I know that no one makes the full amount back and the general rule of thumb is that if you make back what you spent on catering that you did well...
My DH and I paid for our WHOLE wedding ourselves...so my mom was overly generous with her gift...including that, we ended up making back more than what we spent on:
Catering Band Flowers Photog
Once you include all the little things of course we didn't actually 'make' anything but in conversation with a friend the other day, I realized how lucky we were. She had a 100 person wedding out on the North Fork and only made back around 9k. I would have died if we got 9k in gifts. We literally spent every last cent we had before the wedding and its nice to have something to pay bills with now! I can't imagine if I was in her situation

Re: Did you make your money back?
We made back the hall and the flowers.
DH and I paid for everything but, my mom did buy my dress. Some people did surprise us in a good way as others totally screwed us. I paid lost out on 1,000 of 10 no shows and some said they were giving that back to us..... well where the hellll is it? Some people are unreal.

Re: Did you make your money back?
I know this is going to cause a stink and probably unnecessary drama, but all these posts about money really upsets me. I really don't understand why everyone is so upset about not getting 'enough' money in cards from people or no gifts at all. My MIL didn't give us a gift, 3 people in our bridal party didn't give us gifts and 2 guests didn't give us gifts. We had couples give us $50 or just $100 and we were paying $160 a head with tax. Almost every single person I invited who didn't show up didn't give us anything. I even had one of my cousin's steal the money her father gave us for a gift. But I DON'T CARE. Because at the end of the day what is more important to me is that my wedding was the best day of my life and it took all those people there to make it such a great day. Getting angry with people for not giving us something is pointless and would ruin my relationship with them, and my relationship is more important than something material or trying to one-up them.
My mother paid for the hall and a few extra things, and we paid for a bunch of things too. We didn't make back all the money we spent, let along our entire wedding costs. But again, who cares. My real gift was DH, not $10,000.
I know there is such a thing as 'etiquette' and proper rules for giving presents, but most people who are not part of our generation don't get that. My mother and aunts had no idea about that rule, and they all have daughters who are getting married in the next couple of years.
All of this on top of the fact that a lot of people are struggling right now because of the economy. People are losing their jobs, getting evicted, and can barely pay their bills. And this is all anyone cares about? The fact that you were lucky enough to afford to throw a lavish party for yourself and people didn't give you a present? Honestly, it really disappoints me that everyone is that caught up in something so superficial.

We paid for the entire wedding ourselves....we did not make much back of what we spent....but I would spend it all over in a heartbeat, it was the best day of my life and worth every penny IMO!!!!!!!
