do you cook?

do you cook?
or does DH cook?
If you, where did you learn to cook?
And do you cook every night? By the time we get home and make dinner -- its like 8pm

Aany suggestions for shortcuts for during the week?

I cook - but not much;
DH does NOT!
My mom taught me most of what I know but there is just no time to learn anything new since we both work work work.

We try to do Sat nite dinners together every week but lately things have been coming up.

I have no suggestions, as that is why I posted this question!

Re: do you cook?

Yes, I cook. I learned from my mother, and watching and helping her while growing up. I also started practicing once I got engaged, and started making a nice meal once a week or so and tried it out on my family!

My DH doesn't cook, but is willing to learn.

I don't plan on cooking every night, though. My DH's schedule makes it impossible to begin with and I simply don't want it to be EXPECTED that I cook. I refuse to cook if I don't feel like it. I'm a wife, not hired help.

My mother cooks every night for my father, whether she's hungry or not, whether she feels like cooking or not. I'm always saying, 'Let Dad feed himself once in a while!' She won't do it. I think it's a generation thing.

Re: do you cook?

I cook...and learned pretty much from mom and through trial and error...

DH tries sometimes...but it is really awful!!! at least it keeps me on my diet ;)

some shortcuts are to marinate meat in tupperware (you can do this the night before or in the morning if its frozen) and then just throw it on the grill (GF grill - which ever)

boiled veggies are very easy...then I throw them in a pan of a little olive oil with garlic...and toss..canned veggies are even easier...

my mom used to make huge meals on the weekends...and then the rest would stretch into leftovers throughout the week (of course DH frowns over leftovers..baby )

if we want something really quick and easy...we'll have breakfast for dinner...eggs with bacon (again on GF grill) and french fries from the oven...

Re: do you cook?

I cook. My mom and grandma were both great cooks so I guess I was surrounded by cookers who cook for armies and I inherited that. My mom never really taught me though - so I think I just picked up by being around it and living on my own for so long. I do enjoy cooking for people when I have the time. I also like to eat! I don't mind experimenting but I don't often have the time.

I pretty much cook dinner M-Th and most Sundays. I try to make something bigger on Sundays (not as much in the summer - rather BBQ). We also eat late. We usually eat around 9ish. So during the week for the most part I cook quicker meals. Actually it is 8 now so I better get started! I do a lot of grilled chicken(different marinades and sauce), steaks, pork chops (different ways), meatloaf, london broil, quesadillas, grilled fish, etc. on weekdays with steamed veggies. DH prefers to cut out most carbs on week nights since we eat so late -so usually just meat and veggies M-Th. We try to keep weeknight meals relatively quick and healthy.

Re: do you cook?

He cooks more than I do and I've never really cooked anything before I got married. I'm just following recipies as I go, and we are both pleasantly surprised that I am not that bad at all! DH is a very good cook. Since he works from home, he makes dinner during the week more often. We try and keep things light and healthy since some nights I get home late and I need to watch the fat intake.

Damn cholesterol!

Re: do you cook?

I cook, basically every night. I wouldnt let DH near the stove much less let him prepare food lol. He can bbq though.

We both work and sometimes DH doesnt get home until after 8, so we end up eating late anyway.

Re: do you cook?

We are so bad about cooking/eating at home. I cannot plan a meal for my life. I was always one of those stop in the store on my way home from work and see what strikes me people. Now there's no store on the way home. I buy and freeze meats but they never defrost in time and then we end up getting something else then something pops up and then the meat goes bad and throw it away. It's something we really NEED to work on!

Re: do you cook?

My DH has a rotating schedule week to week plus he has so many hobbies that take him out of the house just when I would start cooking. By the time I get home from work.. it is just easier to pop something easy in the microwave or eat out. I really wish we ate together every night and I could cook for him. I don't think it is my fault that I don't cook as oftern as I would like...it is his job!

Re: do you cook?

We both can cook, I do most of the cooking when its done in our home. I usually cook a big meal on Sundays.

One short cut I have found is to cook 2 meats on Sunday and then you will only have to cook something to go with it during the week.

Oh another shortcut, once you buy your meat, clean it and seaon it and freeze it, once you need it to cook, it will be all seasoned and ready to go.

You can also do this with salmon, put them in the freezer in portions for cooking and you will only thaw what you will be using.

Re: do you cook?

I cook, DH does not. I basically learned from my mom and my MIL. So far, I can do simple receipes like chicken, steak and pork chops.

On the weekends I dont cook. We eat out or go to our parents house for dinner.

Re: do you cook?

DH is the chef in our marriage. He actually loves cooking and eating. I do the cleaning so it's an equally shared chore in our household. I can cook but not as good as my hubby is.

Re: do you cook?

I know how to cook basic foods and my husband is a wonderful cook. He teaches me his tricks. I cook on the weekends and sometimes during the week but it's hard b/c I work long hours. If my husband gets home early, he sometimes cooks too.

Re: do you cook?

Yes I cook. I learned from my Mom, Dad and Grandmas. I enjoy it, my husband actually sets the table and gets everything ready so when I get home (around 6) I can start. He is my Sous chef.

I try to plan my meals, but my husband is a picky eater and I am trying to broaden his eating style. For instance I cooked a 2nd meal tonight, Pork chops with swiss chard in a red sauce for Thursday night. Tomorrow we are having company. I am making chicken (in a lemon/lime vinegarette) which is defrosting in the fridge as we speak.
