Do you call your MIL Mom?

My MIL joked that she doesn't want to be referred to as mother in law, she just wants to be called Mom. And I still call her by her first name when I talk to her.

I don't think she's that serious about it, but I'm wondering, am I being rude? I just can't get used to calling anyone else Mom other than my own.

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

I call mine Mom now that we are married...she loves it...and i think it's kind of special to do, but only if it feels right...i mean i love my own mom very much & am very close to her also...to me i don't feel like it takes away from that relationship by calling MIL mom but that is JMO and how i feel about it....i now some people feel different.

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

I call my MIL by her first name, I feel weird doing that and would rather call her by her last name so I mostly just start talking and hope she listens. When we send her cards we write mom but DH signs the cards as well and it would be weird if he called her Mary plus I can't exactly address the card to Umm so it's your birthday.

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

i'm being honest when i say that i try to avoid situations as to what to call her...

when she calls - i'll just say hi.....nothing more than that...

i wouldn't call her mom - she didn't raise me...though i do call my other friends parents' mom & dad without question... i think it has to do with my resentment for how she treats her son...

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

it hasn't come up ... i call her by her first name

when dh & i first started dating, i called her mrs. ___ ... b/c that was what all of dh's parents called his parents (except for 1 friend ) ... but i avoided it when i could b/c it was weird to me to do that ... growing up all my friend's parents were called by their first names. dh's group was more formal in that way, i guess.

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

no but i feel like some day i will
that doesn't seem too uncomfortable but the dad thing does. I'm so close to my step father but i don't call him dad because my biological dad has always been in my life also & still is.
I feel like it would be strange to call my father in law dad but not my step father who i grew up with.
guess i'll worry about that later

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

You mean the woman who left my wedding 2 hours early? No way - she wants me to but I won't. I have a mom and she is not it. We don't really get along well though - if we did I might feel differently.

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

I call my MIL mom and my FIL dad. It started after DH and I got engaged. When they would call and I would pick up they would say hi it's mom or hi it's dad. They also started signing all of their cards love mom and dad.
It was weird at first but now I don't mind.

Re: Do you call your MIL Mom?

Before we were engaged, I called both sets of his parents (FIL and SMIL; MIL and SFIL) Mr. & Mrs. When we got engaged I transitioned to first names. I don't think I could ever call MIL 'mom,' simply b/c she's nuts. I love SMIL, and probably could but b/c DH calls her by her first name anyway, I won't.

My own mother used to call my dad's mother 'Mum' just as he did, but her own parents had passed decades before, and my grandmother was such a sweet woman it was hard not to want to call her something more endearing than her given name. God I miss that woman.

anyway, sorry for the long drawn out answer!
