Dog Breeds

Original post by shoegal68

even though it is too soon to get another dog right after having to put our little yorkie down last month. we are thinking maybe by the summer. we do miss Max terribly and we will never forget him. but we do miss the companionship.

so my question is since i never really had a dog before except for Max, does anybody have any suggestions? since we still live in an apartment, i would like a small dog. i was thinking of a maltese or another yorkie. but DH wants a Jack Russell. i did some research & heard they are very hyper

not too sure if thats too smart, since we live in an apartment

any suggestions??

I think a yorkie is good. We have a westie but he's too much for an apartment. He's nuts in our house! Our little monster before his grooming lol

OMG, he's so cute...I love his eyes!

Here's my new man. We just got him last night. Mom was a Boxer/Bulldog....Daddy is a mystery! So far, he's wonderful. 9 weeks and he's going to the door to go out, slept all night, etc.!

I have a westie too, she is great. She gets hyper at times but for the most part she is a great dog. She loves laying on the couch with us. I think they would be great for an apartment.

Aw, the costume is hysterical...what a good dog!

MY brother has a Jack russel named Milo!! And hes the most friendliest cuddliest dog. He can be hyper if you make him be. Otherwise he is totally relaxed and just wants to cuddle with you on the couch upside down. It really depends how you train and raise them. Yes they can be hyper but not all of them are. Aww poor Milo.. I love him soo much.

I have a Bulldog in my Apartment. But he is work. I would never reccomend him to anyone who dosent like drool.. LOL.. I love him so much, he is so Handsome!! (well to me he is) They are very loyal and love being with you, and can be very stubborn and lazy!! but he is so smart!

Definitely a cockapoo. They are a mix between a poodle and a cocker spaniel. I have two now (DH got me a puppy for Christmas!) Here is a picture of Oreo when he was a puppy. They are such smart dogs, dont shed, and are so friendly

Yorkies have major health issues and seem to be getting worse over time....I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole! Umm, the other doggies mentioned have good reps too! Good luck with your choice!

What are you talking about the OP had a yorkie that lived til 16

Oh wow, really? My cousin had two Yorkies, one after the other, that lived around that long too.

there are SO MANY great dog breeds out there....

i LOVE beagles but heard they can be nutty and also hyper and crazy.....same for jack russels - but they are so cute too!

we have a shar pei, but i wouldnt recommend getting one - they are probably bigger than what you are looking for anyway - mine is abnormally small (35lbs) and lots of people think she is still a puppy when they see her - shar pei's are usually bigger - but they are really cute and VERY loyal and protective....they are known to have health issues but not every shar pei does.....our shar pei had eye issues and surgery and she has some skin issues and allergies but i love her still so a shar pei could be very high maintenance and expensive when it comes to vet bills.....

i like the chihuahua for some reason! but i probably would never get one hahaha....

daschaunds are cute - but i heard they are more prone to back injuries and can get hurt jumping on and off the couches and bed.....but they are SO CUTE!

we had an american eskimo growing up - the most awesome dog - but they shed....

my sister has a corgi (the dog kendra has on girls next door) and he is awesome - kind of resembles the body of a dauschuand.....he loves to play and has tons of personality....

i like boston terriers and french bull dogs! i want a french bull dog but DH thinks they are ugly

there are so many small - medium sized breeds out there so lucky for you there is a lot to choose from!

My cousin's in-laws had two Sharpeis that lived pretty long. One was so sweet and the other was kind of nasty. I used to crack up because he would come running growling, and he sounded like the tasmanian devil!

I have had a lot of dogs, we have 4 right now. I would suggest not getting a terrier. They are generally hyper dogs. We have a westie, she is a great dog but for the first 5 years she was very hyper.
What about a cocker spaniel not a tiny dog but a very easy going dog. All the little toy dogs are generally good for small spaces.

omg totally forget about the cockerspaniel - another one of my favorite dogs!

Yes, I had a cockerspaniel mix growing up and a pedigree cockerspaniel after him...I loved them so much. The pedigree could be a brat, but I still loved him. Great dogs!

Re: Dog Breeds

I have 2 dogs...one is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (the black & white)..GREAT breed..small...sweet...good temperment...calm..

the other is a rescue dog...some kind of terrier mix...she is great too but a bit of a nut...Terriers have alot of energy and she loves to bark at everything outside the window. The spaniel is more laid back.

if anyone is looking for a smaller rescue dog check out

We have a Boston Terrier... great with kids, easy to train, not much grooming involved, affectionate and playful.

Here's a link to the Dogs 101 website (it's a show on Animal Planet) that might help you figure out a good dog for you and your needs or just to get some quick info on a breed your interested in.
