I think my feminist days are over. I absolutely love my profession and I have a dream job....but I can totally see myself wanting to just be a stay at home wife/mom too. My husband and I agreed I can do this when we start a family...(approx. 2-3 years from now).
I know women can have it all...but do we still want it all? Your thoughts?

Re: does anyone just not want to work anymore?
When I first had my children, I lost myself. My whole identity became 'Matt's wife, Nicole's mom, etc.) I needed something just for me! First I went back to school then I went to work. I loved being just 'Maureen' again. I think to have happy children, you need a happy mom! Whether it is a job, school or hobby that makes you YOU!

Re: does anyone just not want to work anymore?
I think the main reason I want to be a stay at home mom is b/c my mom had to work full time since i was 5 years old. She always told me that the she wished she could have stayed home full time becaue the first five years with me was the best years of her life. But on the other hand b/c both my parents worked full time I became very independent and mature quickly.
If things work out like me and my husband have planned I will stay at home with our children but eventually get a part time job just to bring in some extra cash.

I'm with Kel - I think I would be happy working only one job - this two job business stinks!

I would love to have the best of both worlds, a job I love, with the flexibility to be able to be with my children. However the responsibility of a mortgage and DH being a NYC firefighter makes thism ore of a dream than a reality

My God I can't belive how much so many of your responses have hit home for me I have always known that I wanted to be a wife and mother and thankfully when I met my Dh he wanted the same thing-- so we always said we would wait to have kids for at least 5 years-- i have a good job, got my masters 3 years ago so that i could advance, etc-- well let me tell you last year BABY FEVER hit hard and we decided that 2004 would be the year for us--- Well....We have been TTC for 3 months now and it is driving me crazy cause I just want to quit my job now (things have gotten bad at work) and each month that I don't get pregnant is another month I have to be here!!! Someone send me baby dust!!!!!

Re: does anyone just not want to work anymore?
I used to enjoy my job and be motivated but for the last year or so, I could care less. I get my work done, but that's about it. I have almost become a clock watcher which I never was.
Andrea, my mother said the same thing. She was home with us full time until we were both in school (so 5 & 6 years old) and she said all the sacrifices were worth it so she was able to be with us during those times. Then she worked part time until we were older.
Laura - baby dust coming at you:D

~~~~Baby Dust Laura ~~~~~
I've thought about this question so much and I think that I'm still undecided and won't really be able to make this decision until the time comes. My plan is to work part time, if that's feasible, and (fortunatley) have my Mom babysit the days I work, but once baby #2 comes, then what?
It's so hard to answer this question because right now I want so much. A bigger house in a more expensive town, a nice savings, vacations yearly, dinner out, etc ... and to do all those things and live in LI, we need two incomes and I'm not ready to leave NY just yet. Although I do think my priorities will change once I have a little munckin and it may be hard to part with him/her.
However, although I tend to dread my job right now, I would miss working and making money. I'm in school to change my career and try to do something that I think I will love, so my opinion may change yet again. I'm thinking about getting into Education and then my schedule may work better with my kids too. Also, I don't know what our financial situation will be in 3 years ... although I'm hoping for the Mega jackpot too! So who knows what's in store for me. But I admire both the SAHMs and the working ones too. I think Wendy is right ... the grass is always greener on the other side.
TG its not just me. Part of my dissatisfaction might be that I had to give up my office and I sit in a very noisy operations department now
