Ex-smokers....need your help please

Who has quit smoking? What method or tricks did you use?

I got some bad medical info on my dad who's a smoker and I'm going to quit. I want to come up with a game plan on how to do it and would welcome any advice.

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

I quit cold turkey.

My parents, longtime smokers, quit about ten years ago successfully by using the patch.

They haven't had one since!

My dad used to smoke 3 packs a day. He quit cold turkey after he almost died after a triple bypass.

Good luck on your quitting!!!!!!!

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

I tried to quit smoking several times for several years and it never stuck. I think you really need to WANT to do it. I didn't apply any methods or anything like that, one day I just felt particularly wheezy when I woke up and thought 'Enough!' I packed them up that day and haven't looked back. The only thing I really thought about was something one person said to me after he quit- 'Saying no to the first cigarette is the hardest. If you can resist that temptation the first time, it gets easier and easier.' It was extra hard because that weekend we took a trip to the Jersey Shore and were seated in the smoking section at restaurants where all my friends promptly lit up. My friend even gave me a cigaratte but I gave it back. I didn't want to fail before I even started. lol! Besides, what my friend said stuck with me.

Good luck!

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

I did it cold turkey. I just reminded myself constantly that this little cigarette had absolutely no control over me. I reminded myself that I was the one putting it in my mouth, and if I didn't want it there, I just had to stop putting it there.

ETA: I'm really sorry about your Dad.

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

I think the only thing that works is that you have to WANT to do it. Use your father as your incentive.

But than again, who am I to talk....

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

i quit cold turkey (for the most part)

Quitting takes practice. I quit three official times before it stuck. I used patches, gum and knitting! The last time I quit, I had a really bad upper respitory infection and didnt smoke for like 4 days cuz i didnt want to. I met DH a week later and he said he'd never date a smoker. So definitely moral support also helped. I quit in April- didnt go back out to the bars regularly until February. It was too much of a tempation to smoke.

so- patches, moral support, eliminating temptation and practice is what helped me!

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

I just quit (last sunday) and I'm doing it cold turkey. It SUX, but it gets easier every day. What I've been doing is every time I get a craving, I put either gum or a mint in my mouth. That seems to help.
HTH and I'm so sorry about your dad.

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

Im sorry about your dad ..

I smoked for many years. One day I just said - Im done. Its disgusting and it smells and its just not worth it. I never touched one again. I chewed a ton of gum!! I didnt use any of the gimmicky gum or any of the other things they sell. I just really wanted to quit so I did.

Its just a cigarette. You cant let it control you. The diseases smoking causes was motivation enough for me. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

I've attempted to quit sooo many times!! Its bad when you know its bad for you but you enjoy it at the same point.

Quitting cold turkey while being healthy NEVER worked for me. It just made me short tempered and stressed.

Chantix DID work. It was like a switch went off and all the cravings disapeared. The appeal of smoking just stopped. I had no urge for it at all. The only thing is you MUST take it with a full meal. Otherwise it will upset your stomach and you will feel neauseas. I had some vivid dreams, but nothing horrible. I did notice by month 2 that I was getting a lil overy aggressive and angry (which is a listed side effect). So I stopped taking it. But by then I didnt need it anymore bc I was over cigarettes and smoking lol.

Good luck!

Re: Ex-smokers....need your help please

Thanks for all the advice! I feel I need a plan of attack before I attempt to quit. I'd rather not do the patch or pills - so the little tricks you guys posted is a great start.

Dad's going to be ok - he's passed his pre-surgical tests and now he meets with the surgeon to take the f*ing thing out of his lung. He's going to kick the cancer's a$$!!!!!!

I'll post on here when I need some support cause you ladies are always so nice even though I've never met any of you. Thanks guys!!!
