My one year anniversary is coming up and I'm thinking back at all the people that said 'the first year is the hardest'. We had some tough times since we didn't live together, but worked through them.
Any thoughts about having to 'work at your marriage'?

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
I have only been married for 39 days and it can be a piece of work. We lived together before, so to us being married now the only change was me changing my name. But some days I wanna choke him, but I can't. Some days I would love to just get up and leave when I get mad, but I cant do that either. There are good days and bad. when you go through the bad ones, just remember why you married him in the first place Nobody is perfect, no marraige is perfect.:

well so far i dont find it hard. i have only been married for a little over 3 months but we have lived together for almost 4 years now! we know each others pet peeves and even though it seems like sometimes he does things that he knows bothers me just to piss me off but i over react a lot!! and we know this stuff about each other already so it has been normal. not much has changed for us since the wedding! we are who we are! everyone said ohhh boyyy to DH cuz he likes to ride his motorcycle alot so they said that as soon as the ring went on that i`d have total control of that but i dont want to be 'that wife' ya know!! i still like to do my own thing too!!! not that i dont think it will have its hard times! like right now DH is gone for 4 months and thats going to be tough but you do what you need to to get by!
I am in a very similar situation. We have been married almost 6 months but have lived together over 3 years.
For the girls living with them now. the first year is a struggle when you live with someone because you are adjusting to each other's lifestyles and littke nick nacks. As long as you are PATIENT and COMPROMISE you will be good. Remember to pick and choose your battles.

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
after a year i feel like it hasn't been 'hard' at all for us, but a year isn't a long time and im sure as all couples we'll have ups and downs, thats just life. i do believe that marriage is work, meaning that it is something you need to/should continually tend to and put alot of care into.

I think relationships are hard work in general Married or not Married.
If it was not hard work than it would not be worth it I have learned in life anything that just comes easy has no reward. Ofcourse everything in moderation.
On a side note I think that being single is hard work too.
The grass is not always greener regardless - life is what you make of it.

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
I have to say Yes that marriage is hard and when people told me the 1st year was going to be the hardest i never believed them but they were very right. were on;y married 3 months 3 days ago.
Dh and i are young we did not live together before getting married (he would spend a few days here and there but not be here 24/7) That was the hardest adjustment. we both lived at home before getting married and had our moms doing laundry and cleaning so we both didnt know what we were getting in to.. we knew what to expect but never thought it would be what it is. im VERY VERY greatful to have a husband who cleans and will do the dishes and laundry with out being asked. I tend to be the piggy so its nice to not get yelled at. i do the cooking and other cleaning. so it works for us.. but we both were just saying that we cant believe how much work it is being married... not even so much work on the marriage part thats the easy stuff but work like being self sufficiant (i know that may sound silly to some of you but for us its real becuase its the first time for the both of us) Do i think it owuld have been easier if we lived together before getting married.. absolutely would i trade what i have NOT IN A MILLION years. The good times def. outweigh the bad
we also live in a small apartment in my parents house so that is a hugeadjustment for him and myself as well... not as much privacy as i would like but i know its for the better to be here for a while.
and i think what tilde said hit the nail on the head.. i need to stop compairing US to other couples. Thats what starts the fights! I never thought about it that way but now that you said it thats IT!
and Tilde.. you and anthony can compare yourselves to us we curse at each other so much it sounds horrible to an outsider but to us its hysterical! but we also know when its a joke and were kidding and when sh!ts hitting the fan and its serious! everyone needs a little fun in their marriage!

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
I was just talking about 'marriage is work' with DH...and I said that to me it is like volunteering...yes, it requires some effort, but it is an effort you gladly put forth and give freely because the you enjoy it and rewards are worth it.
I really don't feel like my marriage is 'work'...my Dh and i have a great partnership and work as a team to support and help each other...which is probably why we are still together after 7 years..at least 6 of them spent living together. I will say the first couple months when we moved in together weren't all roses and romance...haha...as we figured out who would do what and I got used to socks on the floor and toothpaste all over the sink...but learning to adjust is half the battle and why i would recommend living together first.

I have no idea what you ladies are talking about...there is nothing difficult about marriage. It is especially not difficult when i cook a huge dinner, do all the dishes and put them all away then turn around and notice DH used a spoon and it is now sitting in my clean sink....festering.

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
For us I'd say the first six months was a little difficult. We didn't live together before marriage so it took some time to figure out who would do what responsibilities and what we'd share....things seem more laid back now that I've learned what what we can compromise on and what to just let go, because some things men will never learn (like putting down the toilet seat or changing the roll when it's empty).
We've gotten used to our routine...what nights I cook and don't cook, what days he's a slob and yet he'll clean up on Saturdays when I'm at work and he's home. Now that we know what to expect from each other there's less conflict.
What I think is more work is keeping the romance going...sure we don't need to cuddle all the time or we'll opt to save our money and watch tv instead of going on dates...but I think it's important in any relationship or marriage to not let the romance take too much of a back seat. You gotta keep the flame burning.

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
Well, we have only been married for 25 days, but so far, so good!
We have an odd situation b/c DH works 4 nights a week, so we only see each other 3 nights a week, which really stinks, but it's nothing we didn't know getting into this. It's hard for me to motivate myself to go home from work and cook when I know it's really only for me! I have been trying, though! He is really pretty good about washing dishes and doing laundry - he lived on his own for years so he got used to it. THAT being said... he is NOT clean generally, like he will leave his socks wherever, or doesn't care that there's dog drool on the arm of the couch I am the neat freak running around cleaning things, but again, we knew this getting into our marriage!
I definitely agree that it takes work... I guess we just have things a hair easier since we never see each other... but, if absence makes the heart grow fonder, than we will always be so in love

Whenever I see that lone dirty utensil in my glistening sink, I hear the theme music from Pyscho. One day DH WILL have a dirty fork impaled in his arm.

Yes, that is in fact better than the Barney theme song that pops into my head 'clean up clean up everybody everywhere. clean up clean up everybody do your share.' I mean my two year old nephew cleans up when he hears that song, how come dh doesnt get it? Maybe the theme from psycho will be more effective.

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
i have to say - maybe it is because i have had a lot of other 'hard' times happen in my life but it has been one of the easiest things. i never think of it as something i had to endure or go through - it has always been a blessing and something that helped me endure other tough times. i'm very lucky - we don't 'work' at it to get it that way as much as the way we are to each other creates all of the positive outcomes.

You don't marry one person; you marry three: the person you think they are, the person they are, and the person they are going to become as a result of being married to you.

Re: Do you agree Marriage is Hard
I think the 1st year living together was hard, but not the first year of marriage.....We have ups and downs, but every relationship does. I can honestly say the only difference is I have a German last name instead of a Polish one
