I got a $165.00 ticket for parking in a crosswalk. I parked in angle parking.

Why the hell are the lines there if you can't park there?????

I really makes me mad!!!!

hmm.. I'm not sure. Maybe if there is a cop on the board, they can help you better.
I can kind of understand why you can't park there. I guess a wheelchair would not be able to have access to the ramp but there should have been a sign or something saying that you can't park.

HUmmmmm.....that's a tough one. It's obvious that it was a legal spot at one time but it looks to me like that cross walk is newly cut out of the sidewalk. Is that a new building?

I would fight it. Maybe the contractor just cut it out. I may be wrong but it's worth a fight.

I don't know much about this, but I think I would try and fight it. Before I saw the dip in the sidewalk, it totally looked like a parking spot.

Jenn....Why don't you write to Sam Schwartz aka Gridlock Sam? He has a column in the Daily News. Send him the pictures and explain the situation and he'll definitely let you know if you should fight the ticket or not....Here's the info:

that stinks, i mean it looks legal to me!! i would totally fight it and bring your pics with you. DH worked in the city and the very few parking or traffic tickets he ever wrote, if someone was fighting it, most times they wouldn't allow him to go cause he had a shift already scheduled, and after 3 times the person would be off the hook for the ticket. but the person would have to appear 3 times. I don't know how often that happens though, but he never went.

Good luck, that really really stinks! and they need to put lines in that spot if you can't park their. Espically due to the fact that you have to park head out, how the hell are you supposed to see that little tiny ramp.

I would try to fight it if I were you. The space should have been more clearly marked to show it wasn't a parking space. I bet you're not the first person to get a ticket for parking there. Good luck!

good luck girl. did u hear my last ticket story??? I got a ticket for parking in a 'bus stop'....BUT IT WAS NO LONGER ACTIVE!!! there were other cars parked all around me, and parking signs everywhere. COMPLETELY the negligence of the cop who wrote it. I took photos, the whole nine. They sent me a letter saying they still wanted me to pay $100...i still refused because hello?! i wasn't paying $100 for somewhere i was ALOUD to park.... they then sent me a letter saying that since i wasn't settleing, i had to pay the original price plus a late fee to bring the balance to zero - and THEN if i wanted i could request an appeal for a hearing to POSSIBLY get refunded my money. if i still refused, they would either re-posess my car, or freeze my bank account. lovely right? i gave up & paid the ticket. It still freakin' urks me to this day. it's the whole principle of the thing! they do the stupidest crap!!!

DH said he would fight it, its not a marked cross walk, theres no painting, no signs saying not to block it, FIL is a retired cop but its obviously too late to ask him.

Also, if you go to court to fight it and the cop doesnt show (or changes the date) 3x the ticket gets thrown out->if I am remembering correctly. I would fight it, whats the worst that happens, you wind up having to pay it. But the sign literally right behind your car SAYS back in parking at an angle...

DH said to take a picture from the back of the car (out the window) so that it proves you cant see the dip in the curb, hw said to also take pictures all around the spot so that you can prove there was nothing telling you not to park there.

I dont know where you are, but I know Taryn is in Queens-in Nassau/Suffolk you dont have to pay the ticket before you go to court, if you have a court date you dont have to mail the ticket in at all, if you dotn have a court date you just check off Not Guilty and send in the ticket they will send you a court date.

I dont know if this helps, I dont konw where you parked-if in Queens go by what Taryn said. If not the above.

Sorry that I didn't respond sooner. I am rarely on this board anymore. Anyway, I am a Sergeant with the NYPD. Whenever a friend or family member asks me about a parking ticket, I always tell them to fight it. ALWAYS. There are a few boxes on the ticket that may not have been filled out or filled out improperly, that will have the ticket thrown out automatically.

Someone mentioned about the officer not showing up 3 times and the ticket being thrown out... fyi- officers do not appear for parking tickets. Also, it is very possible that an officer did not write this ticket- more likely a parking enforcement agent- a civilian who has to write hundreds of parking summons per week and will basically write anything!!

If you go to the parking violations bureau online, you will see the option to fight the ticket online. I would advise against this, and tell you to go in person. Definitely bring your pictures. It seems clear that there is no markings for the crosswalk, and to be honest, to me it appears that the person who wrote this, wrote the wrong summons. A crosswalk is when you see two white lines indicating a walkway from one sidewalk to another, some crosswalks also have perpendicular lines in the crosswalk to make it stand out more. Not the case here. The summons that should have been written was: 'Parking in front of a pedestrian ramp,' for which the fine is $165.

Do not let this go or else you will have to pay late fees. It is of utmost importance that you fight this asap. Here is a site to give you more info: Parking Violations

FM me if you need more help. Good luck!

Re: Do you think I will win this ticket if I fight it??? I am so mad!!!

I once got a ticket for the same thing but it was parallel parking instead of angle parking. I had checked the signs, everything was good, I left the car and in the morning I was like WHY in the world did I get a ticket? Only then did I notice that there was a dip in the sidewalk. Well, I took pictures of the signs, of my car parked there, of the fact that there was NO CROSSWALK lines marked there for anyone to cross the street, and wrote a letter explaining everything. I sent it in with the ticket and a few weeks later I got a letter that the ticket was dismissed.

So definitely fight it. If that's not a spot to park, they should mark it with yellow lines or something. GL!

PS: I got the ticket in NYC.
