your other post and it doesn't make you any less of a wife. I have a MIL from hell also. Please FM me if you ever want to talk
I don't really cook. I mean I can cook but my DH is by far the better chef and he enjoys cooking. So he makes every meal...every day. And he is great at it so I am a lucky gal.

Don't feel bad...i don't cook at all...i mean i could if i had to but i hate it! DH does all the cooking and loves it...i'd rather be out mowing the lawn than in the kitchen!!!
LMAO Kath... I love you. You're a trip.
I don't cook much during the week-like Monday i make two or three emals ; one to eat rigth away with a day's leftovers and then the others i freeze like my tortilla casserole. My DH works over the road so he's not home all that often during the week unless he's being kept local. So its me and my two cats. I get home at 7pm from work so usually just reheat something. But i do cook on the weekends.

I just got a really good white chili recipe from there that I adapted. AWESOME. I also got an amazing recipe for boneless porchops. Mine always come out dry :( but this called for using applejuice, brown sugar and dijon mustard as a marinade and slow cooking in a pan essentially. SOOOOO good. Moist and delicious. I served with applesauce on the side and Dh devoured em.

Re: Cooking Poll
Nothing is wrong with you. I didn't start cooking til 2 weeks ago, before that my dad cooked. Now he is planning on moving so I want DD used to me cooking dinner. But I work full time, n I am tired when I get home, so I make simple meals likechicken I can throw on a grill, frozen veggies, pasta, Lipton sides, stuff like that. Also I got a slow cooker as a gift, Iplan on using that afterI move. Don't fret at all, if you and DH are cool with your arrangment for now that is all that matters.

Re: Cooking Poll
i love to cook but i get home around 8pm these days and we have a weird living situation b/c we dont really have a ktichen- just a toaster oven, a crock pot and a mic- and a mini fridge. ( trying to save for a house) cooking is a challenge.
honestly, all you need is garlic, oil, course salt and fresh cracked pepper and you can make any meal good. watch food network to pick up on a lot of cooking tips.
i've watched hours of food tv and learned so many tips to how to properly sear meat to how to saute. you learn basic techniques and you'll find all the chefs pretty much doing the same thing to food all the time.

Re: Cooking Poll
I cook everyday. I am not a great cook and I work FT so I am exhausted when I get home but I make simple meals. I marinate steak and make frozen veggie stuff like that. I can not be in a kitchen cooking for 2 hours every night. I get home at 6pm. What ever works for you and DH works for you both, DO NOT let FMIL make you feel bad for what works for you and DH. I have a son so I have to cook everynight.

Re: Cooking Poll
i try and cook everyday---but sometimes i'm just too tired...so then its leftovers.
maybe its cultural--but all the women in my family cook...its just something you do when you're hispanic. our moms teach us that you need to learn how to cook..cause well....we have to carry on the traditions of arroz con gandules, asopao, carne milanese!
if you're not used to cooking--it can be overwhelming. like someone said, check out allrecipes.com, foodnetwork.com, etc. start small and work your way up--and you could start your own food traditions!

I'm a cookaholic... I seriously think that a portion of people who insist on cooking and experimenting came from a home similar to my upbringing.... where mom HATED cooking, and we ate the same bland stuff over and over again.
I think she was like that becuase her Oma cooked for her as a kid, and was a PHENOMENAL cook.... so like you, she felt like nothing she made was like Oma's, so she was turned off.
You're in grad school, and really busy.... and learning to cook is very time consuming and strenuous.... You don't want to go near a stove becuase you come home already exhausted... Since you really miss your mom's cooking, once your schedule normalizes (you graduate), have some cooking days with your mom, where you cook with her, and learn exactly how she makes your favorite dishes... I'm sure she would be excited about passing on her skills. then you'll finally enjoy cooking and eating your meals, and you'll be able to pass your mom's skills down to future generations
