Re: do you believe in slapping or spanking a child as a form of discipline?

Hmm...you can tell how far away I am from motherhood b/c haven't really thought about it.
Both DH and I got spanked as children, no harm done and I think we grew up to be pretty respectful people.
I can recall at least once that I got whacked across the face by my mom (yes, lastresort, if you read this, my momma isn't always so sweet ) BUT I wasn't a young child, I was a snot-nosed teenager that probably said something obxnious and rude.
I'd like to say 'no, do everything else to avoid spanking' but in all honestly, that logic will probably go out the window when I'm dealing with an out of control child. So yes, I 'imagine' I would only 'spank'--not slap.

I had to know that! Our moms grew up together! Same here with me. I was spanked on occasion or whacked with the hair brush when I was screaming getting my hair brushed but when I was a 12-15 year old little b!tch, my mom did not hold back. LOL... I turned out okay though...therapy was limited...LOL

Speaking of hair, my mom was really big on hair pulling, but I feel like my brother was more likely to have his hair pulled. He was a little more rambunctious than I was....even his kindergarten teacher (Mrs. Woods, remember her?) would pull his hair. Can't get away w/that nowadays.

Re: do you believe in slapping or spanking a child as a form of discipline?

I'm a pre-school teacher. I do administration part time and teaching part time. It is usually best to try to deal with the situation before it escalates to the point of spanking. After a while, you know what a kid's triggers are and you work with the kid on how to deal with them. I'm also a big fan of trying to make the punishment fit the crime (e.g. if you dump those toys all over the floor, you are going to have to clean them up).

That being said, there are sometimes extreme situations that may call for a swat on the behind. The only time, I've ever spanked a child was years ago when my younger sister was babysitting our 3 year old nephew. He was having a tantrum and trying to bite her on her face. I swatted his behind to get him to stop. I told his mom, my other sister about it, and she was fine with it. Made me feel like hell, though.
