Dog Breeds

Original post by shoegal68

even though it is too soon to get another dog right after having to put our little yorkie down last month. we are thinking maybe by the summer. we do miss Max terribly and we will never forget him. but we do miss the companionship.

so my question is since i never really had a dog before except for Max, does anybody have any suggestions? since we still live in an apartment, i would like a small dog. i was thinking of a maltese or another yorkie. but DH wants a Jack Russell. i did some research & heard they are very hyper

not too sure if thats too smart, since we live in an apartment

any suggestions??

It will be years before we get a dog, but i'm so looking forward to having a dog again. I love the Jack Russell Terrier mix. Like the dog Baxter in Anchorman! So cute!

I think a yorkie is good. We have a westie but he's too much for an apartment. He's nuts in our house! Our little monster before his grooming lol

We have a Jack Russel
Yes she can be VERY hyper but if you exercise them properly or keep them busy, it is not a problem. She also has her 'lazy' time which is from about 8 am - noon or later. She is sooooo loving and smart! They are relatively easy to train. We have an apartment and sometimes I feel bad - I think she would be much happier in a house where she could run - she loves going to my mom's house. She is also VERY friendly and loves other dogs although sometimes her personality is a little too overwhelming - lol. My husband refused to get a girly dog and I am so glad we got her!!! If you want any more details feel free to FM me

I have a westie too, she is great. She gets hyper at times but for the most part she is a great dog. She loves laying on the couch with us. I think they would be great for an apartment.

I'm a fan of the Havanese as well and i absolutely LOVE my Shi-tzu! Both have great temperments... neither shed they are great dogs! Once we get a bigger place i definetly plan on getting a big huge mutt of some sort lol, but for now we will stick to our smaller buddies.

ps; Jack Russels are really cool but they are very VERY hyper..don't think i've ever met a calm one! lol..and they shed like crazy.

I have a Shih Tzu and she is the best dog ever! I didn't like Shih Tzu's the day I walked into that store, but the guy told me about them and I fell in love with her little face when I picked her up! She was really easy to traing, is really loving and is GREAT with any and all people. She was wee-wee pad trained in less than a day and a half!

Be careful with Jack Russell's...they are aggressive, overly hyper and can be vicious! They are definitely not good for people who have/want kids.

Yorkies have major health issues and seem to be getting worse over time....I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole! Umm, the other doggies mentioned have good reps too! Good luck with your choice!

We have a yorkie and she's my baby.
My Cousins have a maltese and she's very aggressive and they are not happy with her. They've had her 5 years and they have a 10 month old and the dog has been growling at the baby..
I like the Havaneese and puggles!

This is my baby

Re: Dog Breeds

there are SO MANY great dog breeds out there....

i LOVE beagles but heard they can be nutty and also hyper and crazy.....same for jack russels - but they are so cute too!

we have a shar pei, but i wouldnt recommend getting one - they are probably bigger than what you are looking for anyway - mine is abnormally small (35lbs) and lots of people think she is still a puppy when they see her - shar pei's are usually bigger - but they are really cute and VERY loyal and protective....they are known to have health issues but not every shar pei does.....our shar pei had eye issues and surgery and she has some skin issues and allergies but i love her still so a shar pei could be very high maintenance and expensive when it comes to vet bills.....

i like the chihuahua for some reason! but i probably would never get one hahaha....

daschaunds are cute - but i heard they are more prone to back injuries and can get hurt jumping on and off the couches and bed.....but they are SO CUTE!

we had an american eskimo growing up - the most awesome dog - but they shed....

my sister has a corgi (the dog kendra has on girls next door) and he is awesome - kind of resembles the body of a dauschuand.....he loves to play and has tons of personality....

i like boston terriers and french bull dogs! i want a french bull dog but DH thinks they are ugly

there are so many small - medium sized breeds out there so lucky for you there is a lot to choose from!

I had a jack russell mutt that went cujo on me, he was only a pup and he viciously attacked me. I have a little yorkie and he is amazing, healthy as a horse. He just had overcrowing teeth removed because his baby teeth never came out but other than that he is amazing!

I have had a lot of dogs, we have 4 right now. I would suggest not getting a terrier. They are generally hyper dogs. We have a westie, she is a great dog but for the first 5 years she was very hyper.
What about a cocker spaniel not a tiny dog but a very easy going dog. All the little toy dogs are generally good for small spaces.

I have a doxie(a hot dog) she is the best dog in the world. we live in apt and she is great, very lazy lays on the couch all day

me too... i have a mini daschsund too, he is only about 9 lb, and he loves to lay around, but loves to go on walks when you are able to take him. they are good for a small apt, or home. they have the best little personalities too.

omg that is the best pic ever. I have a mini daschsund as well (but black) and he is the best dog ever. Actually this is how I found Dh and Gunner sleeping this morning after I got out of the shower lol

the only thing is mine is like 20lbs he NEEDS to loose weight. He is 3 yrs old and the vet said he needs to be about 15 lbs so he needs to loose 5 lbs! Hopefully now that I am outta my moms place he will decrease in size. She was the cause I swear.
