Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

We received a demitass set. Apparently you can drink coffee from it. I had no clue what it was and thought it was a tea set when I opened it up. Needless to say, it's in it's box at my mom's house, where it will stay until I get a china cabinet one day - then maybe I'll display it.

Or sell it at a garage sale!

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

I forgot that we also received a whole slew of duck themed things for our bathroom. Now the people who got this for me know that I love ducks, but this was a little over the top.

Duck soap dish, duck towels, duck bath mat, bright yellow toilet bowl covers, duck shower curtain and clips. . . the works! I returned most of it (I kept the bath mat cause it was cute) and got what we registered for.

actually, i wouldn't be surprised if it was a regift.... they got us a wedding memories book for our engagement, and it was dirty, AND had a cross on it (DH is Jewish, why would we want something with a cross?) This couple is known to be tacky gift givers!

(and they got married a couple years ago)

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

Don't want to sound ungrateful either, but for my shower there were two things I REALLY wanted from my registry and I got items similar to them but of a much less quality and different features. I picked out the things for a reason, so I was a little disappointed. I also got this guardian angel doll that plays amazing grace that my friends mother gave me She says to 'protect me.' Then she said 'you don't have to go through with this you know, you can back out.' I look at it on the shelf and I know the thing wasn't cheap, but I get upset remembering what she said. Ugh! That's a whole other story.

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

The strange items I got for my wedding:

My dad's company is European, so a lot of his co-workers are from Europe. I guess they don't believe in giving monetary gifts, so they all brought physical gifts to the wedding.

From one person, I got a serving tray, 2 cups, a tea kettle and fabric napkins with pictures of ugly cows and I guess a milkmaid of some sort. The colors were black and yellow and I have never seen anything like this. It came from some store in Europe, so I couldn't even exchange it for something else. It doesn't match a thing we have and honestly, it is not my taste (or anyone else's for that matter). We sold it on eBay. I hated to do it, but what else was I supposed to do?

From another person, I got this huge (and I mean huge - you could probably bathe a baby in it) crystal bowl. The thing weighs like 15 pounds! It's pretty, but too large to put anywhere. I don't know why someone would carry such a large item like that to a wedding. The box it came it was so big, DH and I were wondering what was inside of it all night. I couldn't even lift it. I still have it, but unfortunately it's in our spare bedroom. It's too big to put on a table. I don't know what else to do with it.

I think that was it for wacky gifts. For my shower I pretty much got things on my registry and other pratical items.

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

Oh yeah, I forgot that I got this set of 4 wine glasses and they were each a different color...well I dropped the box and one broke so I went to bring it back and say its broken and I don't want it and the sales person looks at me and says 'oh I'm sorry, you can't return this, it was a promotional item from the cosmectics department' So my step father's aunt got these as a gift from the cosmectics department and gave them to me...that was not her only gift, the aunt, her daughther and grand daughter gave me those glasses and a blender (a free gift and a $50 blender from 3 people) Are you kidding me????

Why why why do people by you things that aren't on your registry?? Grrrr.....

Because they are either shopping from the clearance rack, or they are regifting items!

I got a couple of things like that. All I know is, 5 crystals bowls are too many. And, I am definitely keeping the 2 that I registered for...

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

The worst was we got a gift at the wedding. It was a Mikasa Wine Decanter, 2 toasting flutes and a frame. All not my taste. I went to the outlet where she claimed she 'bought' them.

Needless to say thw Wine Decanter was worht $16, Frame $5 and the toasting flutes were worth a WHOPPING $3 (for both not per)

She is divorced and I have a feeling they came out of her collection

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

Wow - and i thought we got some crazy gifts - you all take the cake! And speaking of cake, we got a waterford 'bridal knife.' We were given this after the wedding so it's not as if the giver thought we could use it to cut the cake. What exactly does one do with this?

registry people.... it's all about the registry!

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

I'm cracking up here, the gifts you guys got is really hilarious!!!

However, I guess it's the thought that counts. That's why when it comes to expectations of gifts, you can't have it too high, b/c if I've learned nothing else, people are going to do what they want regardless of what you say. Sometimes it's money issues, other times it's people just doing what they want, it's kind of hit or miss!

I have some friends who got married several years ago and they had 350 guests and only got $3500 in total (which sucks for that many people) and a bunch of useless gifts from guests! They were totally devastated b/c they didn't think they would get that little in cash! This goes to show, when you plan your wedding, don't plan it on the merit of how many gifts of r$$ you will receive, but on what you can afford!

Thanks for the laughs!

Re: Did you get any strange gifts that WEREN'T on your registry?

i wish i had a picture of one of ours. It was a belated shower gift (that i got the night of the rehearsal dinner, Okaaaay) from my dad's girlfriend.
i don't know why she missed the shower-which was a month and a half prior to wedding, but we aren't close, so I really didn't care if she was there or not (not to be mean). I think she had good intentions, but it is this bronze sculpture thingy that is supposed to be a couple embracing or something. it could kind of give you nightmares if you look at it too much, though. Probably nice to some people, just NOT our style.

She gave it to us still in the mail packaging (which really didn't matter to us, but my cousin made a comment), but she was so impressed with herself, DH & I acted very grateful so she wouldn't feel bad.

The best was when we opened it, someone said 'is it chocolate?', because it is a dark brown color. I don't know who said it, but I had to keep from laughing.

All i know is that at the first yard sale we have - we'll have one hell of a conversation piece to attract people in with.
