DF and I want to take his mother's surname after the wedding. How do we do this?
DF and I both plan on changing our last names to his mother's surname after we marry. This is important to us since there are no males to carry on the family name. I've been trying to figure out if we have to go to court to do this but I'm finding conflicting info. I've heard that we can just bring our marriage license to the SS office and we will be entitled to change both of our last names since the license takes the place of a court order. I've also heard that unless the new name is a combination of two current or former surnames we must go to court. Does anyone know what the process for this kind of name change is?? Thanks!

When we went for our marriage license, we were told that the last name had to be either of our current last names or a hyphenated version of those names. If we wanted to change it to anything else, we had to go to court.

I know that one of the girls on here (SoontobemrsCali) husband changed his name to his mothers last name prior to the wedding, and then she just took it via the marriage license.Your DH can do that- change it officially now and then you can take it when you fill out the wedding paperwork

i've never known anyone to do this but, on the NYC marriage license website it states that you can change your name to something else and it will be legal. You don't have to take either name you currently have right now. You can even create your own new name with the letters of both of your last names combined.Whether or not they will be able to do this for you at the time they issue your marriage license or not, i don't know. If it does require you to go to court, then i would say to have your FH change his name now so that when the time comes to issue your marriage license, it will be an easier transition
