Did you cash the checks you received before sending the thank yous
I still do not have my thank you notes from the stationary lady. I did not like the proofs. So I am meeting with her today to change the font. Can we cash the checks we got as wedding gifts before I send thank you notes? We want to make an offer on a house.....

Most people cash them immediately after the wedding - which is what we did.

Ok - we just got back from our HM a week ago. So I could deposit them and not be horrible. I want to get the thank yous out by mid October. And that is ok?

Re: Did you cash the checks you received before sending the thank yous
I did the wrong thing. I received checks 2 months BEFORE the wedding, in RSVPs. I also saved the checks that we received AT the wedding for another 4 weeks. So, some people had to wait 3 months for me to cash their checks.
I just remember my mom saying that when she got married, she cashed the checks a few days later and people made comments to my grandma like 'wow, your daughter didn't even wait for the ink to dry before she ran to the bank'
So, I wanted to make sure no one said that about me. But, in retrospect, I should have cashed those checks sooner.

Re: Did you cash the checks you received before sending the thank yous
DH and I meant to cash them right after our HM but we were so busy, we only got around to it a month after our wedding and people began to ask us if we received their checks or not. So I think your guests expect you to cash them right away.. Im still working on our TYs.

Umm, YEAH. We did it the day after the wedding, before leaving for the HM. Thats how we found out people were giving us rubber checks left and right (bounce, bounce, bounce!)People dont expect wedding TY's right away. The rule is that you have one year to send them out. Lots of people have to wait for TY's from their photographers. And noone would expect you to hold on to all the checks for weeks. Cash away!

Re: Did you cash the checks you received before sending the thank yous
I cashed the checks the week after the wedding. My cousin got married in July and didnt cash the checks for 6 weeks. I was wondering if she had lost the card...or the check. I thought it was strange to wait so long. I know other people who went to the wedding complained that they wanted the money out of the account so they didnt have to worry about bouncing the check.

Guests have 1 year to give a gift.
The rule on thank you's is 1-3 months after receiving the gift AT the wedding.
2 weeks for gifts received before or after the wedding.

Re: Did you cash the checks you received before sending the thank yous
we did it the day after our wedding. I think the longer u wait the more time the checks have a chance to bounce. if u wait to long people may change banks or assume u cashed them leaving insufficient funds for u to pay and them to pay. I would cash them. By the way IRS I LOVE your bouquet....who did u use? its gorgeous!

yes yes YES they will
DH and I were trying to not cash ours until we opened a joint account and with our summer schedules, we never had a day off together...so we put it off and put it off. And then people started to call. And they started to call our parents. And it was just a bad situation - I don't really get why (and I don't buy the bouncing a check thing. If you write a check, you deduct it from your account at that time, not at the time it is cashed, but whatever) but there was much uproar over the checks not being cashed. But we really didn't want the money in our checking account but we ended up doing that anyway because I was tired of the inquiries about why we weren't cashing the checks.

We had my sister deposit them the day we left for our HM. We were afraid they would get lost.

I honestly think there are a LOT of people out there who don't balance their checkbook and just go by what is on the bank statement or ATM receipt. I think the way you do, but I think some people just go by whatever balance is on their ATM statement and knowing they have a large outstanding checks wigs them out
WE cashed them when we got back from the HM, so I guess it was a week and a half to 2 weeks after the wedding. Thank yous went later.

Re: Did you cash the checks you received before sending the thank yous
We set up a joint account about a month before the wedding. We went straight from the hotel to the bank the morning after our wedding. I didn't want us holding onto the checks and, more importantly, the cash for a minute longer than we had to.I sent the TYs less than two months after the wedding.

Re: Did you cash the checks you received before sending the thank yous
why wouldn't you cash them right away??? We left the next morning but left the checks with my dad after we went through them the night of the wedding we made a list of what everyone gave while we opened the gifts just so we could look back ya know? and for people who were really really extra beyond generous we could acknowledge that!! lol I didn't want them sitting around while we were gone and i HATE when i give people checks and they don't cash them forever--i give a lot of AMEX gift checks for this reason---it drives me INSANE to have outstanding checks
