Craft Corner: Has anyone done an engagement to wedding scrapbook?

Original post by Sonicstef

I have a lot of 'stuff' that I would like to put together in a scrapbook - things like photos of the day we got engaged, photos of my shower, fabric scraps, the note from the president, our photo in the times, stuff like that...
so Im wondering if anyone has ever done anything like that before.

Im thinking of using a book like this:

Kolo Newport Album

and mimicking real scrapbook layouts in Photoshop on my PC with words and photos and spaces to glue fabric and cards to using this ink jet refill paper:

Inkjet Refills

So far I can do pages about:
- Day we got engaged
- Bridal Shower
- Bridesmaid Luncheon
- Finding 'the' dress
- Wedding Day

So I need some suggestions help on the following:

a) What else can I include? I'd like to make the book sort of like a journey from engagement to honeymoon but Im not sure what else I can put in there.

b) I need some elegant layouts I can use as inspiration, so please post if you have done one or have seen one.

Susan...ive been wavering back and forth between buying the inkjet paper from Kolo (very expensive) and having Kinkos print directly on there or just having Kinkos print out a sheet and mounting it on regular Kolo scrapbook paper. I think I will probably do the latter b/c its easier and a lot cheaper. What do you think?

So far Ive completed 2 pages...proposal and engagement photos....i have bridal shower next but it seems like a big jump in time but I guess thats okay.

Im going to finish the whole book of layouts before I decide what to do about the printing/binding.

Metphan: You may want to try The Learning Annex..they seem to have a class on everything.

Cool.
I'm always worried that the quality of the print won't be good enough.
You just scanned the images in?
What dpi are you using?

Are those last batch of pics also digital scrapbook pages?

I have a scrapbooking magazine, but it all looks so complicated.
It would make a lot of sense to do it on the computer!

these are so fabulous...i never knew that scrapebooking was so cool!! whenever I walk into that section of Michaels...I feel like I am in a 2nd grade girls bedroom...

thanks for showing me the error in my way!! I'm definitely going to do something like this when I get a little time off...

I bought a few scrapping magazines and wow - I had no idea all this was out there. It's very overwhelming though. I could see it being a whole lot easier working on the computer.
Also, I don't have a TON of patience, so when I find the time to make my book, I don't think it will have the detail that some of the best have.....

Stef - I was thinking about each page for the album too - mine will have a big gap in time between pages as well.
For me, I was thinking of 1 page each for our enagement story and e- party, which was from 12/20 -5/01, and then jump to my bridal shower in 8/02, then b-party, RD and smaller details leading up to the big day. The smaller details would be 1 page each for the bridal party, etc.

The photos are all scanned in. Im using a 300 dpi when I scan so that SHOULD be okay.

A while back I did a photo collage for my friend and had it printed at Kinkos and it looked fabulous! I was really shocked how professional it all looked when you printed it out on good paper and had an overly expensive printer working in your favor.

Almost all of the layouts I posted (all of the last few pages, most of the first few) are computer only layouts. Honestly, the paper scrapbook stuff seems so much more complicated to get it to look elegant since Im not a fan of cutouts and stuff like that. Plus, its really expensive. The computer stuff is 100% free until you print, and at least you know exactly what its going to look like without spending a dime!

Since my engagement was so long, i guess the gaps in time are just going to have to do. I'd like to make a page about finding 'the dress' but how do I do that? There isnt a great story behind it. I figure I will do all the pages that I know I want now and maybe when Im done I will find some other topics ;D

Stef Im sure your pages look beautiful!!! Just one word of advice, I have read that over time the Ink Jet ink will fade. Not in a year or 2, Im talking about 10-15-20 years from now. Im assuming that you are making this so that you can keep it for a long time, right? So just be aware that you might lose some of your fatastic work in years to come. Also, make sure the paper that you are printing out on is acid and ligin free. That will also hope preserve the pages longer.

Thanks Lisa...actually Im going to have the stuff printed using a laser printer if I go with Kinkos..but Im okay with it fading in 15 years. Im going to save it on a CD so I have the digital files :D

Stef- Maybe for your page on finding the dress, you can use the picture of it on the model, the picture of you with the veil when it came in and all that good stuff.

Stef, for picking the bridal dress, what if you put a whole bunch of small digi pictures of dresses that you liked from online (i.e. the ones you were considering and then in the middle of the page put your own dress, or a few pictures of the dress overlapping each other on the corners so that they would take the focal point of the page.

Or you can also do a competition elimination way...

I.e. place a large array of the dresses on the left side of the page and then have the dresses being narrowed to a few under consideration, and then the 'one'!!!

If you can find logos online of some of the bridal shops, you can also interlace them with the 'potential' dresses, to show how much search it involved.

I don't know how you went about dress shopping, but just a few thoughts.

300 dpi.
You'll have to let me know how it prints.
I was playing around last night and I did a 10x10 at 600 dpi...my computer was moving WAY SLOW...**** pc. Maybe I'll have to invest in a MAC. LOL.

I dont own a Mac and it pretty good...not super fast but certainly not noticeable slower than any other program.

I actually do my scrap book by hand with paper, spray glue, etc. With the findings they have these days, the books don't have to look cheesy, but can look very elegant. It all has to do with the paper used and the relationships of the colors- and of course the way you lay out the page. I can make many of the layout's Stef posted by hand with vellum overlays, etc.

I'm a big fan of doing things the simple way- by hand- I look @ a computer enough at work.. when I get home it's all about glue, scissors, etc.

Here's my first attempt:

I was thinking I'd do one with the days events and the moments that stuck out the most.
I have a lot of shower pics too, but the resolution isn't too good...

This computer is old.
I definately need a faster one. Whether it be MAC or PC.
I'll try working on a page at 300dpi and see if it makes a difference.

That looks great!!

I want to do my professional album with a digital layout but I dont want to get into that too deeply until I know my photographer can get it produced professionally.

Susan, you did a GREAT job, LOVE it!

Thanks.
That's a good idea Stef.
I'm paying a lot of extra $$ to get all those sequenced shots in like that

Susan- that is a great job!

I wish I had time to play more with this stuff, plus the talent. I am going to need to start.

Re: Craft Corner: Has anyone done an engagement to wedding scrapbook?

I'm going to print these two out at Kinko's and see how it goes. I figure if it looks okay, my parents might prefer a digi-album/scrapbook, instead of a 'real' album...then again, I'd worry about how 'colrfast' the ink-jet would be...
Either way, it's a nice way to archive some of these proofs:

I can't decide which fonts I want to use.
