Re: Privacy issues and crossed boundries!!
I don't understand why they need that information at all!I think she should speak with the heads of the departments and ask WHY that information needs to be disclosed. I can't think of any situation where that's necessary.
How uncomfortable!

Yes, Megan, that's correct, and yes, I did tell her to go to the dean!!! But that private info is not the only stuff the Prof. wanted!!!!
Debi is a Guidance Counselor candidate, and I can understand perhaps, helping these potential school counselors, to resolve anything from their past, that might help them to be a more effective counselor, but I think there have been lines crossed!!!! Mary MOB

Re: Privacy issues and crossed boundries!!
Ladies, I appreciate your comments; I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has experienced this, what they did about it, and the results. I think stuff like this can be very intimidating to a student. Right now I'd like to have a 'word' with these people, but of course, I won't, because then, I'd crossing my Daughter's boundaries!! I'm a licensed social worker who went through grad school - never once was I asked about any history - family, psychological or sexual - that is def not a screening tool for that type of profession.

Re: Privacy issues and crossed boundries!!
In grad school we've discussed these issues but students weren't required to divulge such personal information. If we're filling out a form for some reason then typically the professor will ask us to make up something to pretend we are the client. They will then use the information collected in lab or something. In my 4 years in grad school I've never been realistically asked these questions. Do you happen to know if other teachers teaching the same course asked?

Adriana, thanks for that info!!! I just called Debi, and left a message; I told her the comments on this topic. I know Debi is feeling that there are lines being crossed too, but does not know what to do about yet. Mary MOB

Student Affairs or the Dean needs to be called. This sounds all sorts of wrong.

Re: Privacy issues and crossed boundaries!!
Hmmm, was this for a research study? My husband is a psych professor, and his students are required to participate in several research studies a semester. The students are always told what the research study will require ahead of time (they get to pick and choose which studies they want to be a part of and which ones they don't want to do), and all of the work is 100% confidential. DH's studies often times have to do with pain and rejection, I know how many forms students have to fill out and verbal agreements they have to answer in order to know that the students fully understand what they are participating in!

Also, if I am wrong about my assumption (which I very well can be!), Student Affairs would NOT be the ones you would call. The head of the dept. for whatever class it is has to be called first; Student Affairs would only be able to direct you to that person as a first step. This is coming from someone that works in Student Affairs

Re: Privacy issues and crossed boundaries!!
Ladies, I thank you for your input, and definitely will share your thoughts with Debi!! Laura, I'm not sure under what heading, falls the need for each student's sexual history, to be given, but the family medical history falls under what the college wants vs. a Professor. However, the students did have one Prof. asking them to divulge family medical/psychological history, and how it affected them, for a class assignment. Mary MOB

Whoa. I haven't been in college in 5 years, but I worked closely with administration and that kind of questioning is NOT cool.

Re: Privacy issues and crossed boundaries!!
There are a lot of potential medical privacy and HIPAA rules that could apply with providing medical information. I would definitely find out the necessity for such information first and also make sure that they comply with privacy requirements if your daughter does choose to provide that information.Welcome New Vendors
