did anyone else have a difficult time getting used to your new last name?
I'm having trouble adjusting. I'm okay with changing my name, but it still feels weird.
I think it will be better once the name change is processed at work and with the bar association b/c then I won't be using my maiden name at all... but in the interim, it's sort of surreal.
ETA - I think part of my problem is that I went from a VERY simple, 2-syllable last name to a 5 syllable Italian last name that no one can pronounce. Everyone in DH's family pronounces it differently! (Seriously! They even leave out at least one syllable when they say it)

OMG that's too funny that some of Todd's family can't even pronounce it!! I have the opposite problem from you, I went from my maiden name that everyone had a problem pronouncing (they were all scared of the Z!!!! to Johnson.....very easy to pronounce. But my problem is now I don't feel like I have a unique name anymore. And everyone that has my old last name is literally related to me! I just feel like I don't have that connection anymore (even though I obviously still do!). My maiden name is german, and even though my new married name is too, Johnson is not really known as a german name anymore b/c it's so common, I guess I just feel disappointed that it doesn't really have an identity to me. Not that that is a huge deal, but my new name just sounds fake to me!!

I'm the total opposite Kara... Went from an unpronouncable Italian last name to a 2 syllable English name
Even though I'm completely done switching my name in all my legal documents, I feel like I'm faking it
I don't have to SAY my name out loud too often so when I do, it does still seem strange! And when our friends refer to me as Mrs. Barton I just giggle
We'll eventually get used to it, we'll only be using this new name for... THE REST OF OUR LIVES!!!!!

I know, its crazy when you think about it... I feel weird that my last name isn't what it was anymore... but thinking about it.. my mother has been married longer than she had her maiden name... so EVENTUALLY I will have this new name longer than I've been a [maiden name]..
so weird. HUH.. and the men have to do NOTHING.

its so weird. i am def still not used to it...the switching ethnicities thing is surreal too. i went from a hard to pronounce italian name to a simple irish one. i felt some of that loss of identity/connection as well. im hoping that it passes, and reminding myself from time to time that a name is just a name, and your new one does kind of represent the new you...the one youve just joined with your husband. i dunno. anyway, i am glad we have this forum to talk about it.

Everyone with my new name is either related to my DH, in the mafia, or a former Yankees player.

Please, even with a 5-syllable Italian last name, my DH is still only 1/4 Italian, has red hair, fair skin, and blue eyes!
Of course, the red hair does come from the Italian part of his family... but he doesn't look Italian. After we met and he told me his last name, I nearly died. I was expecting 'Quinn' or 'Murphy' or 'O'Connor'
I have had a WASP last name my entire life (despite being 100% Irish) b/c my dad's family had to change their name to get jobs when they came to the US. My last name is actually a made up version of what should be our family name - Minogue.

yea after meeting Todd I would have totally thought he was irish, or english even......he didn't look not one bit italian!!
what an interesting story on your last name!! My maiden name was originally spelled differently- Zeigerst (which sounds more german) but my dad took out a few letters....not too sure why!!

Helen - he's 1/4 Italian, 1/4 Irish, 1/4 Welsh, and 1/4 Mennonite (as in AMISH!). His grandfather left the Amish (scandal part 1) and married an Irish girl (even BIGGER scandal!)

I went from a simple last name that was a compound word to a name that everyone in DHs family pronounces differently as well. I asked DH once the right way to say it and he didn't answer me - I seriously think he doesn't know!
It's been about 10 months and it's still weird! I have a lot of interaction with people outside my company in my job and I usually just say this is Alison from 'Company Name' and don't say my last name because it feels weird.

Re: did anyone else have a difficult time getting used to your new last name?
i was used to my last name because vendors used to call me mrs...[and my married name] before i got married!
i love my married name alot more than my original, but i still have some credit cards that are in my maiden name that 1-im too lazy to change and 2-i dont want to totally forget what i came from....i dunno. It's a pain in the azz sometimes because im never sure what name to sign on my credit card recepit!
but its all good.
my mother in law ROLLS HER EYES whenever her father [me & dh's grandfather] call me Mrs...[and my married name!] oooooohhh maybe a touched a nerve!!!

I LOVE it I'm very used to it because I'm called by my married name all day long being a teacher. It's so cute when they call me Miss C---- first, then they correct themselves. Some kids still haven't made the switch. I answer to both!

I didn't say I disliked it -- if I disliked it, I'd use my maiden name.
I just said it doesn't feel NATURAL yet to use it. It is taking some getting used to...
